And, with another absolute banger by the Goo Goo Dolls, that was Treasure Planet.
I was a little worried that it was just nostalgia that made me want to come back to this movie. Particularly since it took this long to do it. But it was every bit as good as I remembered. Perhaps more so now that I can appreciate it as an adult.
Silver’s speeches to Jim, both his “Plans go Astray” and “Makings of Greatness” were things I really needed to hear as a kid. However, as a kid, “Makings of Greatness was more it. Now, as an adult, “Plans go Astray” is really what I needed to hear. Particularly after so many of my plans DID go astray.
The bond between Jim and Silver is something I have always loved. I can still see its influence in some of my own writing over a decade later. And I well and truly consider Delbert and Amelia my first OTP. I can definitely see why and why they were the fist pairing I actually wrote fic for all those years ago.
On top of all of that, the animation is out of this world. This is the last movie I can really remember looking this beautiful. From the wonderfully hand drawn characters to the masterfully painted backgrounds to the beautifully blended CG that I, personally, think looks better than Atlantis. I now know that this is where my special interest in filmography started and I remember spending HOURS watching the behind the scenes for this movie alone. And for good reason. It’s amazing.
The music is amazing as well, both the soundtrack and the Goo Goo Dolls songs. Personally, I think “I’m Still Here” could rival “Married Life” from Up in terms of music and story telling.
All in all? 100/10. I love this movie so much and I know that I will come vac to it for years to come. Now, if you don’t mind. I unearthed those old fics and would very much like to edit and post them.
