As far as I’m concerned, the real canon OUAT “officially ended with “Going Home” (3x11), anyway. I think Nealfire’s death left a big void in the heart of family on the show, and even more than that, it was obvious they had Hook take his place as Emma’s main love interest on the show, which meant that Rumple (and by extension Belle), Emma, Henry, Snowing, and even Hook himself all “had” to be completely destroyed in one way or another to make Hook look like a “hero” inorganically in the writers laziness to create organic conflict/character development.
It’s not even that I don’t think that any of these characters/relationships could heal healthily without Nealfire there. I liked his character, and I definitely feel like he was wasted potential. However, the major issue is that the writers killed off their core themes of family, organic character development, second chances, true heroism, hope, equal opportunity, emotional depth, and meaningful redemption by killing off Nealfire through inorganic means, resurrecting Rumple through inorganic means, and by “redeeming” Hook through inorganic means by setting him up as Emma’s main love interest, which was organically meant to be Neal’s role on the show that connected Emma, Rumple, Belle, Henry, Snow, David, and Regina all together as a family who was united. Hook didn’t fit that place in their family circle organically “redeemed” as Emma’s main love interest. Nealfire did. But since Hook “had” to take that spot inorganically instead, so that CS “could happen,” Emma, Henry, Rumple, Belle, Snow, and David all “had” to lose their ways in the narrative from 3B-S6 (and even in S7, I wasn’t really happy after all the character assassinations, and quick fixes) to prop him up onto a pedestal of “redemption” that he didn’t do much to earn himself, anyway.,
