How phlogiston is made

Phlogiston is what the alexandrians call the powder with a yellow glow that's often used to fuel spells. It responds to God's word. It can't be found anywhere in nature, but it can be produced artificially. It exists in two forms; liquid and powder. Powdered phlogiston is very easy to produce and handle, the liquid not so much. To make the powder, one must first make an idol.

Idols are statues fashioned after animals. They are hollowed out and the cavity within has two openings: one on the top of the head, and one in the mouth. The mouth is also often closable. The process after the body of the idol is created varies from culture to culture. For example alexandrians bathe them in styx water and anoint them with a special sigil. The next step is to gather quartz sand. The tetrahedral silicate structure has the perfect geometry for containing intercalated phlogiston particles. Its use was also made popular by its favorable optical properties, since the one use all cultures share for phlogiston is to create light with it using the spell "fiat lux". The quartz sand then must be poured into the idol through the opening on the head. The priest will then kneel and recite the appropriate prayer.

The verse will intercalate the sand with phlogiston. The resulting powder may be extracted from the idol through the mouth.

To get liquid phlogiston, one must extract it with supercritical holy water. Alexandrians use a specialized liquid extractor that makes advantage of phlogiston's negative mass. The sand is crushed hydraulically while the supercritical holy water flows between its particles, dissolving the phlogiston. The water is then circulated into a separate reactor where phlogiston is extracted through distillation, and gathers in a chamber above the distillator. Liquid phlogiston is much purer and more potent, and is used to power everything from household appliances to vehicles across the lowlander ring. Its behavior is far too unpredictable in higher rings, and so they don't make any use of it. As for the Vatican: phlogiston immediately loses its glow once entering the area and cannot produce any magical effects.

"The Ancients were capable of wondrous things, but they often made mistakes, and 'dungeons' are the outcome of those mistakes" is a common conceit in dungeon-crawling fantasy, but the Ancients' fuckups are typically framed as products of hubris or madness. I want to see a setting where they messed up for the same reason that real-world engineering and public works projects often come to horrifying ends. The safety reports were suppressed because the architect was somebody's cousin. The plans clearly called for unobtanium rods, but a malfeasant contractor swapped them for mudanium and pocketed the difference. Somebody got sick of having to re-summon the hellgate each dawn and propped it open with a shoe.

I just had the elusive 8 pm nap. It came with a dream so detailed and eldritch that I must write down at least one detail. It might come useful later while writing.

There was a 3d shape that was supposedly the same as the 3d shadow cast by a higher dimensional object. And it was very divine. Like I could build it from Legos and when I rubbed it with my hands, the static electricity made me feel vaguely happy and put a sweet taste in my mouth. I was told in the dream that it's the taste of nectar. Also it'd glow when charged.

Originally, the suffix "-mancy" meant fortune telling. Like osteomancy was/is telling the future with bones. Pyromancy, too, really meant using fire in some sort of way to tell the future, not just generic fire magic. Chronomancy becomes a really funny premise once you stop understanding it as stopping time and shit, and instead just using time to tell the future. Like, yes, lemme just wait and see what's gonna happen. 100% foolproof.
