One of the big problems with just dismissing the legacies of your ancestors, and why this post offers really solid alternatives, is because those things often affect us today. My family on one side were white Southerns. They didn’t own slaves, but that financially benefited from slavery and that financial benefit helped my family be in good shape as they raised me. My parents received benefit of the doubt in college and high school because they were white, white privilege helped them get degrees and have successful careers that I benefit from. If your ancestors had slaves that financial benefit generally comes down to you through inheritance. If you are white in the US your family success was probably made that much more possible from white privilege. If you benefit from the historical oppression of others the least you can do is honestly acknowledge it. We can’t change the past, but until we honestly acknowledge it how can we shape the future to be better?
