One great thing about Code Lyoko is how they made sure that each of their seasons felt unique and distinct, and a big part of how they did that is that they let the protagonists' and antagonist's goals change over the course of the show.
Real quick, if you're not familiar - Code Lyoko is an early 2000s French cartoon where 5 teenagers use a supercomputer that can send people into a virtual world called Lyoko to battle an evil AI called XANA. XANA in turn can activate Towers on Lyoko to basically hack reality and make weird stuff happen. One of the five, Aelita, can deactivate the towers, and once she does, the heroes can rewind time by 1 day. So
In S1, the Lyoko Warriors' goal is to get Aelita out of the Supercomputer so they can shut the Supercomputer down. XANA's goal is to make sure this doesn't happen, and also to force the heroes to reverse time to undo XANA's attacks because this makes XANA stronger
In S2, Aelita's out of the Supercomputer but XANA made a link between her and Lyoko so the heroes still can't turn the Supercomputer off. So the heroes' goal here is to find an antivirus to completely free Aelita from XANA. XANA's goal is to capture Aelita and drain her source code - and we learn near the end of the season that Aelita is human and her father made the Supercomputer and put the Keys to Lyoko in her mind, which is what XANA wants from her. With the Keys, XANA can escape Lyoko into the internet. And in the finale, XANA manages to escape, but Aelita's father intervenes and restores her full memories, freeing her from XANA in the process.
In Season 3, the heroes' goal is to find XANA and figure out a way to track XANA down. They also want to find Aelita's father, Franz Hopper, who's hiding somewhere in the virtual world. XANA's goal is to destroy Lyoko, either all at once or sector by sector. In the end, XANA wins this one, corrupting the sixth Lyoko Warrior, William, in the process. However, Franz Hopper escapes into the internet and sends the heroes the code to rebuild Lyoko.
In Season 4, the Lyoko Warriors' goals are: to find and save William, and to destroy copies of Lyoko that XANA's made throughout the internet and the supercomputers XANA took over to do it. XANA's goals are to capture Aelita as a hostage to lure out and kill Franz Hopper and to make more copies of Lyoko than the heroes can destroy.
Now there's other things that keep each season fresh, like the lore drops in season 2, Aelita's development into a full Lyoko Warrior, and escalation in various forms. But this evolution of the heroes' and villain's goals still contributes a lot to that, because the goals write the story
