Not Their Fault

I dont blame them,

I tell myself as I look at people

who voted for a

homophobic, racist, rapist.

They were lied to,

I excuse as I see them yelling

in the streets about inequality

as if they know

what that means.

It's not their fault,

I say as my friends fear

for their lives

and our fragile trust in the system

breaks even more.

It was unavoidable,

I whisper as I watch my future burn

in the eyes of an old man

who signed my death certificate

on the day I was born.

It's too late,

I think as I stare out the window

of the school bus and wait to be told

it's okay

by people who know better.

My love language is just that-

a language all of it's own.

Its when I send you something funny,

When its 3 am and I'm alone.

It's when I look into your eyes

And try to read your mind.

It's when I count your freckles

And kiss everyone I find.

Its when I know you think of me,

When your tired and stressed out.

It's when I know you're there for me,

Because that's what love's about.

It's when you know my order,

At our favourite takeout place.

It's when you know I'm sorry

And that I just need space.

It's when we walk down darkened streets,

As we stumble our way home.

It's when we call each other

And I hear your special ringtone.

It's when you compliment my hair

And tuck it just behind my ear.

Its when you hold me close

And say you'll always be here.

My love language is difficult,

It's hard to speak, that's true.

My love language is special though,
