I love Lucy Carlyle so much.

She’s just so real. I love how she has real flaws and insecurities, it just makes her so much more relatable. I don’t know how Jonathan Stroud was able to perfectly portray the experience of being an insecure teenage girl, but he really nailed it. The way she reacted to Holly, the way she saw herself, the way she dressed, all of it was so relatable, at least to my experiences.

I really understand why she was jealous of Holly, in that situation I would have been jealous too. I understand her struggle with her appearance, how and why she chooses to dress down because she doesn’t feel comfortable dressing up. And it never feels like she’s just being “not like the other girls” it feels like she’s a real girl with real insecurities.

But my absolute favorite part about it is that her insecurities never define her, they’re just there and she’s accepted and she’s an amazing main character. I’m so sick of seeing girls in media being like “I’m so insecure uwu” but you just know that she’s actually gorgeous. Lucy never feels like that for me. Yeah, I think she’s prettier than how she views herself, I think everyone is. But I never imagine her as the unattainably pretty that most girls in media are, and she still gets the boy lmao.

She’s just so special to me and I love her.
