Mystic Messenger Starter Guide [Spoiler Free] Updated Sept. 2017!
So this is a starter guide if you’re planning to start playing Mystic Messenger and it’s spoiler free so you can read on without any worries. :) I know the game’s been out for months now but thought I should make my own guide since these are things I thought of while playing the game. I’ll add more as I continue playing.
A little bit about the game.
This otome game is played in the form of a series of chats with all 5 (now 7) characters. Each route duration is 11 days and each day has a series of chats that open up at certain times of the day. The first four days you get a chance to just talk to characters and getting to know them and based on your answers towards certain characters, on the 5th day you get put on the route of the character you favored in the 4 previous days. Remember, starting from the 5th day you must focus only on the character whose route you’re on. It’s easy to do so without upsetting the other characters as a lot of the answers are neutral. Remember that you CANNOT romance Jumin or 707 in casual story mode as they are the 2 character routes that you need to unlock. As V’s route is finally here as well, you’ll need to finish all the routes and secret endings before playing Another Story. The recommended play order of characters is Zen, Yoosung, Jumin, Jaehee, 707. Although Jumin is in deep story, I heard that his route has fewer spoilers than Jaehee’s so in order for the story to flow smoothly, that’s the best order. So make sure to save up on hourglasses.
Here’s how to know which answers are favored by which characters:
Zen = a grey heart will show on the screen
Yoosung = green heart
Jumin = purple heart
Jaehee = yellow heart
707 = red heart
In Another Story you can get hearts for V and Ray.
V = blue heart
Ray = dark pink heart
So that means that in casual story mode, you’ll need to collect either grey, green or yellow hearts while in deep story mode you’ll need to collect either red or purple hearts. Another story mode you need to collect blue hearts for a good end and dark pink ones if you’re aiming for the bad end.
There are also white hearts but so far, no one knows for sure who they belong to. Some say it’s a heart for all the members and others say it’s for Unknown.
Remember that really mean answers can break characters’ hearts which will actually be deducted from your total amount of hearts.
1. Play the game after midnight. Whether you’re playing for the first time or starting a new route, if you want to get ALL the chats on the first day just make sure to start playing a little bit after midnight. (This also applies to the Christmas and April Fools DLCs) It’s OK if you don’t play at midnight as the first day has the most chats. The first time I played I missed around 7 chats and managed to get 90% of the chats done that day. This was a glitch and it’s fixed now. Now all chats add up to 100%.
2. Save your hourglasses. Hourglasses are the main currency in the game which you can use to unlock character routes, call characters, open chat rooms for the next 24 hours, unlock secret endings, participate in missed chats and load saved games. I recommend saving them because you’ll need 80 hourglasses to unlock deep story mode, especially if you can’t afford buying any. There’s no point in unlocking chats for the next 24 hours as I just feel like it’s a waste of hourglasses. I managed to save more than 80 hourglasses playing only 2 routes in casual story so it should’t be a problem unlocking deep story mode.
Another Story costs 300 hourglasses to unlock so save up!
You gain hourglasses in chats, when the game updates, exchanging hearts for hourglasses and seeing information of guests you successfully invited to the party. 100 hearts equal to one hourglass.
3. Missing chats. It’s alright if you miss a few chats during the day. They won’t affect you getting the character’s good end. As other players mentioned, getting 50% or more than the chats done should be alright. Some other players said they got less than 50% and still got good ends. This can depend on how many chats they missed overall meaning that if you get a day with just 30% and the rest of the days are more than 50% you can still get the good end. Just make sure you gather hearts from the character you’re focusing on and attend as many chats as possible, especially the ones with the character whose route you’re on.
4. Getting as many chats as possible. Once a chat is missed you can’t play it except if you’re willing to pay 5 hourglasses (15 in Another story) which I don’t really recommend, unless it’s a really really important chat. However, the chat won’t close until the next chat opens, meaning if there’s a chat at 12 am and another one at 2 am then that means you can play the 12 am chat room anytime from 12 until 1:59 am. So you can do this with all chats which you think you’ll miss. If there’s a chat at 3 am then another one at 8 am then 10 am, you can play the 3 am chat then sleep and wake up at 9:55 am and play the 8 am chat AND the 10 am chat.
5. Save and load feature. Even though there’s an auto save feature, it’s best to save manually as sometimes the auto save doesn’t work properly (although so far, I haven’t experienced this). The safest way is to save after every 1 or 2 chats so if something happens to the auto save and need to load the game that you saved, you won’t miss any chats. Please remember the time factor is still considered when you save and load so if you save a game at 8 pm and you want to start from that same point again then you must load the game a bit after 8 pm. It has be after 8 pm even if it’s just by a few minutes because anytime before that, it’ll be like you’re trying to move forward in time which isn’t allowed in the game and you can get banned.
6. Bad, normal and good endings. It’s fairly easy getting both the normal and good ends without having to restart a route. Just make sure to NOT open the FINAL email from your guests which will count as 4th email you receive from them. On the 11th day just save your game before or after the 8 am chat but BEFORE attending the party. After saving your game, you can now open all your emails so they have a ‘Completed’ status and then attend the party. After you’re done, you can now go and load the game you just saved and attend the party straight away without opening any emails so no guests will come and you’ll get the normal end. The time factor here isn’t important because it’s the end of the game. I loaded the game at 2 pm (I saved at 8 am) and everything went smoothly.
Inviting guests to the party is also the bigger deciding factor on which end you get. If you invite 10 guests or more (15 in another story) you’ll get the good end. If it’s less than that you’ll get the normal end. Meaning that if you get all chats and everything is going OK with the character’s route you’re on but there are no guests then you’ll get the normal end. If you want bad ends without restarting the game you must save your game right after you get sorted into a route and don’t overwrite that slot, keep saving in a different slot. After you get the normal and good ends, you can load your 5th day game to start getting bad ends.
7. Make sure you have enough memory AND RAM. The game itself isn’t that big but it does need lots of RAM so it can operate smoothly. Make sure there aren’t any other apps running in the background and if there are any apps you don’t use just delete them.
So that’s all I can think of now. If I remember any more tips, I’ll add them. If you need chatroom, phone call times or walkthroughs please check this link. Feel free to ask any questions as long as there are no spoilers. ^^
