It had been easy—too easy. He and his spouse were ragged and fettered, the joy that came with the birth of their second child shrinking in the face of a bottomless divide that had wedged between them. It was inescapable and dark, and though he tried to reach for her, she was absent. If asked what had been the first blow to create the canyon that pulled them apart, Oscar would not have had an answer. It was a multitude of things, he supposed, but most of all it was probably the way he behaved with other women.
He’d never once stepped over the line, until Olivia. With a recently broken heart, his friend was nothing if not vulnerable, and Oscar, for his part… he was drowning in that deep blackness, desperate to feel something. It didn’t excuse it, of course, but it made slipping the wedding ring off his finger just a little easier.
What should have been a one-time incident was anything but, and even as his marriage crumbled around him, Oscar was incapable of stopping himself. It was the first truly villainous role of his life, and while embracing it was an impossibility, ignoring it had become something of a talent of his. So that’s what he did—ignore the inevitable until the paperwork sat atop his kitchen table, awaiting his signature.
Fuck it, he thought, why should this be the reason I straighten up my game? It would be a waste, wouldn’t it? So he didn’t, and now here he sat beside Olivia—in Paris of all places—fingers dancing over her shoulder as a sly little smirk curled the corners of his lips. Some small part of him thought he should feel guilty, but he couldn’t force the appropriate emotion to surface if he wanted, finding that he would much rather bask in his friend’s delightful company.
Dinner and sight-seeing, they’d agreed. Dinner was done, and he had plenty to see right here on this outdoor patio, perched on the cushioned bench beside him, smiling at the dumb joke he’d cracked.

she wasn’t sure how things between her and Jason got so bad. she thought that having the kids would make everything easier and better. but why would life be easier?
and to top it off, the two had separated. it wasn’t easy to example to the kids and it was much worse when the media found out. them trying to figure who was the cause and who was the victim.
but then there was Oscar. he was right there. right there to be there for her. at first it was just friendly, because that’s what he was. a friend. but soon, it became more than that. they kept saying, one last time. but it never became one last time.
so here they were, in paris sitting next to him. all alone. it was nice that way. no media or press following them around.
“to be fair, most of your jokes are bad. but that was quite good.”
she places a light kiss on his cheek.
