idk, what is wrong with me? i’m in a healthy and stable relationship with a great partner, i’ve had lots of therapy that has helped me establish strong boundaries and recognize red flags, and i have an active social life and fulfilling career. could it be that i just… like to read books and watch movies and tv shows about dysfunctional people??? you tell me, tumblr user girlcreator!

And also, I mean, life is hard and people hurt each other, and so people are going to create art about those experiences? And maybe some people are going to want to look at/read/watch/listen to/otherwise experience that art?

I mean, here is some meta discourse, but also, it seems like, a lot of the people who are very anti- toxic relationships in fiction are young enough that they can’t possibly have been in an adult relationship that was toxic, and also fully recovered from it (just, like, if you’re 16, chronologically you can’t have had an adult relationship, please don’t @ me on this one). And I find it a little difficult to have to argue about the politics of consuming unhealthy relationships with people who can’t understand what it means to survive or perpetrate toxicity in a relationship… Not that young people don’t have intelligent opinions, or things to offer, but there are things about my relationship with those fictions it feels impossible to explain to them.
