Multi-Boxing in RPGs...
Ok, first of…
For those that don’t know what Multi-Boxing is…
Multi-boxing is the idea of playing as multiple separate characters at the same time.
This can done by using multiple separate character sheets or by running multiple separate instances of the game.
Multi-boxing might be considered a form of cheating.
But it is considered to be difficult to do well without any practice, as it involves adapting to problems in real-time and having the ability two switch from Role-Playing one Character, to Role-Playing the Other.
There are many variations on Multi-Boxing.
Often, the number of Characters the Player is Playing as can be used : such as dual-boxing or two-boxing for two characters, three-boxing for three etc.
Less generally, the term hydra has been used to describe multi-boxing, after the many-headed serpent from Greek mythology.
THE PROBLEMS & BENEFITS OF MULTI-BOXING
Multi-boxing is done for several reasons.
People may enjoy the additional challenge it can bring, as well as being able to tackle more difficult monsters by themselves.
Sometimes it is a matter of convenience, having permanent access to a character that can buff, heal or even resurrect the other Characters in their Party.
Overall, Multi-boxing can be considered a play style choice.
Many people find the additional strategy of multi-boxing to be very challenging and, with those additional efforts, very rewarding.
Rather than require the collaboration and cooperation of multiple human players, people who multi-box instead rely upon themselves to control multiple game characters and utilize their own abilities as a replacement for human co-operation.
While multi-boxing, the player does not necessarily have to spend time looking for a group to join in an adventure with, but rather can repeatedly participate in content without the risk of someone leaving in the middle of the encounter.
And, not to leave of of mentioning, many see the idea of “Role-Playing while Multi-boxing” quite funny as a concept, since it involves the Player talking to themselves, while role-playing both Characters at the same time.
Multi-boxing may be as simple as owning two Character Sheets for one game and switching between them.
Players may also use own two or more Characters, each with their own personality, ideals, flaws and life-long goals.
This quickly becomes impractical with an increasing number of Characters, and can overload a DM or GM with the amount of details they need to remember for each Character or Player.
Having 4 Players sat at the table is fine, But when each of those 4 Players is controlling 2 Characters, that totals to eight Characters.
And as your Group may gain new Players, this can rapidly become very complicated and confusing…
COMPATIBILITY WITH THE GAME’S RULES
Multi-boxing is generally allowed, because the Characters are still subject to all the normal rules of the game and are controlled by the Player directly.
Most RPGs and DMs only allow a single Character Sheet and a single Character per Player to be playing at once, so multi-boxers need a separate Character Sheet for each character they want to play simultaneously…
Overall, if your Dungeon Master or Game Master allows it, and are willing to get involved in the madness, then Multi-boxing should be OK in your game.
