Liz & the Lost Boys EP Release Show at JB's Aug. 29

Baroque-pop outfit Liz & the Lost Boys have been gaining some acclaim - thanks in part to the whimsical lyrics and lush harp chords of Liz Giavolino Ciavolino, with their music merging elements of folk with classical jazz. The group debuted their latest two-song EP As If/Explain this week, and will be celebrating its arrival with a performance at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. They’ll be joined by Maitland, who have recently released a new track themselves via Sofar Sounds and have also been jamming as part of gypsy-dance rockers King Tivoli. Keep an eye on this Philly band. Led by harpist/piano/velvety vocalist Liz Ciavolino, they make some sweet, neat cabaret rock — a little rootsy, a touch vaudevillian, very poised and dramatic. I hear hints of Regina Spektor in there too, when things start getting weird and wayward. Lovely, promising stuff.

"Baroque-pop group Liz and the Lost Boys have released a new EP, As If/Explain, on theirBandcamp today. The first song, “As If”, layers Lost Boys’ tried-and-true harp sections with jazzy piano chords and chastises a misguided foe, while the second, “Explain”, is a melodic, Regina Spektor-esque ode to the narrator’s emotional well-being. Frontwoman Liz Ciavolino brings energy to the lyrics with her vibrant tone and use of “talk-singing” to punctuate certain phrases – one of the many wonderfully innovative aspects of Liz and the Lost Boys. The EP release coincides this week with a performance by the Lost Boys with Maitland and Silvertonat Johnny Brenda’s on Friday at 8pm. Details here. "
