I know fanfiction is like this big joke and everything, but man, have I read some fics that have completely knocked the wind out of me. New York Times Best Sellers could NEVER.

I think that to some people, fan fiction might be a joke...especially the media at large where they use it as a punchline to show that a character is nerdy or whatever...

But it’s never been a joke to me. When I discovered that other people wrote stories for the media they loved, often improving on the actual canon, it was like discovering that there was a whole magical world that I could be a part of. I had always been so ashamed and afraid to share this part of myself, but there were other people out there...such talented, endlessly generous and kind people, who had this same passion for storytelling in a way that was fun and easily consumable

I don’t know exactly what I’m getting at but what do humans do better, and what brings us together more than storytelling? How could anyone call that a joke when it’s engraved so deeply in us? Why do certain people get to decide which writing and storytelling is “high art” and which writing is a joke?
