I actually hate the trend of having all these romance novels with these cartoon characters on them. I can no longer tell from the cover if the book is a light hearted romance aimed at adults or at teens. I can no longer pick a book to gift to my underage cousin because who knows, I might accidentally gift her some hardcore kinky porn with bdsm and dubious consent because the cover makes it look like ice princess or Lizzie Maguire something. Not to mention I don't feel like reading something that looks like it should be in the bag of a teenager. It doesn't help that even the raunchy books are written in such a generic tween to young adult type of language but also there are no longer any blurbs at the back to tell me about the plot. It's just one young adult smut writer glazing another young adult smut writer with "extraordinary" or "made my toes curl" or "fascinating". Also fuck new york times, even a turd slapped on a page would be a NYT bestseller at this point.
I yearn for simpler times when looking for a romance novels wasn't a guessing game.
Men will ask you why women don't leave abusive partners and then blame women for divorce rates when they do.
Bsd fans will pride themselves on being media literate because their favorite characters are based on literary icons and then tell you unironically that Hirotsu lied to Chuuya that Dazai picked up Chuuya's drunk call when Dazai's SPEECH BUBBLES ARE LITERALLY ON PAGE.
And then they'll fight you on it as a valid interpretation when they are deliberately ignoring the very clearly visible evidence that Dazai picked up the call and answered.
Yes, Hirotsu lied, but NOT to Chuuya. He lied to Kaji to protect Dazai about pretending to answer because WE SEE Dazai's responding speech bubbles ON PAGE.
Being open to interpretation is a good perspective to have, however when you look at a box of chocolates that is clearly marked chocolate and tell everyone that there is no chocolate and only spinach in the box then you're just wrong.
Handong after destroying Deukae's reputation in one fell swoop because she didn't bother to use any of her braincells.
I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.
Hey OP, love your scalding take here; don't forget about commutes.
Once you factor in commute times (which even for short distances can be grotesquely inflated due to the fact that so many people are all commuting at the same time, but that's a different conversation) many people are actually devoting upwards of 10-12 hours a day on "work related tasks."
I am a sucker for big brown doe eyes. No wonder I like Dazai so much.
a character who truly, legitimately goes “but why does that matter?” about their feelings when someone who cares about them asks. and the sudden falling of everyone around them’s faces as they realize that this person doesn’t recognize themself as someone who needs or should be taken care of. i want Everyone to hurt. surprise at the idea, worry for them, horror at not having noticed. do you see this person who doesn’t think of themselves as a person?
At risk of sounding rude I really think edtwt should go back to their lane and stop harassing people who use the word "healthy" as a compliment. Not everyone is triggered by the idea of gaining weight and nobody should be expected to cater to your needs when you are in non edtwt spaces.
My only opinion on the green yuri discourse is that people need to let queer people enjoy "boring" slice of life stories. We like feel good stories where nothing really happens too.
So many skk fanfics have Chuuya be the one that openly shows affection while Dazai is emotionally constipated and while Dazai IS emotionally constipated have you seen them?? Dazai is out there giving Chuuya touching farewell speeches and Chuuya gets so embarrassed he shoots Dazai in the face. They're both so bad at showing care in ways that aren't actions but like Chuuya is EXTRA bad. The most physical affection he's given anyone is like, the fistbump he gave Dazai's shoulder that one time. You're telling me Chuuya is the one openly discussing feelings in this relationship?? Dazai will probably get two words in and Chuuya's already running for the hills. I can't imagine him even hugging people unless someone else initiates.
Bringing THIS post back because I have more to say. Want to apply this Attachment Theory (and be careful with and say that attachment theory is not a diagnosis or a set character trait but a description for a pattern of behavior) BUT-
I think if you look at their interactions especially in the first few years they've known each other Chuuya is Avoidant while Dazai is the DEFINITION of Disorganized.
Dazai knows Chuuya for like, a day, and yet throughout Fifteen he keeps ocilating between claiming to hate Chuuya and not want to be around him and yet finding every excuse to bother him, be around him, be close in some way. He ping pongs between being helpful and caring and being extremely antagonistic. Disorganized, or Fearful Avoidant people, see closeness as both safety and danger, hence why a pattern of affection and rejection the next moment is so common. We see in in the manga, too. Dazai's first mission after four years with Chuuya involved him antagonizing him one moment and showing affection the next. Dazai pretending he's dying so he could see Chuuya still cared about him. Dazai calling Chuuya "partner" after Corruption was over and then leaving him on the ground?? But weirdly folding his clothes for him? Definition of mixed signals common with Disorganized attachment. Dazai needs to feel close to someone but then needs to push them away the next moment, in order to feel safe.
Chuuya as an Avoidant is pretty self-explanatory, he cares deeply about the people around him, but also is incredibly uncomfortable with vulnerability and emotional intimacy. You COULD argue that Chuuya might also be Disorganized, after all, why would he be calling Dazai randomly to rant at him while drunk, or be so attached to people, but like. Avoidant people are not lacking in wanting companionship and intimacy, they just don't feel safe being too close too fast and need to maintain their boundaries. Honestly, Chuuya's most problematic Avoidant traits were a huge part of why the Sheep felt like they couldn't trust him and betrayed him: Chuuya didn't tell anyone shit about himself, partly as a source of responsibility and partly because he didn't feel safe too. His lack of explanation on why he was working with the Mafia, or even explicitly stating that the case mattered to him emotionally in some way, any expression of vulnerability and trust would have made his actions a lot more sympathetic and not confusing like they were for his friends. Chuuya's default mode toward anyone, even people he likes, is anger, because it keeps others at a distance and makes him feel safe. It takes a LOT for him to open up and admit to certain things, and he always prefers actions over words or emotional revelations.
And these two paired together? A mess but they also kind of get one another. They both need to pretend to dislike each other in order to keep a distance they feel safe with. Dazai's actions are seen as confusing and frustrating to Chuuya but he also kind of rolls with it most of the time. Like the random acts of vulnerability and affection paired with the classic "haha it was a joke" excuse angers him, but it's also familiar.
Go forth and write those fanfics, guys. Spread the canon agenda.
The miraculous author discourse is only making me like the author more and more. Bro just doesn't give a fuck.
I can't get over how we know absolutely nothing about Tom and Zendaya's wedding and we only heard that Zendaya's dress was gorgeous from a guest. Meanwhile Taylor and Travis' wedding keeps getting such loser ass gaudy details revealed by media sites every half hour. Like, I thought her fans were insistent she wanted it to be private.
Irene's album is so good.
People shocked Siyeon showed up with those fuckass extensions like she didn't show up for their first ever performance at a festival with a flouncy little pony on top of her head and jorts with pseudo converse stitched onto them.
Okay so people realize that just because he's a footballer he doesn't actually have rocks for brains right? Whether you despise her or love her too much or genuinely believe she's secretly a lesbian using him as a beard or that she's stuck in some evil contract you realize he's the one with the college education, right? Like, you should be able to hold people accountable for their bullshit without making up stupid shit cause the switch up in the narrative surrounding this man's intelligence ever since she started dating him is crazy.
