   “ Jeremiah! “

     Jedidiah pounds a fist on the other’s bedroom door, throwing a glance over his shoulder when he hears Tommy’s chainsaw revving somewhere across the house. He hasn’t a clue to why he doesn’t go into his own room; perhaps he fears his uncle will kick the door in and chop him to pieces. Jed instead yells louder, and slams both hands on the wooden door.

     The woman seemed to be speaking to him, but Jedidiah pays her no mind, as he does with most. The boy’s hands instead busy themselves with the rotted edge of his shirt, ripping strings from the soft cotton. His uncle Bubba had made a vague attempt at ending the habit, but no effort was made on part of his nephew.
