where: underground cage match when: friday, august 17, evening who: open to all
Instead of running to the bar as soon as the first fight ended, Raleigh instead leaned his forearms against the railing of the upstairs balcony. He was content to people watch, gaze blankly passing over the bloodied and beaten loser in the ring. It wasn’t necessarily how he had expected to spend his Friday night but he’d been extended an invitation nonetheless, a simple location and password being slipped to him by one of the lab’s favored customers.
There were a mix of people surrounding the cage tonight - from blue-collar workers just needing to see some sort of release to blue blooded patrons of the sport, dropping money on bets like it was nothing more than spare change.
Raleigh was currently focused on one of these blue bloods, taking in his dark suit and slicked back hair. He seemed to find the blood on the cage floor distasteful, his mouth turned down with disgust. Beside him, his date didn’t seem to find the blood as vulgar or violent. Instead, she only watched with interest. Raleigh’s lips twitched slightly at the sight of her shrugging off whatever her date was saying. Whatever it was, the sight of the man deflating considerably caused a sharp grin to spread across the drug’s face.
As someone new stepped up beside him, joining him in his current hobby of people watching, Raleigh cast them an interested glance. “Place your bet on the final matches?”
Mickey had spent enough time being a black cat, a broken mirror, spilled salt. She ruined, cursed, and broke – sometimes her own life, at times others. A self-serve bad omen. Even if she showered and combed through her hair and shook out her pockets, bad luck seemed to hang on her, an extra appendage on her shadow. Perhaps because she knew what it was to poison your own chances, or perhaps because she was a bitch and a fool, Mickey stopped for the small twinkle she passed on the ground, pinched the loose change in her fingers, and turned it over.
At the approach of footsteps, she looks up, unaffected and unbothered. The woman takes another drag from her cigarette and narrows her eyes.
“It’s only good luck if it’s face-side up.”
A glance downward. It’s tails.
The smoke obscured her delicate face in a grey cloud but Raleigh watched as her eyes darted down toward the quarter on the ground. Luck was an odd concept to him, but that might have been because luck was not necessarily always in his favor. Were he a superstitious man, he’d say his entire youth had been one long period of bad luck. Like religion, maybe it was easier to look toward luck and fate. Either way, neither God nor coins on the ground had been much use to him.
“I thought the real saying was that it’s only good luck if it’s the opposite of what you get.” He flicked the edge of his own cigarette with his thumb, sending ash trickling to the ground. He glanced back to the flower’s face, searching for her reaction to the bad news. In the back of his mind, he briefly remembered his mother making le corna, twisting her fingers into a sign of the horns whenever she knocked a broom over or broke a mirror.
“Do you get nothing if it’s tails or strictly bad look?” Curiosity had him asking.
you’ve no idea how lonely i sometimes am pulp kitchen, post-gala open to all !!
Julian was, for once in their life, perfectly content to stay right where they were: smack in the middle of a beautiful sunbeam, leather-clad feet propped up on the windowsill they sat beside. Settled in with a book in hand, they were prepared to spend the afternoon reading in peace. Or rather, leaving everyone else in peace. Within minutes of starting the book, however, that constant inclination toward striking up a conversation with basically anyone crawling into their very bones.
They fought it at first, adjusting in their seat and refocusing on a line of text they had already read three times without absorbing one bit. If someone wants a conversation with you, they’ll approach you, they chided themself. Besides, alone time was supposed to be good for you, right?
Wrong, wrong, definitely wrong. Five minutes later they were out of their seat, heading toward the first person they recognized armed with a smile. At least nobody could say they didn’t try.
“Pardon the interruption, but you look so engrossed it’s hard not to take interest,” they said, almost theatrical in tone. “What are you reading that has you so fascinated?”
Truth be told, what had Raleigh so engrossed wasn’t the novel on his lap but rather his view of the street and connected alleyway outside. He’d picked that plush chair across the window for its view alone - the sight of one of their younger dealers hawking product rather carelessly. He’d been listening to the whispers in their organization, the continued grumbling that Anthony better be more careful about his technique.
Like any good manager, Raleigh went to check it out. Low level dealers weren’t necessarily damaging to the organization but like every good machine, the lab suffered if a cog wasn’t working. And this cog was proving to be more problematic due to the fact he had a trainee with him today.
He had underestimated the friendliness of others, however. When Julian approached with a quick grin on their face, asking about the book in Raleigh’s lap, Raleigh finally looked down to see the cover, the title not quite having registered in his mind. He almost sighed.
“Well, looks like I’m reading Twilight for the day.” He replied, expression perfectly serious. Besides the basic knowledge about the series, Raleigh hadn’t actually read it himself.

Molly was relentless as she pulled on her leash, causing Raleigh to tighten his grip on the fabric. “Molly, heel.” Despite the command there was no real sharpness behind the words. For all his experience barking commands for H, Raleigh didn’t have the ability to fully snap at the dog. No, that was usually where Isaiah came in with Raleigh sneaking in later to soak up all of Molly’s hurt affection.
You spoil her.
Despite the many accusations from Isaiah, Raleigh also knew that Isaiah also truly didn’t have the ability to fully snap at him. Even at his worst in his youth, it had taken quite a bit for Isaiah to fully thunder fiercely at him. And Raleigh had done some truly heinous things in the beginning. Ten years later and he was still trying to live down the time he had bitten Isaiah. It’d taken him time but he’d caged that feral part of him away inside, locked in the back with all the poison of Lithium. “Any plans?” He asked, slipping his free hand into his pocket. In the distance, he could see the sleek form of Isaiah’s black audi. Raleigh couldn’t help the flash of wickedness that passed over his face. “Or is it straight to bed like the old man you are?”
Molly gave a particularly ferocious yank on the leash, the movement taking Raleigh by surprise. The momentum forced him away from the other man, toward a trash can a couple feet away where the dog sniffed furiously at an empty McDonald’s box on the ground.
It was only in the reflection of the nearby shop window did Raleigh see the shadowy figure step out of the upcoming alley, right hand shifting up in the direction of Isaiah.
where: the lab, tattoo parlor when:august 13, round ten who: @madhatmercury
With a flick of his thumb, Raleigh watched as the neon open sign in the parlor’s window shut off, darkening the street considerably. He didn’t turn the lock yet, however, expecting more company despite the late hour. Mercury had responded to his text with her usual flair, more than lured in with the promise of weed. Truth be told, he was looking forward to her arrival for more than just business, interested to know what had happened at the Gala from her end of the event. Raleigh had a ravenous curiosity and Merc satisfied him constantly with tales of drama and woe within Dertosa. If some of that information got back to H, Raleigh was only doing his duty and passing on the need to know.
Tucking his lighter into his pack of cigarettes, Raleigh tossed the box onto the counter. Nodding at one of the remaining artists cleaning his station, he busied himself with shutting down the office for the night. Counting the drawers didn’t take long, Raleigh was tucking the cash into the safe when he heard the front door announce the arrival of another person with a soft ding. Shutting the reinforced door and clearing the code, he was strolling into the front once more.
At the sight of the hacker, his mouth curved up into a slight grin. “I think that might be record time, Merc. Did you run here?”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Matt.” Raleigh spoke next to the remaining artist. Seeming relieved with the dismissal as all double shift pulling employees are, it didn’t take long for Matt to roll out the door, tossing a goodbye and a smile for Mercury over his shoulder. “Think you have an admirer too.”
where: the vices club when: the night after the gala, round midnight who: @ofxfrenchie
“Looks like we’re twins tonight, French.” Raleigh commented as soon as the woman entered hearing range, his gaze dropping to her bruised knuckles and then his own. Despite the meticulous cleaning of his own split knuckles, the cuts stood out even in the dim flashing lights. But, he’d rather split knuckles than a broken nose which might have been what happened if he hadn’t ducked out of the way of a particularly nasty right hook. Thanks again for that lesson, Bomber. He’d been sent to teach a rival dealer a lesson and Raleigh liked to think that he got his point across. That point? H was one that you did not fuck with. But business was done for the night, leaving open a wide availability. He’d chosen to spend that availability, drinking and following a tale of drama all the way to the club. He was truly sorry he had chosen tow work that night instead of attend the gala.
And now, he’d found the subject of said tale. As usual, Frenchie commanded the scene on the floor - which might have been a bad business decision considering all the attention she drew from the dancers. Not that she’d entertain it, however. She took her job seriously, one of the things Raleigh enjoyed about her. Loyalty was an admirable trait. Not to mention, if this rumor was true, there’d be even more to admire about her.
“Good night?”

where: isaiah’s home when: friday august 17th, late afternoon, around 4pm-ish who: @lithiumlegacy
they’re outside, a pot of coffee on the table in front of each of them, molly lounging in the sun in the freshly mowed grass, a fresh marrow-bone in front of her ( one of these days isaiah needed to have a talk with raleigh about not spoiling the pup so much ). they’d sat over inventory for most of the day, at first at the lab and later in the warehouse, the numbers were okay after a recent hick-up things did run smoothly again, still, they had to be careful, had to plan ahead, had to remain ahead at least three steps with the feds recent interest in their business. it would be only a matter of time until they would want to check the warehouse too—- n o t that they would find anything.
‘ question is ’ he states, eyebrows furrowed ‘ we’re good for about another two weeks to a month without ordering anything and tempering with numbers. ’ it wasn’t good to run out of stock though and to order in mass wasn’t something isaiah enjoyed either. ‘ but we can expect a visit soon, and if not that then at least a raised interest. ’ occasionally he did wonder if someone had tipped them off—- god forbid if someone had. a former dealer perhaps? a rivalling one? his fingers flex, clench subconsciously into a fist. a gruesome death would be the least of the rat’s concerns. he snaps out of it, returns to the topic at hand regarding raleigh somewhat pensively ‘ do we order or not? ’ it wasn’t hard to mess with numbers, to brush over what was actually delivered and what wasn’t. neither but them would know where to find the additional orders either, still.
In moments like these, it was very easy for Raleigh to forget the past. With the late afternoon sun flickering onto his face, the sight of Molly blinking lazily at him from across the yard and the comforting presence of Isaiah beside him, it was the most relaxed he’d been in a few months. Even if they were currently discussing the recent federal interest in their rather illegal business. As Isaiah spoke, his gaze flicked to his boss, taking in the frown on the drug lord’s face. He was still for a moment before focusing back on Molly, raising his arms behind his head and locking his fingers together around the nape of his neck.
“Safest option might be to order.” Thoughtful expression on his face, Raleigh’s mind travelled to from their suppliers to their dealers to their customers. Briefly, his mind stopped at the other drugs. Dertosa was a shark tank, everyone always poised for even the tiniest drop of blood. Which of their fellow “business” owners would profit from their loss? “Better to have more than to run out, and we wouldn’t want to lose face. We’d have to be one step ahead of the feds, though. We know anyone on the inside?” Fingers slacking, his hands drifted back to the arms of the chair. “But, then again, pride could be damned and we play it safe and retreat more into the shadows. Wait until this all dies down.” He mused, running a thumb absentmindedly along a hooked scar on his palm.
who: @rebelliumhq when: august 14, around 7 pm where: outside mosaic church
"Didn’t think you were the religious type, Cypress.” Raleigh commented, body slouched against the outside church walls. A few feet of the door, he had his head leaned back against the brick, arms crossed over his chest. Dark eyes lazily following the flower as he emerged from the church, he eventually eased himself off the wall and straightened up before taking a few steps toward the other man.
Truth be told, he wasn’t lying. When he had asked around for the flower, an eyebrow had raised when someone had mentioned seeing him going into Mosaic recently. Of course, who was he to judge what someone one believed in? Despite his own rather complicated relationship with God, he’d spent enough time around Isaiah to know what it meant to others. Still, that didn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t allowed to be surprised in some cases but in the end, it didn’t matter. Raleigh was seeking out Cypress for a reason.
When would people ever learn that stealing from H would only lead them down a rather slippery road? Especially when Raleigh was the one icing the ground. Still, one of their dealers had decided to press his luck, stealing more and more product and selling it under the table under the impression that H wouldn’t retaliate or even notice. He always noticed - it’s what made him so good. Of course, now that the problem had presented itself, it was up to him to solve it.
“Come to offer you dinner and a job.”
✘ o p e n location: some lil chinese food joint in the jade district time: whenever. probably late night. like 1am but can be earlier.
He’s in his zone. The smell of grease in the air, a steady film of THC coating the nooks and crannies of his brain, the sound of woks sizzling and a huge fish tank bubbling (salt water, of course, those were quality)—that was al the man needed in life. The only thing that could disturb him is someone tapping against the glass, bothering not only him, but the fish.
In the moment they were one in the same, he and those slippery phylum chordata. He imagined himself in the tank, feeling the soundwaves of the large finger tapping against the glass. He was a fish, and he was bothered.
“Man, don’t you know you ain’t supposed to do that?” he muttered. “You’re, like, scrambling their brains n’ shit.”
“Yeah, be over after.” Raleigh muttered into the phone, ending the call to Isaiah as he strode toward the bright neon glow of the little Chinese restaurant on the corner. With his phone always on, he kept odd hours and with his odd hours came a strange sleeping and eating cycle. Luckily for him, it seemed that most of Jade District were of the same sort, a number of people still wandering around despite the late hour. Even luckier for him, he didn’t have to spend the night alone - not that it bothered him - but it seemed work was keeping Isaiah up late as well which was how he found himself ordering food for the two of them.
It wasn’t until he was in line at the register with his stomach rumbling unhappily behind one other person that he noticed the other Drug in the restaurant. More like he heard him before he saw him. Lips twitching slightly in amusement, Raleigh looked to the man who had been rapping his finger against the glass of the fish tank. He seemed to be a bit stunned at the comment, blinking owlishly like he couldn’t think of anything to say back. He briefly looked to Raleigh as if asking him.
At this, Raleigh merely shrugged, offering the response. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you...or some shit like that, right?”

THE SINNER. TW: ABANDONMENT, DEPRESSION, FIRE, MURDER
Raleigh was named for a far off place that his mother was never going to visit. His name - like his entire existence - was a pipe dream Nina Turner had conjured up in a desperate attempt to convince her wealthy boyfriend to keep her around. After all, only a heartless bastard could walk out on the love of their life and their newborn baby. Raleigh’s father proved to be just that, leaving a check for $500 and absolutely no way to get into contact with him. Not that Raleigh ever shed many tears for his estranged father. His mother, on the other hand, shed so many tears that it was a wonder she didn’t flood the entire apartment. Some of his earliest memories are the sound of his mother’s voice shrilly insisting that ‘he would come back’ over the phone to whoever would listen. Still, Raleigh and his mother managed to live successfully on their own for eight years until Lithium clawed his way into the picture.
Raleigh remembers to warning bells going off in his head the first moment he met Lithium, the morning after his mother had gone out with friends. He was accustomed to seeing strangers in the apartment and didn’t bother questioning, passing him off as just another in a long line of painkillers for his mother’s broken heart. Unfortunately, Lithium didn’t just disappear as expected, appearing once again two days later, and then twice a week and then everyday. He came with seductive words and promises of adoration that may have sounded hollow to Raleigh but were a love song to his mother. They married not four months after meeting in a smudgy ceremony held in a local bar. It happened so quick that Raleigh couldn’t even process his mother actually dating again let alone deal with having a new father. They moved into Nina’s deceased mother’s house, a whole new castle of a lacking fairytale. Of course, Lithium didn’t exactly have the intention to be a father to young Raleigh. Truth be told, he barely even acknowledge his new stepson - something that irked Raleigh at the time. If only he could have told himself that invisibility is better than Lithium’s attention.
If anyone ever asked Raleigh about hell, he wouldn’t tell them that hell was the smoldering look in their step-father’s eyes as Lithium held his tiny, ten year old hand against the stovetop for forgetting to turn it off. How was he to know that no one would hire Lithium for his shoddy reputation and even worse people skills? Pissing off Juliana Lange? No one in their right mind would do that. Present and smaller than most kids his age, Raleigh provided the perfect opportunity for Lithium to work off some his stress. At first Lithium just passed off Raleigh’s new injuries to his mother as the young boy being clumsy and careless but as time passed and work became scarcer and scarcer, where not even the most desperate would come to Lithium, Raleigh’s stepfather became less concerned with subtlety. Soon, it didn’t matter if Nina was in the room, a fuck up was a fuck up and there was the belt to his face, welts rising from the buckle. At too young an age, Raleigh learned just how much pain his tiny body could take. It didn’t matter where he hid when Lithium got home - under the bed, in the closet, on the fire escape - Lithium always found him. Especially on nights he was feeling creative. There are some nights he will never unlock in his brain.
He tried running away a couple of times but in Dertosa, sometimes even the feeling of rings cutting into your mouth and being locked in a trunk for a night is a better option than being fourteen and alone in the dark crevices of the city. In his teen years, Raleigh didn’t know what peace was, or what help was. Everyone knew what Lithium was doing and no one raised a hand. Things became bleaker with each morning, the simple routine of waking up, suffering, going to sleep becoming his own type of purgatory. But, it was his mother that broke his heart. God, he could forgive her for staying in Dertosa, for marrying Lithium, for doing nothing, but what he couldn’t forgive was her leaving him. One day Nina Turner just left and didn’t come back, leaving behind a note for her only son: i’m sorry. Raleigh didn’t even try to hide from Lithium that night when Lithium discovered his wife had abandoned him and saddled him with a son he never wanted. He thought he’d die that night for sure - he prayed for it - but like all times before, his prayers went unanswered. He spent most of the night outside of his body, looking down on his situation and reflecting on everything that had gone wrong. He came out of it with a clearer mind, a purpose finally.
In the early hours of the morning, Raleigh pulled himself to his feet, stumbled to the basement. Lithium kept all his “work tools” down there, including the steel tow chains for his more unsavory tasks. The feel of metal against his palm is one he remembers to this day as he wound the chain around his sleeping stepfather, hooking him to his beloved recliner. Lithium didn’t wake up until Raleigh splashed gasoline over him, methodical as he drenched the entire place. Then, Raleigh gave Lithium the chance to beg for his life, to threaten him, to say fucking anything. Either way, whatever Lithium said or did was inconsequential, his words not even registering to sixteen year old Raleigh. Raleigh lit the match, flicked it on his stepfather and stared. Lithium burned red as his namesake was supposed to and when the bastard finally stopped screaming, Raleigh burned the rest of the house down too.
The months after that are a blur of just trying to survive on the streets, for straining and struggling to continue on with some of Lithium’s old buddies and the questioning police breathing down his neck. Raleigh fully believed he wasn’t much longer for this world but salvation came in the form of a man. Not knowing whether or not God was sending him an angel for make up for his shit life, when Heroin picked Raleigh up from the streets, he was wary as he had been taught to be. Almost feral in the beginning, Raleigh lashed out at Heroin in confusion and desperation but each time, the Drug responded with patience and a kindness that he’d never known. Heroin wiped Raleigh’s record clean, warned off Lithium’s associates, and inspired a loyalty in him that still burns as brightly and strongly as that house fire all those years ago.
THE FACTS.
For all the sorrow and pain he caused, Raleigh is reluctant to admit that his stepfather taught him much. He learned the nature of Dertosa, the dog-eat-dog world, the ins and outs of crime. After all, what could he have done besides listen numbly everytime Lithium quit tormenting him and just began preaching to him. He did what he could from time to time to avoid his stepfather’s wrath by entertaining him as an unwitting apprentice - how to load a gun, where to stick a knife to avoid the ribs, what to do if the police ever came, how to inspire fear, the list goes on. The list always went on as he learned, picking up quickly what everyone was putting down. Lithium was his biggest teacher with Heroin a close second, though the latter is definitely more fond.
Aware of his own potential, Raleigh threw himself into becoming Heroin’s right hand man. If Heroin has a problem, Raleigh is the one who deals with it - through words or violence. Perhaps when he was younger, Raleigh would have mourned for the loss of a good life but what’s the use in lamenting what could have been? This is the world he was brought into, this is the world he would survive in. Of course, his current world is better than the former. He dresses better, eats better, is better but Lithium is a constant at Raleigh’s side - sneering and commenting on everything.
Raleigh isn’t a lap dog - filling his master’s ears with honeyed praise and pomp - but rather a pit bull at Heroin’s side. Intelligent and capable, there hasn’t been a problem that Raleigh hasn’t fixed for Heroin yet. Of course, he can’t do anything about Heroin’s inner demons but he can keep things running smoothly long enough to give him a peace of mind. He adapts to what Heroin needs him to be - a reminder, a threat, a friend, a shadow. At public events, Raleigh is always by Heroin’s side, doubling as both his right hand man and a bodyguard for anyone who dares. Polite, cordial even, Raleigh doesn’t waste time or anger when he can, striving for quick efficiency but resorting to unimaginable violence when needed. While not big on bare skin to bare skin contact from his experiences with Lithium, there is very little Raleigh won’t do for Heroin. He doesn’t ask, he just does.
