How to Create the Perfect Hashtag for Your Wedding, and Your Wedding Photos
We’ve basically reached a point where creating a good hashtag for your wedding isn’t an option, it’s imperative, unless you’re planning a completely unplugged celebration of course in which no phones, cameras, or technology of any kind will be allowed.
And while we don’t recommend relying solely on guests for your wedding photos—which we’re not just saying because we do wedding photography in NY and NJ—there’s no point in fighting it. Your guests will be snapping pictures throughout the celebration, so it’s up to you to make sure they all end up in the same place.
For some more general tips on handling guest photos, check out this post, Tips for Collecting, Sharing, and Saving Guest Wedding Photos, but today’s post is all about creating the right hashtag for your big day.
Start with the basics.
First of all, like any other part of the wedding planning process, it’s easy to start overthinking things when it comes to creating the right hashtag for your big day, so it helps to start with the basics and go from there.
Start with your and your partner’s first and last names, but don’t stop there. Remember, your wedding hashtag needs to be as memorable as possible in order for people to actually use it, so any nicknames you or your partner have acquired along the way should be considered.
People usually come up with nicknames precisely because they’re easier to remember than the person’s real name, so if you’ve got one, now’s the time to put it to use.
Now, if your and/or your partner’s names are fairly common and neither of you have had the good fortune of being bestowed any nicknames yet, then you may want to start thinking about incorporating the basic numbers associated with your wedding day such as its year or date or basic “wedding words” like “love” and “newlyweds.”
Explore all possible “ways” with your words.
Again, the whole point of your wedding hashtag is to give your guests a memorable name for the place that they should be putting their photos. It’s all about making it as easy for them to post and share their pictures as possible.
That’s why, when trying to come up with your hashtag, you should look for any opportunity to be clever in terms of your word play. Make sure you’re considering all your tools, like rhyming, alliteration, synonyms, etc. Just be careful not to be confusing or misleading. A lengthy acronym, for example, can be somewhat cryptic.
But take it from us as longtime NY / NJ wedding photographers, you should always be looking for any way, within reason, to make your hashtag a little more witty and clever so that it rolls off the tongue and is, therefore, hard to forget.
Watch for potentially easy mistakes.
Sometimes, couples get so carried away with the way their hashtags sound that they don’t consider all the possible issues that people may have when it comes to actually spelling them out.
For instance, you may find that there’s two of the same letter in separate words which are right next to each other, which can lead to some easy mistakes. So, in a case like that, you’d want to take measures to help people avoid them.
It could be as simple as rearranging a couple of words to make things a bit clearer, and capitalizing the first letters of each word within your hashtag tends to make it a lot easier for guests to see where one word starts and the next ends, especially when the hashtag’s on the longer side.
No matter what measures you take to avoid these kinds of easy mistakes, though, the point is that you need to consider how easy it will be for guests not just to remember your hashtag but to then use it correctly too.
Check to ensure your hashtag’s unique enough.
While making your wedding hashtag as memorable as possible should always be your primary concern, if it’s already been used by another wedding couple then it doesn’t matter how unforgettable it is.
If that’s the case, there will likely be a ton of photos completely unrelated to your wedding day that are tagged the exact same way, and that can make things very difficult, if not nearly impossible.
If, on the other hand, you check your potential hashtag and find that there’s just a few photos tagged to it or, better yet, that there’s none at all, then you can go ahead and move forward with it.
The bottom line is that the last thing you’d want to do is to print your save-the-dates with your hashtag on them only to find out that it was ultimately a bad choice, because that’ll only make things more confusing for guests. So, make sure you do a good check before making any final decisions.
Once you know it, show it!
Now, once you’ve found a collection of words that are amply unique and you’ve explored all your options in terms of making your hashtag more memorable and easy to use, then it comes down to getting it out to your guests.
Like mentioned above, save-the-dates are commonly used to spread the word about wedding hashtags nowadays, but that’s not the only way you can get the word, or words, out there.
For instance, if you and your partner create a wedding website, you can include your hashtag on it as well as in any other pre-wedding content you create, and then there’s your actual wedding day to consider.
Once your big day arrives, you can put your hashtag on place-cards, programs, napkins, etc. You can even get signs made that let people know how to tag their pictures because, when it comes to spreading the word about your hashtag, the more places you can display it, within reason of course, the better.
Give creating the right hashtag the time and thought it deserves.
Again, you shouldn’t be solely relying on the photography skills of your friends and family members when it comes to capturing all your wedding day’s special moments, but the fact of the matter is that guests will be taking their own pictures whether you like it or not, and you’ll want to ensure that their work all ends up in one place.
That’s why creating the right hashtag for your wedding day is so important, and why it deserves so much careful thought and consideration. We hope this post helps, and for some examples of great hashtags, check out this post from EasyWeddings.com.au, 15 awesome hashtags used by real couples.

Epic Reception Entrance Ideas That’ll Make for Unforgettable Wedding Photos
While there will be so many memorable moments throughout your wedding reception, you won’t want your photographers to miss your and your partner’s entrance.
Rarely will your entering a room generate such emotion, which is why these moments make for such great photos all by themselves, but with a little careful planning, they can become truly unforgettable.
And as a wedding photography company in NY and NJ that’s been in the industry for years, we’ve seen our share of epic reception entrances. So, read on for a few tips and ideas on how to make your entrance hard to forget.
Take advantage of your venue’s epicness.
There are so many things that you, your partner, and your guests can do to make your reception entrance more memorable, but, sometimes, it just comes down to location, location, location.
If your reception space has an amazing double-staircase or magnificent entrance doors or, even better, if it has some type of built-in entrance designed just for this reason, take advantage of it.
Make sure you and your partner look at every possibility at your location because you may find that you can make your entrance a whole lot more memorable simply by moving the action to another area.
Allow your shadows to enter first.
Another way to make your reception entrance a little more epic is to have a projection screen set up so that your guests will see your and your partner’s silhouettes before seeing you two, in the flesh.
It’s a great way to make the whole moment more unique and memorable, and you can even take it a step further and start your first dance as shadows.
Your guests will never forget the sight, and take it from us as longtime NY and NJ wedding photographers, you’ll absolutely love having these kinds of additions for your wedding photo album later.
Plan a flash dance mob.
If you don’t know what a flash mob is, it’s simply when a group of people assemble suddenly and perform an unusual act for a brief amount of time before quickly dispersing, and many wedding couples are weaving the concept into their reception entrances to make them more unique.
Basically, the idea is to have the wedding party enter the reception space in the traditional fashion, but then switch things up when it comes time for the bride and groom to enter.
Typically, the DJ changes the music, the wedding party unexpectedly breaks into a choreographed dance, and then the newlyweds join in. Other guests usually join in on the fun and the whole setup tends to lead to great pictures, whether they’re of the action itself or of the reactions of surprised guests.
Finish the race…together!
Now, if planning a flash mob dance just isn’t your thing and you don’t want to add any additional costs to your reception just to spice up your entrance, one inexpensive way to make your reception entrance more your own is to run through a paper banner.
All it takes is some paper which you can decorate with your and your partner’s names, possibly your wedding date, and any other information you want. You may also want to use colors that match your wedding’s theme.
Then, you and your partner just run through it and it functions as a great symbol of your love for one another and the fact that you “made” it, and finished your race in some way.
Light your tent.
If your reception is going to be a tented event, one of the best ways to make your entrance into the space more memorable is to use a projector to create amazing light designs.
Whether it’s a Chinese wedding and you want flying dragons projected onto your reception space’s ceiling or you just want to create a fireworks display of lights as you and your partner enter, no one in attendance will forget it.
Now, when entertaining doing something like this for an entrance, you need to be sure that it aligns with your and your partner’s personalities and your wedding’s theme, style, etc.
Light your path.
Depending on the time of your celebration, your entrance may be taking place at night and, if that’s the case, you can get creative with how you light the way to up the epic factor.
The classic choice here is usually sparklers, which look amazing in pictures and can actually be manipulated to create shapes and letters. For some visual ideas, check out this post from Fstoppers.com, Sparkler Photos That Brides Will Love, but sparklers aren’t your only option.
Glow sticks are another means to light the way and also look great in photos, and then there are sky lanterns, which are essentially mini paper hot-air balloons. If you get your wedding party and/or other guests to let these go at the right moment, the results can be breathtaking.
Don’t underestimate the potential impact of your entrance.
There are so many more ways to make your wedding reception entrance more memorable. You and your partner could enter in costume or masks, or even in each other’s outfits, and you can never go wrong by simply doing a fun dance or by walking under the “tunnel of hands” create by your wedding party.
You can also have some confetti, flower petals, or even balloons dropped from above as you and your partner enter, but however you do it, the bottom line is that the effects that a little extra effort in this area will have on your wedding photos cannot be overstated.
Yes, there will be countless special moments throughout your reception, but you shouldn’t underestimate the potential power of your entrance. So, give it the time and thought it deserves and, of course, let your wedding photographers know of any entrance ideas you may have.

More Unique Engagement Photo Theme Ideas
There are so many ways reasons to take engagement photos leading up to your wedding day. They make for great save-the-dates, sign-in books and collages, gifts and table numbers, not to mention the chance they give you to get to know your wedding photographers.
So, the only question is, what should you do for your session. Just head to the location of your first date or your old high school? Or perhaps there’s a picturesque park nearby? The options are endless, and for some general tips, check out this post, Wedding Photography Tips: How to Make the Most out of Your Engagement Session.
Sometimes, though, a theme can be just the thing your engagement photos need, and we’ve worked on a lot of different themed shoots in our time in wedding photography in NY and NJ. So, we thought we’d pass on a few of the more unique theme ideas we’ve come across along the way.
Some New-Agey Options
While favorite sports, books, and movies have made for great engagement photo themes for a relatively long time now, there are some other popular choices that haven’t been nearly as popular as they are right now for too long.
So, if you and you are partner are huge video gamers, for example, then you may want to consider using some type of video game theme for your shoot. Whether you both dress as your favorite characters, go to a location reminiscent of the setting of your favorite game, or simply head to an arcade, it can make for some very original photos.
And while we mentioned movie themes above—and for more on that, check out this post, 6 Movie Theme Ideas for Your Engagement Photo Session—another more modern choice for an engagement shoot theme is the zombie attack.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be movie-inspired. Many of the modern couples who go this route like to set up a serene setting and then have a sequence showing the zombies making their way toward them until they have to flee, fight them off, etc.
And while still on the new-age note, more and more couples are choosing to cleverly factor social media platforms like Facebook into their photos by, for example, bringing prop signs with the “Like” icon which read, “Love,” instead.
Paint Your Pictures
How could heading outside or to a proper location and throwing paint all over each other not make for great photos? As longtime NY / NJ wedding photographers, trust us, it’s impossible.
So, one way to make your engagement photos way more unique is to take the paint-themed approach. Whether you use the wet stuff or you use colored powder, the results of a “paint war” can be absolutely breathtaking, and it’s not just the incredible array of colors either.
The act of throwing paint all over each other always leads to inherent laughs and memorable moments, which will only make for more unforgettable pictures and, like mentioned above, heading outdoors for these kinds of sessions if always a good idea, but you can also set up a wall to paint details like your wedding date on as well.
And while the individual photos will have no problem of standing out all on their own, the key is to make sure your photographers get some shots of you and your partner before the damage is done. The contrast will only make the pictures more impactful.
To get an idea for the incredible visual possibilities of these kinds of photos, check out this example from Green Wedding Shoes, An Engagement Session with Holi Powder.
Find Joy in the Simple Things
While a picturesque park or beach, the bright lights of a city at night, or a farm at dusk will all absolutely lead to some spectacular photos, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to achieve incredible photos in a simpler setting.
For instance, a making-breakfast theme is becoming a fairly popular choice, and you can do it right in your own kitchen. You can have your photographers come over on a Saturday and take the pictures while you’re both still in your pajamas!
You can take a similar approach with a baking-a-cake theme, or you can switch it up a bit and head to you and your partner’s favorite pub and do your session right at the bar, or maybe there’s a little coffee house nearby that would make for the perfect setting.
The point is, sometimes the simpler themes are the ones that allow the personalities of the newlyweds-to-be to shine brightest, and on top of that, if you and/or your partner are worried about being on camera, you’ll be a whole lot more comfortable in a familiar setting.
It’s all about you and your partner.
Those aren’t nearly your only options as far as possible engagement photo themes. The list goes on and on, and for some more creative ideas, check out this post Creative Theme Ideas for Your Engagement Photo Session.
Just remember that, no matter which theme you’re thinking of building your engagement session around, it needs to connect with you and your partner.
You don’t want to go with a really popular movie or trending theme just to jump on the bandwagon, because you’ll be the one who has to live with the resulting photos for the rest of your life.
So, when trying to decide on a theme, always ask yourself if it speaks to your and your partner’s personalities, styles, and story before making any decisions.

Wedding Photo Ideas for Capturing Your Rings in All Their Glory
Wedding rings have served as a way of couples signifying their love for one another for a long time. To find out where that and a few of the other well-known wedding traditions came from, check out this post, The Unbelievable Origins of Some of the Most Common Wedding Traditions.
But today’s post isn’t about where the wedding ring tradition came from but how you should go about capturing your bling, because make no mistake, whether it’s your engagement ring or your and your partner’s wedding bands, they deserve their moment in the sun, or more appropriately, in your photo album.
And as longtime NY / NJ wedding photographers, we’ve captured many wedding rings in a variety of styles, so read on for a few tips we’ve picked up along the way for ensuring that your rings get the attention they deserve, both on your wedding day and in your wedding photos.
Up Close and Personal
You’ll have plenty of opportunities, both on your wedding day and after it, to capture your wedding rings on the hands of you and your partner, which is why you should have them captured alone, in all their glory, whether it’s on a table, a stark backdrop, etc.
Make sure your wedding photographers get a few close-ups without any other details or distractions. Leaving the background out of focus may help. Also, you should have them photographed individually as well as together, and you can layer them on top of one another to create some visual flair as well.
In the Box
It’s also a good idea to have your ring(s) captured inside the pillow boxes in which they came and, again, you may want your photographers to get up close for these shots.
The difference here is that the pillow box will be almost as central to the picture as the ring itself, which tends to evoke a vintage feel. So, if that’s the tone you’re going for in your wedding photos, then you don’t want to forget this one.
Paired with the Invitation
The rings are just a couple of the little details you won’t want to forget to capture for your wedding album, so why not take out two birds with one stone by photographing your rings on top of your wedding invitation.
That way, both will get a chance to shine together and, on top of that, if you or your photographers can find a way to strategically place the rings on certain areas of the invitation to emphasize certain words or information, it can end up being a very interesting picture.
The Moment of Truth
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to capture the rings in all their glory, but there’s nothing like capturing the moment that they’re being put on the newlyweds during the actual ceremony.
Even if you can barely make out the rings, the action within the photo will say everything, and you won’t just want close-ups during these moments. Make sure your wedding photographers are prepared to capture the entire scene that surrounds the action as well.
Rings and Hands
Once you and your partner have placed your rings on one another, it’s always a good idea to have plenty of photos taken of your and your partner’s hands along with the new additions to them.
Whether you hold hands, hold your rings in your palms, or rest your hand(s) on your partner’s hand(s), shoulder, or chest, take it from us as a wedding photography company in NY and NJ that’s been in the business for a while, you’ll want at least a few photos of your rings along with your hands to contrast with those of your rings all alone.
Rings and Roses
Just as the ring(s) can be paired with the invitations to create some interesting photos, the rings will also work well when photographed with other details, like the bouquets.
Think about it, most brides want a picture or two of them holding their bouquet, so why not use that as another opportunity to work your ring into your photos? And your photographers can also play around with the focus, sometimes putting it on the bouquet, and other times on the ring(s).
For some tips on ensuring that all the little details of your wedding are captured and preserved the way you want them to be, check out this post, 4 Wedding Photography Tips for Capturing All the Little Details.
Below the Neck
While getting a few close-ups, even extreme close-ups, is a good idea since that will ensure that your wedding rings are the center of focus in at least a few wedding photos, you should also have your photographers take a few shots from the neck or shoulders down.
That way, the rings will still get the attention they deserve since they won’t have your and your partner’s faces and expressions to compete with, but the picture itself will offer a different view of them.
Some other ideas…
From there, there are plenty of ways to have your ring(s) photographed that may not be considered must-haves by all. For instance, you’ll want some candid shots in which the rings are featured if not the focal point.
You may also want to consider placing your rings on the cover or on a meaningful page of a book, or on a particular Bible passage. If you take that approach, you can even tuck two pages down into the center to create a heart shape in which the rings can be placed.
Some other options are to get your hand/ring captured next to your mother’s, grandmother’s, etc., or to stage ring portraits with other details and trinkets like cake-toppers, high-heels, parts of the decor, etc. For some more visual ideas, check out this post from the GoodEyeBlog, 70 CREATIVE WEDDING RING PHOTOS.
Your wedding rings are too valuable not to be featured prominently and beautifully in your photo album.
For some general must-have wedding photo ideas, check out these posts, The Major Must-Have Wedding Photos: Part 1 and Part 2, but the bottom line is that there are plenty of must-haves among your wedding ring pictures alone. And forget their financial value, your wedding rings are too valuable as a symbol of your and your partner’s love not to have captured in the fashion they deserve.
So, we hope these ideas get you pointed in the right direction and, as always, if you have any additional wedding ring photo ideas, be sure to discuss them with your photographers as early on in your planning as possible so that they can start preparing.

5 Wedding Customs from Around the World You May Want to Adopt for Your Celebration
Whether you and your partner choose to have a traditional wedding or you decide to take a more original approach, there are still so many customs to consider. From the giving away of the bride to the throwing of the bouquet, the list goes on and on, and to find out where some of these well-known customs came from, check out this post, The Unbelievable Origins of Some of the Most Common Wedding Traditions,
But take it from us, we’ve worked with all kinds of couples in our time in NY / NJ wedding photography and videography, and America didn’t create the first wedding traditions, by any means. Each culture and part of the world has its own particular customs, and who says you can’t adopt them for your own celebration?
So, we gathered together some of the more interesting and/or surprising wedding customs from around the world. That way, if you see anything you like, you can start folding it into your plans.
Changing of the Clothes
In some parts of the worls, such as Japan, China, and Morocco, for instance, it’s customary for brides to wear more than just the one outfit on their wedding day.
From one switch between the ceremony and reception to as many as seven wardrobe changes, this custom varies depending on the culture, but the point is, for some brides in certain parts of the world, it’s wedding dresses, not wedding dress.
And this is one custom that’s already made its way west, as more and more American brides are choosing to pick out and prepare two outfits for their wedding days, one for their ceremony and one for their reception.
The good news is, if you take this approach, you can switch to a reception dress that better fits your celebration’s theme or simply a more comfortable one than the dress you wore for your ceremony.
Mendhi (Henna)
Mendhi, or henna, is a paste that is commonly applied as a temporary form of skin decoration in India and Pakistan. It started as a ceremonial art in the ancient Indian subcontinent and became popular in America not long ago, where it was known simply as henna tattoo art.
While typically applied to brides, mendhi can be applied to both men and women alike and is usually applied to the hands, feet, and, sometimes, the backs of the shoulders of women and to the arms, legs, backs, and chests of men.
The tradition varies in different parts of the world, but in the Hindu tradition, it’s usually performed on the eve of or a few days prior to the wedding. Whether it’s a professional artist or a skilled relative who does it, the designs tend to be very intricate and if the look is something you think would be a good fit for your celebration, feel free to make the tradition your own.
As longtime NY and NJ wedding photographers and videographers, we can tell you that it tends to make for a beautiful addition to your wedding photos and video(s). For some examples, check out this post from StyleCraze.com, 20 Outstanding Bridal Mehendi Designs For Your Wedding Day.
Letting the Little Ones Have Bigger Parts
In America, it’s fairly common for brides and grooms to choose their little siblings, cousins, etc., to be their flower girls and ring bearers. They just add an inherent cute factor to any wedding celebration they’re a part of.
However, if that’s the case, then why not give them a bigger role, as our British friends do across the pond, where there tend to be a lot more mini members of bridal parties?
Here, it’s far more common for the bridesmaids to consist of people relatively close in age to the bride, perhaps with the addition of an older family member or two, but that doesn’t mean it has to be that way.
So, if you’re particularly close with your little sister or cousin or you’re just trying to up the cuteness level in your celebration, don’t be afraid to go against the grain and make the mini members of your wedding a bigger part of the affair.
Working Together
What is marriage but an agreement to work together to find and maintain happiness? So, why not do like the Germans and start seeing how you work together right then and there on your wedding day?
According to an old German tradition, the newlyweds head outside after their ceremony where they must work together to saw a large log in half to symbolize their ability to work and accomplish feats as a pair.
Another German tradition calls for a plate to be broken at the bride’s and groom’s feet, which they must then pick up, piece by piece, together, again symbolizing their ability to work together and overcome challenges as one.
These kinds of customs may not seem as fun as some of the others at first glance, but they’ve been practiced in certain parts of the world for a very long time for a reason. So, if you and your partner are looking for ways to showcase your strength as a couple, maybe these traditions are for you.
Pulling the Strings
While the old flower bouquet toss is always a good way of getting the single ladies involved and of seeing whose wedding day will be celebrated next, it’s not the only way. In Peruvian wedding celebrations, the cake itself is part of this custom.
Ribbons attached to charms are inserted in between its layers, one of them with a fake wedding ring attached to it. Then, the single ladies come up, grab a ribbon, and pull. Whoever pulls the ribbon with the fake wedding ring attached to it will be the next to be married.
It’s essentially the same custom as the throwing of the bouquet, but if you and/or your partner are looking for ways to put a little twist on the traditional wedding celebration, this may be a good choice.
For more information on some of the world’s other interesting wedding customs, check out this post from BuzzFeed, 21 Extraordinary Wedding Traditions From Around The Globe, but the bottom line is, it doesn’t matter where they originated from. If you like them, feel free to use them in your own wedding, your own way.
