In the Recording Studio With You | Chapter 4: Writer’s Retreat Part 1

“I can’t believe we got invited!” James gushed, sitting atop his luggage and sliding across the marble floors of the hotel. 

“Speak for yourself,” Lily chuckled, pasting her name tag onto her shirt. “I know my value.” 

In truth, Lily was equally surprised. Amelia Bones was one of the most sought after producers in the industry and every year, she invited the best and brightest producers, songwriters, and engineers to a week-long retreat at her family’s hotel in Scotland. 

James wheeled himself over to the lift in Lily’s wake, humming the love song they’d last written for Remus and Sirius to perform at the Edinburgh festival. This retreat culminated in the end of Lily and James’ working relationship and, James hoped, it would be the start of their boyfriend-girlfriend, hold-hands-and-walk-into-the-sunset relationship. 

“Hold the lift!” a shrill, panicked voice called out.

James immediately stuck his arm out and pushed on the doors until they got the message and slid open again. 

“Thank you! You’re a life-saver!” The woman could not be described as bubbly, although her words could be infused with exclamation points. She had thin lips, overlined with bright red lipstick, and a short, sharp bob of brown hair. 

“Oh my God, you’re Amelia Bones,” Lily was saying before she could stop herself. 

The woman smiled like one might to a child who’d spoken out of turn. The child was cute, but not very classy. “Pleased to meet you, Lily Evans.”

Oh, right, her name tag was going to forever associate her with this faux pas. She wanted to die. 

“And uh, Bowie Davidson?” Amelia raised a perfectly plucked eyebrow at James, who saw name tags as an opportunity for mischief. 

“You don’t think that’s my legitimately legal name?” James raised one eyebrow back, smirk blooming across his face, carving out deep dimples beside his lips — 

Lily shook herself out of it just as the doors opened. “Well, this is my floor. It was nice meeting you both — I mean, you, Amelia, obviously, I know James. Er, can I call you Amelia?”

Before Amelia could answer, the doors slid shut and Lily was left facing the reflective exterior. Her cheeks were about as much on fire as her hair.

I don’t usually post personal messages on here, but I realize I’ve really left you all hanging for a while. The thing is, I really thought I would get back in the saddle after a bit of a winter holiday. 

I’ve been telling myself (and my wonderfully caring friends) that I’m just busy right now, but that’s a bit of a lie. I haven’t been writing lately because I want to make sure it comes from a place of whole-hearted happiness and love.

Dancing Around You | Chapter 14: Freestyle Charms

Professor Flitwick was obsessed with festivities, any festivities — Halloween, Christmas, New Year, and of course, Valentine’s Day. On February 14th, his fifth-year classroom was filled with pink, red, and white ribbons, lace, tissue paper, and heart-shaped candies. It looked like the inside of Madam Puddifoot’s. 

“You will be learning freestyle charms in preparation for your O.W.L.s,” the professor squeaked from atop his favored stack of books (old editions of A Beginner’s Guide to Transfiguration, much to McGonagall’s dismay if she ever found out). “Who can tell me the four requirements for good freestyle charms work?”

“Hey, Evans,” James called out from the back of the room, where he sat next to Sirius. “Are you the four requirements for good freestyle charms? Because you are F.I.N.E.!”

Lily, who was sat in the very front of the room, blushed and shook her head before burying her face in her hands. Beside her, Mary MacDonald giggled and ribbed her teasingly. 

It didn’t help that Lily was wearing the Gryffindor Quidditch sweater he’d finally managed to finish knitting for her. It was just a really comfortable sweater, alright?

“Thank you, Mr. Potter,” Flitwick chirped with the slightest hint of a reprimand to his tone. “Now who can tell me what that mnemonic means?” 

Lily and Remus’ hand shot up at the same time. 

“The first two, please, Ms. Evans.” Flitwick smiled encouragingly at his best student.

“Finesse and Imagination.” 

“The next two, Mr. Lupin?” Flitwick prompted, looking kindly on the boy who’d once asked him for help with cosmetic charms to hide his scars, but who now wore them proudly.

“Narrative and Emotion.”

“Excellent! Ten points to Gryffindor, each.” He turned to address the rest of the class. “Your wand work must have finesse, so you will hold it between your thumb and index finger, like so. You must be able to imagine precisely what you want to accomplish and then organize it into a clear, step-by-step narrative. If you cannot do this mentally, you can invoke the charms in stages.” To demonstrate, he first made a long red ribbon shimmy in waves, then he had it loop itself into a heart, and finally, he had it expand and contract as though it were alive and beating. “Finally, you must channel your emotions. This is what sets freestyle charms apart from the others we’ve learned so far. You have to mean it. Otherwise, your results will fade quickly, or else remain rather lackluster. You may begin your experiments now and I will be going around, so if you need any help, just ask!”

Distraction Chpt 23

Snippet:

It was nearly midnight when James gently pushed the door to the lounge open. He didn't look surprised to see Lily still awake. If anything, he looked resigned. He sat down next to her with a sigh.

There was a certain tightness in his expression, in the flat line of his full lips and the strain around his usually merry eyes, and Lily felt anxiety coil within her body, as well. He rested his elbows on his knees and folded his hands, his shoulders slumped forward as he faced her.

“All right, Evans?”

She bristled at the casual greeting. “I’m honestly not sure, Potter. Where’ve you been?”

He stared at her for a moment, hazel eyes wary behind his glasses. “The Death Eaters had a meeting tonight,” he said finally. He shook his head, then reached up to ruffle the back of his hair. “Sirius and I went to see what they’re up to.”

All thoughts of Slughorn’s party flew from Lily’s head, and her eyes widened in shock. “What? How did you find out about it? And why didn’t you tell me?”

James closed his eyes and rolled his neck from side to side, sighing, but his body remained visibly tense. “I overheard Snape and Regulus talking about it earlier this week,” he said slowly. “I told Sirius, and we decided to investigate.”

Her eyebrows drew together with her frown. “You told Sirius, but not me.”

“I told Sirius because it was his brother I overheard. And then I wasn’t sure what to do, you know, whether I should tell Dumbledore immediately or find out more about what they were planning first.” James shrugged, his expression somehow both defiant and sheepish all at once. “I was going to tell you,” he began, “but once I decided someone needed to go see what they’re up to, I decided not to. You’d have tried to stop me.”

“I might not’ve,” Lily snapped, her tone made harsher by her frustration with James’ explanation. He cocked his head at her, his lips pursed in doubt, and she raised her eyebrows in challenge. “But either way, you should’ve told me.”

James narrowed his eyes, his gaze hot with some emotion she couldn’t quite place. Through clenched teeth and a smirk more grimace than smile, he ground out, “As much as I enjoy your company, I am allowed to go places without you, you know. I’m not required to tell you my every move.”

Teddy was something of an enigma in their school. He wasn’t a rebel, he only looked the part with his dyed pink hair (or turquoise, depending on the day) and earrings (pitch black plastic bought cheaply with his own pocket money or the sparkling diamond of a family heirloom). Otherwise, he was a good student, a better friend, and the best football player since his godfather, Harry Potter. (Okay, so maybe not the best, but he loved playing wide receiver, even if it didn’t get him as much street cred as playing quarterback like Harry used to.)

As his best friend since they were in diapers (well, she was in diapers, he’d grown out of them), Victoire was his main confidante, his trusty girl next door (literally and platonically). She was beautiful like her mother and smart like her father but in the typical way of teenagers, they would not let her have everything, and so she was unpopular, was never invited out like Teddy, never been kissed, never been on a date. Her father and numerous uncles were thrilled at how unproblematic she was. 

Except, of course, she wasn’t. Because Victoire was in love with her best friend, who was going off to college next year, two whole years ahead of her, and who, if he managed to get out of this argument, still had a girlfriend...

1. Cover of Dawn from the P&P (2005) soundtrack - for @solstilla and @midnightelite who are just so nice to me, and it’s the only recording I’ve posted here that I still like when I listen to it in full 😂

2. Recording of Raindrop Prelude by Chopin - for my dear friend in Chopin and Liszt @constancezin​, this was the first recording I ever posted, and listening to it again… I don’t think it’s as bad as I thought it was when I first posted it (though it could definitely still be better!!!) 😊

3. Recording of Pathetique Sonata’s 2nd movt by Beethoven - this was just… so hard to record, definitely one of the harder songs I’ve ever played 😬 I’m still not as satisfied with the way it sounds as I’d like but the fact that I was able to play it through and not sound like I was just plain banging the keys means I’m at least making some progress XD Maybe I’ll be able to re-record it better in 2021? After several more hours of practice?? 😅🤞🤞

4. And then there’s this, which was supposed to be what I imagined Lily’s hair in a scene from a Jily fic I read would look like, but I didn’t end up liking anything else I drew for the scene except her hair so I just added a shadow of a face so it’s not just a picture of… creepy floating hair (it was also my first time drawing in the shadows of a human face and… well, it got me really excited to get more confident at drawing humans and faces and all the stuff i love in fanart so… 😁) 😅

2020 Creator Wrap: Favourite Works

1. Dancing Around You (Jily Hogwarts era canon-compliant) - you’re probably tired of hearing me talk about this one but IT WAS MY FIRST JILYTOBER OK?? I didn’t expect it to turn out that well and YET! :D Especially because at first, I was writing one or two chapters a day, but then my weekdays started to get really busy so I binge-wrote like, 5 or 6 chapters over the weekends...

2. I’ll Go the Distance (Jily Wolfstar Dorlene College AU texting fic) - again, heavily rec’d already but I still love this fic for all the banter-writing practice it gave me! I also got to make James a singer in his college a cappella group and Fleamont is Lily’s chem professor, so what’s not to love? I’ve also managed to fool people into thinking I’m funny with this, so that’s always great :P

3. Up to No Good / Mischief Managed (Jily Wolfstar Band AU) - I made so many friends through this fic, 3 spin-off fics, and over 2 albums worth of magic-themed songs for the Marauders (that’s their band name, ofc). Really, I just had the best time writing this fic right around when the pandemic first hit and it was only supposed to be 10 chapters but I take my readers’ feedback and suggestions very siriusly so it’s now 25/25 ;)

4. Not Throwing Away My (One-)Shot (Harry Potter/Marauders drabbles/ficlets) - I really like this collection because until I started taking requests, I had no idea just how fast I could write (apparently it’s pretty fast if I’m in the proper mood) and if I have nothing else to my name when I die an untimely death, at least I have that :’) (I’ll be updating this with all my #12daystochristmas drabbles soon!)

5. The Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee (post-war golden trio era) - I really wanted to write a fic about the years just after ‘97 because it seems like there would be so much to deal with and process for everyone. I think I also have a record number of well-developed OCs in this fic and they’re my babies. Anyway, this fic is very long (73,821 words), still not done, but I went in with a plan and we’re 5 chapters away from the end so here’s to finishing it in 2021!

Lily fidgeted nervously with the end of her braid, even as her chin jutted out confidently. “Did you… think I wouldn’t be glad to see you?”

“Well…” James chuckled lightly. “If I’ve learned anything, it’s to never assume to know what you’re thinking…”

“That’s… really mature of you, actually.”

“Thanks, I’ve had seventeen years to work on it.”

“You know that they say, practice makes perfect.”

“You think I’m perfect?” James smirked.

Lily blushed. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

“What do the Muggles call it?” James continued, wiggling his eyebrows. “A Freudian slip? It reveals your truest, innermost feelings?”

Lily sniffed delicately. “I suppose you do need more hot air in your hard head otherwise your neck would crumble under the pressure.”

James guffawed. “You’re a riot, Evans. A perfect, brilliant, beautiful riot.”

And then there’s either Lily or James’ declarations of love from I’ll Go the Distance (beta’d by the incredible @xomarauders), which I started writing entirely upon @pianistbynight‘s request XD

Lily Evans: You don’t have to say anything right now, or ever. If you want we can pretend this never happened because I value our friendship too much to let anything get in the way of it like before… You didn’t… and I think that’s part of the reason why I love you now.

You always put others first.

You have a wonderful disposition.

You care deeply without reservation.

And I don’t know what makes me think that I could be The Person in your life who puts you first and who never fails to put you in a good mood and who loves you for everything you are but also everything you’re not… but I want to be. I want to learn to be if you’ll let me.

i’m sorry i don’t have a more eloquent reply on hand… you’d think i would after years of loving you but i think that love’s changed and grown with us, so i can never pin it down to one single declaration.

i just thought i’d better say something already since it seems like you’re freaking out a little over there :)

let’s just say that if you asked me to, i would do or not do, be or not be anything you wanted, no questions asked. i trust you with my life, my love, my everything.

My personal favorite thing I wrote this year is the song that James claims will be Lily's Grammy-winning track  in Lily and the Witches (in the chapter where we blame it on Mary's obsession with the Corrs) because obviously, he is her #1 fan. I've gotten some people asking me if the songs in this are by "real artists" or if I made them up, so I think that's a compliment? 🙈 

It goes like, "Light go before me / though the darkness still surrounds / and I can't undo what evil I have done / I see before me / nothing that I thought I'd have / by giving everything I had..." and I know that doesn't always rhyme but it  FLOWS and I like it when songs can flow without rhyming and I really like songs where the chorus changes with the verses, like not a lot but just enough to keep you on your toes and I was able to do that here so I'm really proud of that! 😊

My least favorite is Riddle's first appearance in Two Shots of Whiskey because I had the right idea and if you are a reader with a willing imagination, you can get what I was going for, no doubt, but I feel like I could've made the transition between visitors smoother and it's just slightly frustrating for me because I still don't know what I would change here to make it smooth yet quick because it needs to be a quick transition as well and I just feel like it COULD have been perfect and I REALLY like the concept I had in my head for it and tried to get down in writing. I don't know, maybe that's as good as it can be already. You can read it for yourself and let me know 😅

My favorite description/narration is probably when I described Crookshanks as a cat who meows like a human pretending to be a cat in The Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee (post-war golden trio era) and I think I just like it because Crookshanks 100% WOULD but I've never seen him described that way before. Either that or when there was a dark mark at a Harpies match Ginny was playing and I ended on my first serious cliffhanger in the fic, very poignantly satisfying. Ooooh, I also like the fight scene with Luna, Rolf, and the golden trio in a South American rain forest. (Thank you to my critique partner, @elanev91 for always making me describe shit in this fic, btw, because without you this fic would make much less sense to anyone who isn't me 😝)
