I can’t believe this is the beginning of my fourth year of trying to make #circularfashion happen. In 2019 I bought nothing new and since then I have continued to buy mindfully by choosing second hand first and when buying new making sure I support the good brands. This year it will be more or I should say less of the same, as per every year I want to try and reduce the size of my wardrobe but first and foremost I would love to reduce my consumption. Reduce my consumption of things, of social media, of fashion trends, of toxic news and everything in between. A weekend of firsts! I finished my first ever chunky cardigan and I think I made a reel to show you it?! Ha. For as long as I can remember, I always knit something during the winter months and this year I set myself a bigger than a scarf challenge. I went online and check out the kind of knits that I thought I could make. It needed to be big, thick, colorful and easy to make. To my surprise, there’s millions of patterns to follow. I came across @abbieknits on @lovecraftsknitting and I am really impressed with the results. It was super easy to follow, I had never read or followed knitting instructions previously and to my delight a cardigan did come out HA! There is something really beautiful about time spent knitting or doing any kind of creative project don’t you think? Making the reel on the other hand was a LOT harder to put together. Happiness is hanging out with @mr_whittaker_the_spoodle in my surprise delivery dress from @little_tienda Yesssssss as usual my subscription frock ticks all of the boxes: my favourite colors, beautiful block printed cotton, voluminous sleeves, a matching belt and pockets! I do have a chuckle whenever I hear people referring to pre loved clothes as dead peoples' clothes. The girl that sold me this fabulous cotton dress with pockets by @misterzimi on @ebayfashion was alive and well She wore it a total of 3 times before listing it on eBay, it wasn’t cheap, but I let go of a couple of not so right frocks in my own wardrobe to let this one in and so glad I did. I have worn it 3 times already and I am about to wear it again today. Yeah, two days in a row… the controversy! Anyway, I wore it to merchandise my pop up store yesterday and ended up doing a massive cull of the shop. I am going to miss the pattern clashing layers I’ve been wearing to the office this winter Layering is such a good way of making sure you get the most wear out of all the things in your wardrobe These days I work from home so I wear jeans under dresses under some crazy vest and I add and take off as the day goes by My top tip with layering, is chuck all the rules out if the window and have fun like you used to when you were a toddler - you probably don’t remember, but I bet you didn’t care about the color palette, the patterns or the style I am wearing a shirt a vest, under the jacket (I know, groundbreaking) with some other old stuff. Right, so I started my climate crisis “personal action plan” and whilst some things are a bit out there (vote Scott Morrison out) some others are quite achievable. But first, checking my hypocrisy meter was at the top of my list, yes I mean I am really good at keeping my fashion world circular and when it comes to clothes donations I am really good a segmenting them into piles to make sure they will go to the best charity organisations depending on their style Suits go to @suited_to_success other funky stuff go to @studio_thrifty_4 and so on but I am not perfect and should have done a bit more research before dropping some house related textiles to the charity shops For example, did you know cotton tea towels can biodegrade in the garden? Some organizations like @upparelofficial are able to sell worn/damaged/un-saleable clothing companies that recycle the clothing/textiles for industrial rags or other textile byproducts Your pre-loved sheets and towels (any brand) can go to your local @sheridanaustralia store, they might also be needed by animal shelters, vets or even the mechanics. All it takes is a phone call to check what items they might need… The @planetark website has a bunch of resources and links to useful websites that I found super handy. This is me, realizing it’s Friday after a week filled with some very depressing news about the environment Alright, so am not dressed as Carmen Miranda drinking espresso martini’s, it’s not seven am yet HA but what am trying to say it’s that I am not going to let the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report get me down or paralyze me any more, I am going to get active! I am not going to lie, it comes as no surprise whatsoever that climate change is worse than we thought and also getting worse by the minute… The environment is one of the reasons why I bought nothing new in 2019 and the point of continuing with this account was to inspire to style what’s already in your wardrobe or someone else’s wardrobe Over the last few years I have sent letters to dozens of brands asking them for transparency and kept my wardrobe very circular and I will continue to do all that, but I am now at a point where I feel I need to do more I am going to take it up with the people In power, we need reforms at the highest levels, remember cigarettes? Yeah, no me neither because the government took drastic measures. We need the exact same approach with fashion. We need a minimum set of standards of design, production and transparently encompassing all areas of production. From what’s it made to who’s making them and how did they get here. Are the makers getting paid, are they safe, is it made with toxic and unsafe materials for humans and the environment? I mean how are these even questions we have to ask these days? We have such a long way to go. I do my best, but reports like this are truly overwhelming and I can’t believe the governments around the world are letting this happen. Other than going to the post box the other day I haven’t left the house for any other reason whatsoever (since the first day of the Brisbane lockdown) I don’t plan to leave the house until my vaccine appointment next Tuesday, but that does not mean I am not getting dressed On the contrary, I am wearing all of the things, okay, so I am not getting my dress under vest a blazer with feature belt and lace up boots on but I am definitely changing out my pyjamas and definitely not wearing active wear I am even enjoying wearing my bright red lipstick again.
