for someone who likes hotd as a general rule and understands f&b is too complicated to be adapted verbatim for tv, i have to say the punishment for alicent through sexual assault is getting too much. that jasper wylde scene could have been avoided and nothing would have changed.

like, the most compelling ships for me always stem out of one thing: the characters have a profound, ongoing effect on each other’s senses of selves. when they are apart, the characters’ actions are still affected by each other. the way they approach the world changes because of the other.
which is this deeply Austenian view of ideal romantic relationships as mechanisms by which we come to know ourselves better and become better versions of ourselves. good romance, for me, is always tied in with a sense of self-actualization, and the way in which a beloved partner allows a person to know themselves better.
Tumblr really, really can look at female characters from a doylist prespective. It can't analyze them and love them as characters that are either badly written or good written and not as people who have to meet some morals standard they want people in their life to meet.
I know a popolar post on here said the opposite, but this post was mostly talking about secondary character.
Honestly, I speak as someone who have wrote around 8k about secondary women characters in the last six months, I will care about how many people dgaf about background or underveloped female character only after I will stop be annoyed by the fact that the same people can't decide to like or dislike a female main character only based on "she is a good person" or "she isn't a good person", "is she someone i'd get along in real life" or "i would hate her in life." When at the same time stanning male characters who would be absolutely despicable people in real life. (Which I don't blame them for- I also like characters who would be despicable. But I think there is a problem if you don't feature morality in your choice to like or not male characters but do it with female characters.)

sometimes you stumble across a blog that's perfectly preserved from 2014 and you feel your soul leave your body a little bit thinking about how the internet used to be fun.
no! explanation of the gaps will kill Reader! she needs narrative lacunae to enjoy the story!
everything so scary & forever .
people, both in fandom and in general, would have a much better time if they admitted all of their opinions are deeply shaped by personal experiences and who they fundamentally are instead of trying to attribute everything to either moral or intellectual superiority. but you guys aren't ready for that conversation. the actual way to get close to the truth is to listen to the world and take little bits and pieces of everything you encounter and then incorporate that into your own unfiltered responses. you have to listen without being a blind follower while doing your best to preserve your individuality. that is all.

goddd literally the characters in mbf are Too Real to me ... like. sure there are other, non-mbf characters who feel extremely real to me (in the sense that i feel connected and close to them in a deeply personal way, the traditional reader-character lines blur such that i feel they are imposing themselves on me). but none like elena & lila & literally any character in mbf!! like when i say i am missing antonio this morning i truly mean it. it's not that i am wishing i had more content of him or whatever which is USUALLY what i mean, it's that i am feeling distraught over the absence of my real good friend antonio cappuccio and i want to know how he's doing. elena ferrante has this power.
grrm: the northern duke and a father of six gets beheaded because he showed no signs of even a room temperature iq was too honourable for this evil world, especially when he told cersei that he'll do nothing to prevent robert hounding her and her children.
grrm: every good character will mourn his death, try to avenge it and plot to restore his children to power because he was oh so very nice and his family ruled for 8000 years.
grrm: elia dies in a horrific and gruesome way with no narrative consequences. her children also die horrific deaths. outside of barely being a character she was a perfectly nice woman.
grrm: what are you, stupid? revenge is very bad! see, i've made a lover of a character who got brutally killed in a similar fashion three seconds ago say so! revenge is bad! revenge is only good when white pseudoceltic paganboos do it!
