not to mention, speaking of bars, the makeshift one they're sat behind. she's feeling pretty grateful for that, too, just now.
"and anyway, of course you'd say that."
there's a couple of beats of silence before lana says ⸺ hesitant, but only as if she's unsure of the etiquette ⸺
"you could also do worse." she hopes, in fact, that @loisl4ne never has to try to do better, but she swallows the thought ⸺ and, anyway, she's pretty sure that's not in her future. she has been for years.
there's another long moment before she sets down her glass and adds, looking stricken in a way truly only lana can:
"they'll try to make a reality show about us. like wife swap but for idiots with death wishes."
“ as far as low bars go ⸺ ” lois takes a very deliberate pause, her smile simmering. “ oliver is far from it. ” there a knowing look behind her greenish eyes. as if whatever is going on between them is as obvious as clark and lois were to everyone else once upon a time ago.
“ i'd say this one is one for win column. ” fingers curl around her glass as she finishes her sentiment with a gulp of her drink. “ besides, considering my dating history, you could do worse coming from me . . . might actually be the nicest thing i've ever said. ”
before she knows it, lois lets out a laugh that escapes so candidly she nearly snorts into her drink. “ okay — first of all? wife swap for idiots with death wishes is the funniest thing you've said all night. maybe all year. ” saluting lana with a her glass. “ and now i'm mad because i know some executive in metropolis would greenlight it before the sentence left your mouth. ”

" putting words in people's mouths is not very star reporter of you. " she accuses with an arched brow, only a little satisfied that this is what she chose to make of her observation. " don't worry, lane – i usually go for jelly-filled. " & just when she thinks she can go back to drinking her scotch in peace, lois's motor mouth does it again, drawing an annoyed eyeroll from her. the bubble's burst, alright. " yeah, well, you can't help yourself, can you ? " there's a touch more bitterness there, her drink fully downed before she signals for a refill. " look, journalism messiah, some of us will take whatever we can get – today it's a bar of college kids drunk off their asses, tomorrow it's the whole city. it's a marathon, not a race. " ugh... barf. but if she doesn't put a positive spin on it, she will literally start a bar fight. & agonizing about her streak of embarrassments in front of lois lane isn't an option. not a good one, at least. " i don't take lessons from chicks prancing around on their high horses, but thanks. " a beat. " & seriously, fire that make-up artist. "
of course she doesn't take any offense to the accusations or the pompousness⸺ because lois lane doesn't identify with any of it. the reporter is confident and sure of her craft . . . something that doesn't read as clearly for the woman to her left. so, it resonates with her, at least, just enough to falter the wide grin into a less obnoxious curl. “ i covered a cat fancy show, for the sake of journalism — so i get grasping at straws. ” perhaps better than anyone . . . but she leaves that out. instead, lois takes a gulp of her drink, like finishing is another competition ⸺ sue her, competitiveness is a tough habit to break. “ you know, maybe you'd ought to watch the video and just drink to it. might help you shake off all that embarrassment. it's a job and you did it. so what? ”
"Both things can be true at once." He lowers his voice to a whisper. "And I saw that blush. My vision is very good, you know."
denial is her best friend at the moment, and she doesn't miss out the chance to use it. head shakes with a clear no way⸺ lois lane blushing? hard pass. “ as if, smallville. ” yet, there's a crack in the demeanor . . . and she grins. “ you know the only thing saving you right now is that i unfortunately love you, farmboy. ” the love sick reporter drags it out like it's the world's hardest thing— when in fact, loving clark kent is the easiest thing she's ever done. “ besides, the only ridiculous thing were those lost puppy dog eyes you were sporting . . . and let's not forget the tie. ”

actually losing my mind about a court day i have on wednesday. i need these tickets to be dismissed so badly. i'm so nervous. i might pull a jess day and scream: "guilty, your honor" accidentally ):

clark has experienced many deadline crunches just like this, knows exactly what it takes to get the whole floor scrambling like the whole joint's been set on fire; admittedly, it's significantly easy for him to be able to observe these things because he uses his speed to cheat his way through the stress of cut-offs by being able to type extremely fast. among his observations, however, he doesn't usually find lois amidst the fray; she's the one that typically has herself taken care of long before anyone else realizes they've fallen behind. her fingers are flying across her keyboard at an alarming pace, and clark makes a quick beeline to her desk to assess the situation. ❛ lo... ❜ he greets her as he steps behind her chair, but she doesn't seem to have heard him at all. either that, or she's intentionally ignoring him.
one of her hands vacates the keyboard to grab her mug. as she raises it to her lips, he reaches over and puts his palm over the rim to gently nudge it down away from her mouth. his face wears his concern well, the line splitting it pulled down into a slight frown. if looks could kill, he'd be dead ten times over; her stare burns into him from below as she looks up at him. ❛ if something's bothering you, you know you can run it by me, right ? ❜

for the better half of the day, the intrepid reporter has been rifling through endless stacks of papers. it's hard to tell where the files end and the desk starts. all the prints are raging about the innovative tech lexcorp is dropping in two days ⸺ but not lois lane. oh no. something about the whole thing smells fishy. one could easily blame it on her constant skepticism, but questioning motives is who she is . . . especially lex luthor's.
fingers smash into keyboard, fully immersed into the words on the screen. everything around blurs until she's met with a rude awakening. now her attention shifts from the computer and narrows into the towering and handsome man before her. “ okay . . . ” she pauses like she taking his words into consideration. “ i'm bothered by the farmboy who just put his hands ⸺ god knows where they've been, all up in my mug. ” lips pressed together forcing a smile that should come out fiery but quickly falters into something warmer. he's not to blame for her frustration, so she sighs. “ i'm on a tight deadline and i feel like i haven't cracked this egg yet. ”
