“Oh, sorry!” Elle ducked her head, pretending to be fullyimmersed in studying out of her… upside down notebook. She grimaced; there wasno way Emmett hadn’t noticed that. She flipped it around in her lap. Slowly,her eyes drifted up to watch him again, though this time she was sure to remainmore discreet.

…Or so she thought. “You’re doing it again,” Emmett accused,setting the cup in his hand down on his desk in favor of crossing his arms.

A grin tugged at her lips, but she pushed it down. “Ipromise, I’m trying not to!” Emmett’s eyes narrowed, and she tried her bestpleading you-love-me-I’m-so-cute look to try to make his annoyance go away. Itmostly worked, as he shook his head and picked up the cup again. She watchedkeenly as he lifted the spoon, but just as it was almost at his lips, he caughther gaze and dropped it back into the cup.

“You’re staring. Again.”

Elle exhaled, slumping her shoulders and tilting her head tothe side. “I’m sorry, I just…do you like it?”

Emmett’s eyebrows raised. “That’s what this is about?”

Elle clasped her hands in front of her face like an excited child.“Well?”

“It’s…interesting,” Emmett hedged, and she dropped herhands, pouting.

“Interestingdoesn’t mean you like it. Come on, Emmett, what’s not to like? It’s green teaice cream! It’s refreshing, and tasty, and I think you can even argue that it’sgood for you.”

The side of Emmett’s lips tipped upwards, and then he waspicking up the cup again. “I didn’tsay that I didn’t like it. It’s just different. But yes, Elle, I like it.”

She squealed, pumping a fist into the air in triumph. “I told you you’d like it!”

“BUT,” he interrupted her self-congratulatory party, “I’dstill prefer good old coffee ice cream.”

Elle shrugged, still too giddy about introducing him tosomething new to listen. “But you like it. I told you I was sure you would. Nowwe can totally go on ice cream dates and get the same ice cream and share.”

Emmett rolled his eyes at her, letting out a soft laugh ashe turned back to his work. “Sure, as if we’ve never shared ice cream before ona date. But I’m pretty sure that’s not your point. So. Here,” he handed it toher, grinning as she happily accepted the cup to finish what was left.

Birds were chirping, the sun was shining, and Elle washighlighting her assigned case for Federal Courts and the Federal System.

Note: Softball IS actually a big law school thing. Bigger at my law school than most, but Harvard Law definitely has softball teams and they definitely go to interstate tournaments by other law schools.

By 3L Spring, Elle had figured out how to keep herconcentration studying outside on a nice day. The first sunny and warm Saturdayof the season therefore found Elle, Emmett, Enid, and Vivienne working outsideon a picnic blanket in Harvard Yard, surrounded by undergrads and otherstudents that had decided the weather was too good to waste.

Emmett’s voice pulled her attention away from hercoursework, and she looked up, first to his face and then following his line ofsight. A group of law students – 2Ls, she was pretty sure – were engaged in asoftball practice. “Softball?” Elle shrugged as Emmett nodded. The longer Elle watchedthe more she understood Emmett’s comment. For instance, there was the guy whochugged down a beer and then picked up a bat. Entertaining as it was to watchhim miss hitting the pitch, Elle couldn’t claim an interest in the sport. “Mm.I wasn’t very good at it, either.” She went back to her casebook.

“Oh, well if thatisn’t an understatement,” Enid crowed, elbowing Elle’s side. Elle scowled ather, but it was too late, Emmett already seemed intrigued.

“Oh? How so?”

“I don’t think Elle managed to hit a ball once.”

“Viv!” Elle whined. It went ignored. “They’re probably practicing for a tournament, why can’t we focus onthem? Look, that guy’s too drunk to hit the ball!”

“This is the cost of hanging out with your 1L sectionmates,Elle. We know things,” Enid laughed, stealing Elle’s yellow highlighter fromher hand. “Like the fact that you couldn’t hit the ball sober.”

“I was very good at cheering on the team,” Elle informedEmmett, who was smirking at her. When he didn’t reply, she wrinkled her nose. “Youjust said you couldn’t be part ofthat team, so, why am I getting that face?”

“Because I’m remembering 1L Elle Woods, the fish out ofwater flirting with her ex, and imagining her trying to hit a ball with a bat,”Emmett teased. She rolled her eyes.

“Good thing I dropped out of our section’s softball teamfaster than I gave up on law school,” she deadpanned, then held up her index fingerin Vivienne’s direction, already anticipating her retort. “Don’t say his name. We’re having a nice outing, there’s no need tosully it with the past.”

Vivienne closed her mouth, leaning back on the picnic blanketwith a shrug as she returned to flipping through index cards she’d made.

“So, Elle actuallyplayed softball 1L year,” Emmett mused, watching her fondly.

“If you can call it playing,” Enid teased again.

“OmiGod, Enid, just because you were the team’s best hitterdoesn’t mean you get to mock me!”

“Actually, I think it does.” Emmett’s grin was blinding, andElle finally abandoned her casebook onto the blanket, scooting over to placeherself in her boyfriend’s lap.

“Guess we’re softball compatible, too,” she mumbled into hisshoulder.

“The measure of everylaw school relationship, naturally,” Vivienne chimed in, and Elle shifted toglare at her.

Emmett’s fingers cleared her hair off of her neck. “I just haveone more question. Did you wear pink to every game?”

Enid and Vivienne’s laughter was enough of an answer.
