Don't ask me why I suddenly remembered this now, or why I'm telling you (probably cause I think you have some of the best, most nuanced takes on these kind of things) but I once heard someone genuinely claim that the show We Bare Bears was problematic and promoted bestiality because the fully-anthro, fully-sentient bear characters occasionally had human love interests. Media illiteracy and fandom discourse is a fucking nightmare.

I feel like sometimes some people fling words around without knowing what they mean. I've always felt like part of wanting to make criticisms is that you need to LEARN the medium involved. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, and there's no, like, "wrong" way to enjoy things- but I want to use my words effectively.

You lose a lot of credibility imo by flinging around hot topic terms without respecting the seriousness of them. Like. Objectively speaking. If your argument is "I think this chill children's cartoon about brothers in a zany world is promoting an extremely taboo and morally twisted crime to children" you need some SERIOUS evidence.

That's not me saying it's impossible for things to get snuck in- "the writer's poorly disguised fetish" is a well-known term for a reason, and there have been examples of actual fetishistic material put into children's media: muscle growth, diapers, feet. I'm not saying media is squeaky clean or that we shouldn't keep an eye out for that sort of thing. But also. We Bare Bears???? The cute bear show with the most popular ship being a panda bear and bigfoot?? You looked at that and somehow got "sexual intent" out of it???? I can only imagine how outraged they would be by Bojack Horseman.

Personally, I think anthro animals in "real world" universes are a great use of symbolism to feeling like an outsider or an other. We Bare bears is, ultimately, about the bros being bros. The main connection in the mostly episodic environment is that these three guys found each other as children and have been trying desperately to live their best lives since. They were homeless children in a box ffs. They're trying to make friends, a home.
