Last summer I flew to Florence to study conservation and preservation. On the first day of class, my best friend stopped breathing in his sleep.
It’s too late, other friends admonished me. Stay there. Good dog.
I looked at all the presents I had amassed for everyone back home. His: a leather-bound notebook with gilded detailing. I kept it under my pillow until I realized they were cremating the body. There wouldn’t be a grave to rest it on. No site to say goodbye.
I tried to commune with his spirit via leather-bound-notebook-journaling, but gave up on the occult a week in. I’m home now. I make ugly Kim Kardashian faces when I cry and I picture him laughing at them from the Other Side to stop.
In a corner of my sock drawer: unclaimed presents, buried under pantyhose.
- Alana Mohamed has presents if you want them. Tweet her abt it @alanamhmd
Summer in Colorado.
Song of the Day.
WAKE UP, THURSDAY
Chaka for the Wednesday win.
Song of the day. A must-listen.
A sound artist named Brendan Landis, who records as Hey Exit, has created a fascinating piece by combing every known recording of Satie's Gymnopedie 1.
Good morning, Mountain Time. Good morning, snow day.
Tune of the Day.
2010ish?? The first time I saw Kurt at the Mill, I was foolish enough to try to go a mere 45 min early. I was somehow able to squeeze through the crowd to a group of people standing by the band door, where I was routinely questioned how I got in. Once he and Lawrence shuffled in, they started with the most delicate version of this tune. You could hear the hammers hitting the keys, a touch of felt, every choice of glottal offset, every pianissimo. I wish I could make love to a mic like that.
Friday's got me like this:
Long-legged cat leap-frogging over a disembodied mutant cranium. A6, 2015.
We found three seats in a corner of the back room. Glasses of thick pink and sentient from a five arm scunge-malfunction behind the bar. Filled up with yellow legs and red mouth until we couldn’t hear each other. Next to the fireplace a black door whispered of downstairs come and see. One by one. Escape these vile pill pushers. Up arse and eye hole. Walls painted with unknown symbol and stink of maple syrup on third-rate bacon. An empty throne. A burning sock. Etc.
