Value

This is my first post, so please, excuse any blunders. 

Value is something that runs through my brain a lot, not so much as it concerns money, but as a system of measurement for how humans respond to...pretty much anything.

If we do something bad, even if it’s for a good reason, the nature of what we have done is not changed. It is unfortunate that we feel a need to wrap bad actions for good purposes in this cloak of “the greater good” or justify it as “the lesser evil”.This is not to say that doing a bad thing for a good reason is wrong, because that is a matter of perspective. Rather, we need to be willing to understand that why we make these choices is a matter of what we value.

The value that we place on something or someone can directly impact how we interact with that thing or person. I am sure we all are aware of that. Things, and people, that we value can be either good, bad, or neutral. Each valuable has a personal level of importance. Some of those valuables can be sacrificed for the good of other more valuable things and people. We may not like doing it, but we do it because of the set value we have placed in this item or person. We have now committed “the greater good” or “the lesser evil”. 

There are personal values, and societal values. While it would seem that we would be more likely to place our personal values, since they generally mean more to us, at a higher status than our societal ones, when put to the test, that is usually not the case. This has a lot to do with herd mentality and our need to conform with the group.
