But like imagine how it starts out.
At the bar Mihawk knows that Usopp is spinning tall tales, but he tells them so well. So well that Mihawk is actually listening in and that's how he hears Luffy's name. Which in turn makes him ask Usopp to introduce Luffy to him (in his own way).
When Mihawk meets Luffy, he recognizes the straw hat. He begins to wonder. Is that really Shank's hat? Is this the kid that Shanks saved? The one he gave his arm for?
Surely not. Its just a coincidence.
Only to get confirmation from Shanks when Mihawk visits him. Luffy is indeed the kid that Shanks saved. The one he bet his arm on. And it makes Mihawk curious. Was Luffy really worth Shanks giving an arm up for?
Then there's Zoro. A young swordsman with a big dream and even bigger ambitions. He's much weaker than Mihawk, but still fought him. And although he lost, it was obvious to Mihawk that he has the makings of a swordsman. A true swordsman.
A fantastic story teller, a boy his rival bet his arm on, and a possible successor for the great Dracule Mihawk.
Its all too interesting for Mihawk to ignore.
Don't get him wrong, he tried to ignore it. But his curiosity gets the better of him, especially after he hears about how the Straw Hats beat Arlong and his crew. Now Mihawk has to see just how special the Straw Hats are with his own eyes.
Besides, its not like he has anything better to do.
So he goes to search for the Straw Hats. And once he finds them, he just trails after them. He just wants to see their adventures, not join in on them. After all, he just wants to study them. Nothing more, nothing less.
When they notice him, the Straw Hats are ready to rumble, only to be confused when Mihawk is just there, trailing after them. They don't really know what to think about it, but they have mixed thoughts about it.
Luffy doesn't care. Mihawk isn't gonna bother them, so there's no need to bother Mihawk.
Nami is worried about Zoro getting hurt again. What if the former bounty hunter tries to fight Mihawk again.
Usopp, like usual, is just panicking. Why is Mihawk following them? Are the marines after them? Did Luffy's grandpa try to sic Mihawk on them again? What the fuck is going on?
Zoro is watching Mihawk like a hawk. (Pun not intended.) He wants to fight him again, but knows better. Because as much as it pains him to admit it, he's not ready to take on Mihawk again. So he just glares at the older swordsman whenever he sees him.
Sanji is just confused. He wasn't there for the fight between Zoro and Mihawk, and he was barely there for the aftermath. So he really doesn't know what to make of Mihawk trailing after them.
Eventually the Straw Hats calm down. They get used to Mihawk trailing after them. He doesn't bother them, so they don't bother him. That is till they get attacked. The older swordsman doesn't do anything to help. He's just there in the background watching them. This annoys most of them. Except for Luffy. Luffy doesn't care. In fact, he prefers Mihawk staying out of the fight. He's not a member of Luffy's crew, so the rubber-man doesn't want him getting in the way of his and his crew's adventures.
Eventually they move on from that. They get used to Mihawk just staying in the background while they fight. That is till the commentary starts. At first it starts with Zoro. After all, he is a fellow swordsman (and possible successor). Then it slowly spreads to the rest of the Straw Hats.
At first its annoying, but just like how they got used to Mihawk being in the background, they eventually get used to the older swordsman's "back seat fighting".
Then Mihawk steps it up again when he starts coming on board. Which first started when Sanji made a tomato based dish for lunch. Mihawk could smell it wafting from the Going Merry. And with how much he likes tomatoes, he asks if he can have some. And of course Sanji lets him join them for lunch. This is Sanji we're talking about.
The lunch is, of course, tense. Everyone but Luffy keeps shooting Mihawk looks now and again, with Zoro just glaring at him. They all eat in silence. Only relaxing once Mihawk leaves after thanking them for the food.
The Strawhats think that its a one off thing. Only for it to happen again. And again. And again. And then it leads to Mihawk to just hanging around on the Going Merry.
It puts the Straw Hats, except Luffy (because its Luffy), on edge for a bit. Then they get used to it. They get used to Mihawk eating with them. They get used to him hanging out. And slowly, ever so slowly, Mihawk get attached to the Straw Hats, and the Straw Hats get attached to him.
Eventually he ends up becoming that one strange uncle. You know the one. The one with good fashion sense, who's some bigwig, who just randomly turns up now and again, and mostly sips wine while giving commentary whenever he visits.
