Some extra concept art from when we were brainstorming! At first I wasn't sure whether I wanted to do a maid cafe or a butler cafe. Ultimately I went with butler, but I think maid Rumi is still super cute<3
I’m aware that in the movie we get a flashback of Rumi asking if she has patterns because of her father, to which Celine says yes — and they could fix them.
(And also that there’s art of him made by official artists of the movie).
But Celine is a very interesting character when it comes to those she cares about like Rumi, or Rumi’s mother.
She constantly denies Rumi’s demon side, insisting she always hide that part of herself from even her best friends in the whole world. And when Rumi’s patterns grew all over her, Celine could hardly touch her — let alone look at her — and still kept insisting they could fix it; that everything was fine; that Rumi wasn’t like them; that Rumi wasn’t a demon.
I think it’s safe to say she would be the same way when it comes to someone else important to her that she knew well — someone like Rumi’s mother.
Something that’s interesting to me is how Rumi’s father is never pictured, unlike her mother whom we have a face to attach to. And I get why ‘n all, between time constraints and demons being viewed as evil — why would they have a picture of him or have him in a flashback?
But what if it was because her father was never actually in the picture.
Gwi-Ma feeds on people’s shames to turn them into his slaves, and though it’s unlikely that a Hunter would ever experience that (given how much of an oddity Rumi is treated as, for example) there’s no saying that it’s particularly impossible for him to take advantage of a Hunter.
We don’t know enough about Rumi’s mother to know who she was, how she acted, or what her shames could be. But what if it was Rumi’s father’s fault?; and that’s why Celine calls him the demon.
What if her mother got pregnant and the father ran away from his responsibilities? No doubt a pregnancy without the father would be difficult, especially if they were in a relationship when it happened. All the thoughts that would’ve been going through her head… there was probably something — if not multiple things — that Gwi-Ma could latch onto.
She ignored him of course — she was a Hunter; she had to — but he was already in her head. She was bound to make a deal with him at some point.
And I think it would’ve been to save Rumi’s life.
I’m aware that babies can survive after a mother dies in childbirth in some circumstances, but there’s also a lot of cases where both perish. What if Rumi’s mother didn’t know if Rumi had a chance; or thought that she didn’t? She would’ve made a deal to save her.
She still ends up dying, but Rumi is alive; and she has the patterns that came with that death.
Celine could have known all of this, but Rumi’s mother was someone she deeply cared for. She was still a Hunter, even if Gwi-Ma somehow managed to get to her. It was never going to be her mother’s fault — not after all those tragedies; not in Celine’s eyes.
It was the fault of Rumi’s father. He started all of it. He was the bad person in this scenario. He was the demon.
Realized I rarely draw Mira with glasses despite wearing a glasses wearer myself 😭 Maybe it's my desire for perfect 20/20 vision subconsciously leaking thru LMAO

Summary:
Rumi knew she’d been standing on the sidewalk staring at the doorway long enough for it to be creepy, but she couldn’t help it.
It wasn’t that the doorway in question was itself daunting or anything; it was just a typical glass door, for a business that sat tucked away on a side street on the outskirts of Seoul. It was even sitting on the sunny side of the street as the day gently rolled over from morning to noontime, making the small chalkboard ‘welcome’ sign hanging inside it gleam all the brighter.
No, the part that was giving Rumi pause was what laid beyond the door. And the potential it had to change…everything.
Was she ready? Really ready?
…No.
Not really.
But she was also sick and tired of not being ready, so whatever she was now would just have to do.

Rumi walks into a tattoo parlor in Seoul wanting to cover up the scars she gave to herself and reclaim a bit of her life.
She winds up getting a lot more than she bargained for when she meets the two attractive women who run the place and decided they want a piece of her life as well.
no dude it's so cool how attached you are to that character who is singled out and ostracized due to the external monstrousness that clashes with their internal spark of humanity. and i love how drawn you are to themes of horror and love, nature versus nurture, otherness, isolation, and the abject. i bet you have normal feelings about your own personhood
We've had bodyswaps, but weve never seen Rumi's patterns follow her. Demon stuff ain't biological but what happens when she wakes up in Mira's body covered in patterns, when she covers herself exactly the same way she did in her own body and the other two are even more confused (if very releived) as to why upon realizing Rumi's body looks fine, no scars or any other signs. How badly would it fuck up Rumi to have proof they aren't only skin deep?
