The NO FAKES Act Could Silence Satire, Commentary, And News | Electronic Frontier Foundation
The NO FAKES Act is supposed to target harmful AI-generated impersonations. But in reality, it will make it easier to suppress commentary, s
NO FAKES could also undermine the rights of the people it is supposed to protect. The new federal “likeness” right could be licensed or transferred to others, so individuals will lose control over the use of their own face and voice. That’s not theoretical—workers in the entertainment industry are routinely asked to sign broad contracts about the future use of their likenesses.

What is happening: There is a lot of pushback on KOSA and AI regulation. KOSA due to the duty of care and other problems, some in congress want it worse and some want it not as bad. AI regulation is the same, some want it and some want to ban it. Senator Blackburn and some other GOP leadership (House GOP leadership, Ted Cruz, etc) are working with the White House to reach some type of deal including KOSA, the No Fakes Act (an AI bill that sucks really bad), and other age verification provisions. House GOP leadership is going to the R's and D's in the House Energy and Commerce Committee to strike a deal. It is very critical we put our foot down and push even harder right now, because this can go very bad very quickly.

"Hello I am calling about the Kids Online Safety Act, The NO FAKES act, and a bunch of Age Verification mandates. being proposed
As has been said before, these age verification bills collect data all in one place for hackers to easily gather, making children less safe.
This has been shown when other countries tried like UK's Online Safety Act rollout.
KOSA not only has similar problems, but gives state attorney generals too much power to sue any website for any reason.
And finally, the No Fakes Act is written too broadly It. would make it so that all depictions of a person's likeness or voice are restricted [(not just ai generated] While sounding good on paper, this would in the process expose users, creators, platforms and developers exposed to lawsuits for everyday speech like memes and parodies. Making it so that anyone with deep-enough pockets could file a lawsuit to ANYONE they [accuse of using] AI for anything .
These are all disasters waiting to happen and I thus ask you oppose them."
and stuff on KOSA
"Multiple experts agree this bill pushes age verification, even with the new language. KOSA hands more private data of children to third party companies, by forcing it to be collected for identification purposes. That will give hackers and harasser and predators an easy way to find the information all in one place. This identification system proposal cannot replace proper parenting.
Please look elsewhere for a better way to protect our kids.
Something quick and simple to use while calling. from user spdy4
Greetings, my name is [Insert Name], and I am calling as one of your constituents to oppose KOSA, The NO FAKES act, and a bunch of Age Verification mandates. KOSA would open the door to soo many hackers, and should we really be handing our IDs and Data to Big Tech Giants like META, OpenAI, and Google? [we've seen in past with attempts in the UK that collecting this data makes it easy for hackers to find it all in one place] This would harm more children than it is protecting and goes against our first amendment rights of Free Speech and Privacy.
The NO FAKES act would make it so that all depictions of a person's likeness or voice are restricted [(not just ai generated] While sounding good on paper, this would in the process expose users, creators, platforms and developers exposed to lawsuits for everyday speech like memes and parodies. Making it so that anyone with deep-enough pockets could file a lawsuit to ANYONE they [accuse of using] AI for anything .
And Age Verification Mandates would require users to disclose personal information before accessing lawful speech online. Eliminating anonymity, and threatening our privacy. Making the Internet reveal ourselves on the internet where many people will be at Great risk of being exposed, having their data harvested by data brokers, and is incompatible with our God-given American right to free-expression. These bills would make the internet worse for everyone, and our economy. There are better ways of protecting kids online, but these bills would put this kids, and even adults into seriously grave danger. I urge you to say No to these bills, and to keep the Internet private, and open to the American peopl

Tim 100% put a full rickroll in a statement as a prank to Jon and was then shocked when he read the entire thing without blinking an eye in that same monotone narration voice
Watch the video for more context. Time to learn how to make and download existing vpns (not the sketchy free ones) as keir stalin is making plans to ban vpn/age verify vpns. What a world we live in. Call, email, and irl mail your reps, senators and governors. Sign petitions against these laws, no matter which bill it is under, if it risks privacy and freedoms, fight against it regardless. Anyway, stay safe, stay alert, and call it out. Both online and especially offline (in person/irl) where the majority is most unaware and that don't use the internet as their way of getting the news.
Government just prematurely ended debate on Bill C-22
The federal government decided to use a so-called “guillotine” time-limit all further clause by clause on Bill C-22 to just 30 minutes.1 This will block ANY committee debate that scrutinizes the dangerous surveillance powers in Part 2 of the bill.2
The government wants to jam Bill C-22 today, and vote it through the House tomorrow (June 19). We’re calling on MPs of all parties to refuse to advance Part 2 without full committee study, but we need you to help turn the pressure up.
Message your MP and demand they reject Bill C-22 TODAY! And if you can also chip in to support the critical work at the Senate and over the summer to stop C-22, please give what you can. Stop Bill C-22! Donate $10 to stop mass surveillance!
Why do we need to stop Bill C-22? This bill includes provisions that will compromise the security of every person in Canada. It would let the Minister of Public Safety issue secret orders compelling apps, messaging services, and other providers to build government access into their systems — orders that come with mandatory, permanent gag rules and no meaningful judicial check.3
Experts and major privacy-focused companies condemned this portion of the bill. Signal, DuckDuckGo, Proton, Windscribe, NordVPN, Apple, and Meta are among those warning that C-22 threatens encryption — the very foundation of your online privacy.4
The government is forcing through a secret-order regime it cannot defend on the merits, on an artificial deadline of its own making. Part 2 should be split off and sent back, not rushed past the public before the summer break. Please take 30 seconds to send a message to your MP today. And if you can, give what you can to support our work defending Canadian privacy. Add your voice now! Chip in to defend Canadian privacy!
Whatever happens this Friday, our work is just starting. We heard rumours Senate would start studying this bill early so government could force C-22 this month; and by turning up the heat with our peers, we helped stop that. Through July, August and September, we will keep fighting for real study of C-22’s problems and amendments that remove its huge privacy problems.Â
But we’re a very small team, and right now our June drive is well below our target to stay viable through this year. If you’re able to give, please give now.
Thank you for all you do.
Matt at OpenMedia
P.S. The Liberal government is using their majority in Parliament to gag debate on the most reckless surveillance powers Canada has seen in a generation. They’ve signalled it wants Bill C-22 passed before the House rises tomorrow (June 19). Please join us in calling on MPS of all parties to reject Bill C-22 NOW!
"it's for the kids" yet nobody has say in it, no adult can opt out, and your privacy is at risk
"it's for the kids" yet children in abusive or oppressive households no longer have a support system online
"it's for the kids" yet the people passing these bills are involved some of the biggest global "đź’Ť" 's known to man
"it's for the kids" yet you're allowing the government to đź‘€ you more, little by little, as each law is set in stone
"it's for the kids" yet they're passing laws in some countries that require you to scan your eyes just to use your phone
will it still be "good" and "for the kids" when you can't do anything without being watched? will it still be "for the kids" when governments start purposefully filtering news and what sites you're allowed to visit and see, even when you do verify yourself? will it still be "for the kids" when you no longer own anything? will it still be "for the kids" when they continue to cross personal boundaries, or will you continue to be willfully ignorant and part of the problem? will it still be "for the kids" when you no longer have any online freedom?
Honestly I'm scared about all those stupid age verification bills passing and that censorship bill kosa I don't want them to pass I don't want to lose access to the internet and I don't want to lose my friends not to mention I don't want my content I am praying and crying that none of them end up passing and succeeding
And If they do (which I hope not)I think I just might end up blowing my brains out So for the sake of freedom of speech and internet freedom please use your voice bully those politicians sign petitions get mad make those politicians cry do whatever you can
FIGHT FOR THE FUTURE - Hate groups poisoning our movement
We’re launching something important for Pride Month.
For a long time, we’ve known that there are some less-than-scrupulous people working on tech policy. It turns out that several powerful anti-LGBTQ+ organizations have infiltrated the movement—lobbying for bills like KOSA and pretending to be experts on what keeps kids safe online.1
The Heritage Foundation, NCOSE, the Ethics and Public Policy Center, and the Eagle Forum are Religious Right groups that have been active for decades.2 They got their start opposing marriage equality and fighting abortion rights. Now, they’re trying to blacklist LGBTQ+ and abortion speech.
This Pride Month, we're asking digital rights groups to cut ties with the Religious Right. If you agree that that anti-LGBTQ+ hate groups have no place in this movement, sign our letter now.
SIGN NOW
Unfortunately, the digital rights space is small, and Heritage et al. are sneaky. We learned that some digital rights groups have collaborated with the Religious Right—whether they know it or not.
Humanpower can feel scarce in the digital rights movement, and sometimes we work with people with whom we disagree. But we have to draw a line: collaborating with hate groups is unacceptable, especially as LGBTQ+ people are being targeted by a government partially staffed by Religious Right figures.
If you can sign, thanks in advance. If you know or work with organizations who would like to be a listed signatory on the open letter, indicate that on the form and we’ll be in touch.
