Zephine always had an awareness that her parents were not biological. Her mother and father confided in her ages ago that they heard a crash out on the plantation and found her as a baby in the horse stables. Swaddled in a bizarre dark fabric with pale gold trim. Growing up she became a lovely young woman and a strong hand of aid with their horses. The only setback was she was weak on bright sunny days, and didn’t like going outside, but on overcasts or later in the evening she was as vibrant as ever.
Her and her family never really had troubles, their closest neighbors were two miles down the road and further back beyond their pastures was thick dense forest. It was quiet, and routine, until one evening they received a call from their neighbor to turn on the television.
[We have received news this evening that the god of mischief and his invasion has successfully taken over New York city as of 10:30 am this morning. We have in-tell that he will have ambitions to continue outside and some nearby counties have observed alien aircraft and figures in their communities. The president has arranged to make a public speech tomorrow afternoon, but in the mean time we advise that everyone stay within their homes and do not be outside after dark.]
This wasn’t good, already her mother and father looked worried. It was a restless night, and the next morning Zephine stepped out of her room to see her mom and dad loading up the truck.
“We are going to head into town to get some supplies, it’s a forty-five minute drive but we cannot really work with what we have.”
“Kale shouldn’t she come with us?” The mother asked.
“I can look after the home, we shouldn’t really leave the horses alone,” Zephine assured them.
The father seemed hesitant to agree, but she was right, the plantation couldn’t be vacant. “Just refresh the food and water in the stables. If the horses are restless because of the rain clouds let them out, but after that is done you stay in the house understand? You know where to find a gun just in case?”
“Yes sir, I’ll take care of it.” The young girl promised, and with a kiss on her forehead her mom and dad pulled out of the driveway and out onto the quiet road.
She did as she was requested, heading to the stables to feed the horses and let them out but as she did so she observed something odd. She had a splinter in her palm but the blood that seeped out was not...red. It was but it was also much darker, and it was floating, little droplets orbiting around her fingers. When she pulled the splinter out they vanished. It was unsettling, she didn’t know what to do or how to explain it if she needed to see a doctor about it. She decided to focus on the task at hand, if it happened again she would seek help.
Loki chuckled slightly at her agreement that age has the power to turn anyone bitter. For a second Odin crossed his mind and he let out a full laugh. What a perfect case in point right there. That old man was the most bitter stick up the ass he knew.
He composed himself but the little glimmer in his eyes stayed for longer as his mischievous humourous side flared up. It was rare nowadays but still very much alive. Loki was glad to be reminded of that.
“The Dark Elves are the oldest creatures in existence. Asgard went to war with them and nearly caused their extinction, as is typical for Asgard-” with this he rolled his eyes.
“Eventually, they returned to the Dark World, referred to as Svartalfheim...so I suppose to answer your question, they are practically immortal, but often don’t survive that long due to others.” He gauged her reaction and then continued.
“Age is complicated. For Asgardians, a human’s lifespan is a blink of an eye. But for other creatures such as Dark Elves, the Asgardian lifespan would be comically short. That is if the Asgardians let them live as long as they could. Kill or be killed sort of situation.” It fell silent as Loki shrugged.
“Norns who knows. You might even outlive me. Especially with the predicament, I’m in. Your odds seem far more favorable. Let’s try to keep it that way shall we?” The joke was morbid but Loki wasn’t afraid of death. While he knew it would take a lot to kill him he didn’t doubt that there were forces willing to figure out how.
“Does it scare you? The idea of immortality?”
