I love this cute jinmao interaction in 15 vol of the light novel. He was so sad that Maomao and the others were going out to eat noodles. But she felt bad for him and made an opportunity for the two of them to spend a bit more time together💜💚

my ratiorine fwb comic is done! i started this about a year ago and really wanted to challenge myself to illustrate a longer scene with these two, one where you could really see how deeply they care about each other but also their difficulties in putting those feelings into words.

i don't usually write much so i definitely went out of my comfort zone for this.. but i hope you all enjoy!

To me, those two pages are parallels of how those two care for each other.

On the first, Olruggio took note of what Qifrey would say, and knew what his dreams were. Above all, he wanted him to be happy.

On the second, Qifrey remembers how Olruggio would react every time he learned about his secret. Disbelief, anguish, acceptance, forgiveness.

It just touches me so deeply how much they take note of each other and how much they remember about each other.

Olruggio actually listened to Qifrey. To him, Qifrey wasn't the miserable little victim that Olruggio could save with his heroic kindness. Like to me it's kinda funny that it was learning that Qifrey is missing an eye that made Olruggio go like "OK we're gonna be friends now whether you like it or not!" as if he was actively searching for a miserable person around to use for a hero complex or whatever. But it wasn't that. Olruggio genuinely cared for him. When Qifrey tried to fight back against him removing his memories, Olruggio laid out what Qifrey's dreams were, because he had been listening. He knew him.

Qifrey could have added to his guilt by only remembering that Olruggio never ever worried about the whole situation and was always perfectly fine with it, but he wasn't! He would get upset, for himself. He would "bite back a few words". Allowing himself to remember that Olruggio would get upset could be an infinitesimal source of relief, because it showed that Olruggio has had full agency and choice in the situation, and Qifrey is less of a monster for dragging him into this. To Qifrey, Olruggio isn't the perfect sacrificial hero, it's his friend who knows him and chooses to forgive and support him while also being aware of his own self.

The way all of Qifrey's signature spells aren't just water, they're water formed into sculptures, flowers and creatures and creations. The way his most signature spell, the water dragon, is a spell he crafted for Beldaruit, a spell that does nothing at all. It just looks pretty. The way Agott is fascinated with the old creature glyphs, because they dont serve a purpose, they don't need to, they just make a spell more beautiful. How freeing she finds that idea, of not needing to be useful. Her sharing the glyphs with Coco and asking her to just make magic for herself. Olruggio burning himself out creating contraptions, and not finding drive again until he heads up on the roof and weaves creatures of light that do absolutely nothing.

"A gentler kind of magic" indeed. It's art. It's art all the way down.
