Day 5: Grey to Frances (20k) My most frustrating day to date. It was my dads bday and a bit of a rough one out there. 20k or so again. Hips hurting, adjusting pack helped a bit. Long days can be frustrating, I was really hungry today! I hope I feel sated for tomorrow. This is our second to last night on trails. Hot shower and nice clean stocked baños. Up and down hill made for extra steps but bottle of wine helped make it through. Maybe the repeat trail had me exhausted. New friends Luke at Frances (that stupid hill and poor signage. The platforms are cool but no rope!! Tent almost blew away the second I said something!) Brian at Grey, Stephanie at PG. Good people. Really tired today. Warm today tho. That will be a nice change....and then.... Rain storm was a bitch and had to figure out how to tie down rain fly without rope- took stick and twisted under platform after looping the strings through. Mel took the brunt of rain and woke with a pretty wet sleeping bag the next morning. It could have been way worse for sure. Glad for quick thinking and camping skills to save tent and night. (at Torres Del Paine National Park)
Day 2: Hike to French Valley and Britanico lookout/camp at Paine Grande Slow start as we figured out cooking/cleaning/camp breakdown and most importantly, how to get Mel's sleeping bag put away. On the trail by 0915 up to French Valley. Breathtaking views and relatively easy uphill climb. Return to Paine Grande for first hot shower and dinner and off to bed after capturing a marvelous shot from our tent around 9:30p, sated and slightly sleepy from wine at dinner. Escaped ferocious winds for the time being... #womenwhohike #optoutside #rei #halfdometent #hikersofinstagram #adventurebabes #torresdelpaine #frenchvalley #chile (at Torres del Paine)
After months of prep and planning, frustration and elation, fear and excitement, the day is finally here. @mspitzer04 and I will be off trekking through the Andes for 1 week with only the packs on our backs to sustain us. Dehydrated dinners, fresh glacial water, an REI tent and lots of layers to face the elements: it's go time! A huge shout out to Cristobal at @erratic_rock for your amazing 3 o'clock Talk. You are truly fabulous! We are more than ready 🙌🏾🙏🏼💛✨💙🌀📿👍🏾 Will post pics when we return #travelbuddies #adventurebabes #erraticrock #patagonia #torresdelpaine (at Puerto Natales, Chile)
Having been an urban dweller for so long, even as a traveller, I had no idea I'd fall so quickly for beach life 💙This is my back yard for the next three months. I'm loving the vibes and laid-back style here. I think I'll kick off my weekend with some waves 🌊 #gypsynurse #thattravellife #travelnurse #lovemylife #pacificbeach #sandiego #beachbabe #beachbummin #blessed (at South Pacific Beach, San Diego, California)
Clean sneaks! I rarely read women’s print magazines anymore as it is rare that one has pages of content that seem relevant to me, however, I found myself purchasing one for my recent trip to Cuba. I did find an interesting editorial about white sneakers and how to keep them clean. It was recommended to purchase some specialty sneaker cleaner to “keep your shoes white”. While I reflected on how ridiculously obsessed I am about keeping my shoes clean in general, I also thought how silly it would be to spend $15-20 for shoe cleaner.
I offer you an alternative! A magic eraser! I have almost fully made the switch to safe and natural cleaning products so vinegar and baking soda are staples in my cabinet at all times. It’s only been recently that I have added the wonder that is the magic eraser.
Wow!! What a difference! I use these things to clean everything and use them until they fall to bits. As evidenced above, these shoes look darn good. They have been on many an urban hike as well as concerts, so I’d say that it works quite well and is so quick and easy! I’m so glad I saved that $20 on cleaner!
How to travel solo in Cuba 🇨🇺 What an adventure! I am still soaking up the good vibes from my most recent solo trip and I have to say, it was one of the best. I learned a lot about the beautiful people of the country and enjoyed chatting with the locals and practicing my Spanish. Some of my best tips I will share here! 1) Take cash. Probably more than you think you’ll need, especially if you are traveling from the USA. Credit cards and ATM’s DO NOT WORK, so if you plan on staying in the casas, you will be paying cash per night. It is anywhere between 25-30 CUC (pronounced “kook”) no matter is you are single or triple. You may want to consider sharing a casa particular with people to reduce costs. This price usually does not include breakfast, which is usually 5 CUC.
There is quite a large surcharge for changing USD and similarly Canadian dollars (it was slightly better to change USD at .87 vs Canadian at .71) so bear that in mind. You will loose more money than you think with those rates, therefore, take a bit more. Euros had a better rate but cost more on the front end to purchase. Either way, take cash. It is quite safe to keep and carry it and I would rather have more than not enough. I don’t think anything is worse than being in a foreign country without the ability to have cash. 2) How to carry all that cash? First of all, I felt more safe walking around Havana and Trinidad than I do in Los Angeles or Chicago at times. Obviously, don’t flash tons of cash or wear gobs of jewelry and you’ll be fine. I used a FlipBelt when I was on the move to keep cash and passport safe. This thing is amazing! I purchased it as an accessory for running to keep my phone and keys and it turns out that it is a fantastic money belt, as well! It wicks sweat, lays flat under your clothes and is easily accessible. You can even add on a wallet if you desire! Check it out here. Highly recommended. https://flipbelt.com/ 3) Soap is of limited supply, so bring a small bar or grab from your hotel (if you stay there). Also, hand sanitizer, portable wipes and other hygiene essentials are a good idea. If you don’t use them, pass them along! 4) That being said, consider giving your leftover toothpaste, soap and things to the locals. Not only is this a nice gesture, but it helps reduce waste and that is always a plus. A woman I travelled with brought some small candies to hand out to children. It’s always a wonderful thing to make people smile by extending a small gift. It does make you feel fuzzy inside.
