Actually what I'm saying is the public defenders are mostly insane and we should consider that not dealing with their obvious disregard for what their real job is (ensuring the trial is fair) in favor of "get the accused off no matter what" is a threat to the public good.

The "I support women's wrongs" crowd usually likes their female violence to be over-the-top vigilante power fantasy stuff enacted against targets that the audience hates or finds insufferable. They want "wrongs" that are technically wrong but secretly based.

Jax's wrongs are predominantly run of the mill bullying and emotional/physical abuse directed at vulnerable, insecure individuals. It's not a satisfying power fantasy, because Gangle and Ribbit are not targets that the audience wants to see get hurt. I suspect that if Jax were a cis woman who did the exact same things, people would still be reluctant to voice support for her actions.

Like, Jax has plenty of fans. She's still one of the most popular characters on the show and still has boatloads of apologists. But her fans aren't the "women's wrongs" crowd because Jax's wrongs aren't cool. Her fans mostly just want to draw her in cute outfits and talk about how traumatized she is.

When was Jax a woman? Not even the real person Jax was copied from transitioned, IIRC. Is it somewhere completely outside the text, because that doesn't count, and the people you talk about probably don't see Jax as a woman at all.

Gooseworx has confirmed that Jax was written as a closeted/repressed trans woman and indicated that Leeroy (the real life counterpart) is in the early stages of transition but still presenting as male ("boymoding"). The final episode offered some hints, though it was still pretty ambiguous.

So yeah whether this is "canon" is debatable, it depends on whether you consider the creator's statements about the characters to be canon, and I'm sure there are plenty of casual viewers who aren't aware of it at all, but the segment of the tadc fandom I've been exposed to and the place where most of the in-depth discourse about the show is happening has widely accepted and run with the whole "Jax is secretly a trans woman" thing. Even many of the people in the anti Jax tag use she/her pronouns.

I kind of have a problem with extra-textual statements being considered true within the story. I mean yeah there’s stuff like lore and info books and whatnot but if it’s that important to the story it should actually be in the story.

I know nothing about tadc, and do not want to know, but "my interpretation of the story is obviously true and anyone who disagrees just doesn't know how to read" is very funny to me because when it comes to settings I know well I generally think people who tell me this have entirely incorrect conclusions about the story.
