When the subject of Japanese planing contests comes up, often there are jokes made about what one could do with the shavings. Toilet paper is a frequent suggestion. 

Or you could make a humidifier. This little device is made of hinoki. The base holds water, and thin veneers of wood are placed into the base. The endgrain absorbs the water into the veneers, and the water then evaporates into the room.
