So I got thinking at work today and I was thinking about who would win Halloween Heist this year. Then the perfect answer came to me.
Kevin, who has known the team for years. Who would have heard Raymond talk about each heist, the build up, the ludicrous plans, the joy of victory and the dismay of defeat. He would have watched, maybe even helped him plan but mostly kept his distance with a rueful shake of the head. After all, it made Raymond happy…
It was when Gina won that he began to wonder, since non cops could enter and win, that it was feasible, albeit ridiculous for him to try. Then again, he had stolen Raymond’s pie and threw it in the trash and that initial rush of excitement, the giddiness of having outsmarted Raymond and not yet been caught, it was tempting to experience it again. However he stamped down the thought and put it from his mind. Foolish, immature folly.
Then he spent time with Jake. Really got to know the young man and understand how his mind worked. Jake liked to put on a front but really he thought of all the tiny, minute details that others would miss. A challenging opponent but he had played a few rounds of chess with Jake and noticed the same mistakes he made in life as on the board.
Amy was an easy one, always having to prove herself, go one step beyond. If the others were one step ahead, she was three. However in her eagerness, easy mistakes could be made. Or at least she could be led to believe it. After all, who better to spread the seed of doubt in the mind than someone who determined whether a student graduated or failed? When Amy doubted or was distracted, Amy lost.
Gina had the freedom of not being a cop and not too fussed about her job. Therefore with time to plan and prepare and far more clever than she seemed, she would maybe be the most challenging opponent. However Gina loved attention and praise, a few pretend fan accounts across her social media gave him untold access to her mind and her plan.
Boyle and Rosa alternated their loyalty each year but his plan covered all bases. Boyle was too eager to plan his own heist, he loved others getting glory, not him. Rosa loved to win but was too cool to put in effort to pull off a heist, her words that he took to heart. Terry refused to enter the heist because they knew when Terry loved something but when Terry hated something, Terry Hated It. Hitchcock and Scully simply were distracted by some of that pie he and Raymond got every year and let him in and out no questions asked.
Halloween comes, the heist begins and it’s almost too easy for his plans to fall into place. There were times when Raymond, Jake and Amy come close, Gina is an early elimination due to her child being ill - not Kevin’s fault, just a stroke of luck. Rosa and Raymond make a strong team. Jake and Charles are as strong as ever but distracted when Amy drops her own welcome surprise - again, not his fault. Finally it’s midnight and this years prize, all three of their most famous prizes, the crown, the cummerbund and the plaque are nowhere to be found, until they all receive a text inviting them into Raymond’s office.
In a moment of childish delight, Kevin turns around in Raymond’s chair, the crown on his head, the cummerbund on his waist and the plaque in one hand as he pets Cheddar with the other. As they stare at him with shock and awe, he smiles at Raymond and the team.
“Honestly, it wasn’t that difficult.”
