i usually don’t like it when people make “you guys did great” after their teams beat another team because it feels disengenuous and pandering. like it’s easy to praise the other team after you’ve beat them. But i also feel like it’s really important to say this.

The carolina hurricanes changed hockey this season. They found success by making hockey new and fun and taking the most stale sport in existence and making it bend to their will. They weren’t even supposed to make the playoffs this year by most peoples guess and they were like “okay if we aren’t going to be the best team in the league we’re going to be the most fun team in the league.” and they did. Some people didn’t like it, but a lot of people did. I know fans and the team want a stanley cup as they should. But as someone outside looking in, the canes did win. They won by bringing joy into a sport that sometimes feels completely devoid of it. They reminded us it really is a game, but that games can still be important. You don’t need superstars and you don’t need super serious old fashion men. Sometimes you can just have fun and the rewards are sweet but even the losses aren’t for nothing. 

so that’s my take and i hope it doesn’t come across as condescending or ridiculous. i just feel like the canes have made hockey better for all of us and deserve respect for that when all is said and done.
