All the Colors of the Sun 

It is still not known why the Sun’s light is missing some colors. Here are all the visible colors of the Sun, produced by passing the Sun’s light through a prism-like device. The spectrum was created at the McMath-Pierce Solar Observatory and shows, first off, that although our white-appearing Sun emits light of nearly every color, it does indeed appear brightest in yellow-green light. The dark patches in the above spectrum arise from gas at or above the Sun’s surface absorbing sunlight emitted below. Since different types of gas absorb different colors of light, it is possible to determine what gasses compose the Sun. Helium, for example, was first discovered in 1870 on a solar spectrum and only later found here on Earth. Today, the majority of spectral absorption lines have been identified - but not all.

And, of course, I think this is very appropriate with all the pride celebration!

I found this strange baby on Mackinac Island. The first photo I took, it looks like he has fat rosy cheeks, and the second it looks like his beady little eyes are ready to pop out of his head. I love him. I even included his photos in my Mackinac Island Yelp review because he is so ridiculous and cute.

This is actually a brilliant idea, and as many health care professionals are looking at preventative medicine, this makes a lot of sense. (I’m assuming this Canadian study has relevance to other western nations, like the USA).

Also, it could help boost community, through things like organized walks (through neighborhood parks?). I could even see potential incentives for taking part, if it could help reduce the giant medical bills associated with poor physical health.

I’m still chewing on this, but it seems like it has massive potential. But it has to be done right. Telling everyone to just visit the nearest YM/WCA is not gonna be enough.

A bar has opened that doesn’t serve alcohol, and it’s surprisingly successful.

Brillig Dry Bar in Ann Arbor, Michigan doesn’t serve alcohol, but owner Nic Sims is counting on customers not caring.

She hasn’t had a drink in 20 years, and she wanted to create a space where people—including, but not limited to, recovering alcoholics—could gather to have fun and socialize without worrying about drinking. In other words, she wants Brillig Dry Bar to have “a bar-like convivial atmosphere, with snacks and drinks and conversation, without it being a bar,” she told MLive.com.

Sims runs the bar as a pop-up out of her husband’s coffee shop, Mighty Good Coffee. She serves interesting non-alcoholic drinks, like Brooklyn Egg Creams, Pomegranate-Rosemary Sodas, and Vegan Pumpkin Chillers, as well as snack plates with meats, cheeses, and cookies.

Though some detractors have accused Sims of being anti-alcohol, the bar’s opening night last Friday was packed. According to BuzzFeed, “Brillig’s first customers included former drinkers, pregnant women, Muslims, teenagers, and college kids.”

The next pop-up will be December 26.
