Anxiety Attacks.
After last night when I experienced one of the worst panic attacks Iโve had in a while I decided to compose a post with ways to calm down in order to try and avoid them. Hopefully this helps someone out there somehow?
CALMING
โซ If youโre in a crowded place when your attack happens, count the people in the room. โซ Repeat the alphabet forwards and backwards. โซ Wash your hands. โซ Drink water. โซ Listen to the sound of rain or wind, or white house in general. MyNoise.net is a customizable soundscape looper, and one of the best websites to resort to for this type of thing in my opinion. โซ Watch a candle burn. โซ Have a pet? Give it some love. โซ TEA. Green tea or peppermint tea works best. โซ Find the biggest blanket you can and wrap yourself in it. (Personally I burrito) โซ Create space! http://29a.ch/sandbox/2011/neonflames/# โซ Take a nap if possible, even if you donโt feel tired. 5-15 minute naps give boosts of energy. Or take a power nap, whatever youโre in the mood for. โซ This one may not apply to lots of people, but I find that studying/taking notes on certain topics helps. Mainly history. โซ Have a straw nearby? Breathe through it. I know it sounds crazy but it opens your lungs. โซ Count seconds up to a minute on a watch. โซ Clean. โซ Art in general. Paint, draw, play some music. โซ Dance like no one is watching. Iโm serious, go crazy. โซ Whisper funny things to yourself until you laugh. I find this works with โfuckity nopeโ. I know, crazy, but it works. โซ Scribble.
I canโt begin to explain to you how important this part is. Usually after I have an attack I feel weak, drained, and overall grey. You may feel so grey that you do nothing after your attack but lay there, but aftercare is utterly crucial.
Some things I do afterwards:
โซ Read. โซ Take a bath. Use a bath bomb, or bath salts, or nothing at all. Light some candles, play some music, and just relax. If baths arenโt your thing, take a shower. โซ Face masks are always a plus. They have some uber cheap ones at Target, more specifically. Highly recommended. โซ Four words: Mother. Fucking. Coconut. Oil. โซ Make food: usually I make a smoothie or, again, tea, and toast.
Everyone is different and will do different things to take care of themselves afterwards, but thereโs three things that need to remain constant in every routine.
โซ Make yourself your priority. Even if you have a whole list of responsibilities, put. Yourself. First. โซ Treat yourself. โซ Find positivity in even the smallest of things.
REMINDERS!!!
โซ Deep breathing. Focus on maintaining your breathing pattern. โซ Drink water whenever you get the chance. โซ Find positivity in even the smallest of things.
And most importantly:
โซ Everything is going to be okay.
