Vlad grunted as Jack’s body was thrown into him and knocked them both to the ground. The half ghost pushed his friend into his lap, about to get up when noticed all the blood, “Jack?”

The ghost was forgotten about, a barrier appearing around the pair. Vlad touched Jack’s shoulder gingerly as blood continued to pool, “Jack? Maddie?! Ja-Jack’s…!”

Maddie nodded jerkily, an absent ‘uh-huh’ escaping her lips as she stared down at Jack, his face even paler than hers.

Jack’s eyelids fluttered slightly, gaze shifting to Vlad’s face, lips moving just barely. “Vla….” He tried to respond, but the words just faded out.

“Stay with me, Jack,” Vlad mumbled back, scooping up the big man. He seemed too light. Well, he was losing blood. How much blood could a human lose before they died?

Vlad didn’t want to think about that anymore.

Once Jack was supported well enough, Vlad took off from the ground, the barrier vanishing. Hopefully Maddie really did have this under control.

Jack’s gaze was fixed blankly upward, unseeing as his breath stuttered and slowed….

Maddie - who’d still been firing at the ghost, unaware of what had happened - turned at Vlad’s yelling, eyes widening as she took in the scene. “Oh my God, Jack!” She rushed over to the pair, dropping down next them.

Vlad didn’t even look at her, gently shaking Jack again, “Jack, please...”

This couldn’t be real. But the blood running down his legs felt pretty real. Jack’s fading breath was too loud to be real, “Jack...”

What if this was real? Jack needed a hospital right now, “Maddie, I have to... get him to the hospital. Can you handle that?”

Jazz wasn’t quite sure when her surroundings shifted, all she knew was that she was in an unfamiliar place, and the people around her were… well, it looked like they were having an 80s throwback party. Confused about where to go from here, she figured she’d start with a quick check at the library. If she could find it.

“Excuse me, can you show me where the library is?” she called out, jogging up to the nearest person she could find.

Vlad turned to face the voice calling to him and blinked in surprise; a cute girl (other than Maddie) was talking to him. She must be new! Better enjoy it while he can before she caught wind of his loser/weirdo reputation. He brushed his white hair back (it was starting to get shaggy, he’d have to get Maddie to cut it again soon) and gave her a friendly smile. At least, he hoped it was friendly and not creepy, “Sure. Follow me.”

“Yeah, life can be really funny sometimes,” Thorek lightly mused, remembering some of the many friends he had made over the years, and how opinions could shift. “It’s weird how much can just change in a year.”

“It really is. I mean, Jack and Maddie have had to completely re-evaluate their lifelong opinions on ghosts in the wake of my accident. I have too, but in different ways,” Vlad chuckled, thinking about how he was a year ago, “We’re almost there. Maybe we’ll get lucky and Maddie and Jack will be elsewhere.”

“How long have you known Jack?” he questioned.

“I met him here at college, so only a few years,” Vlad shrugged, “I actually found him kind of annoying at first, but he grew on me. Now I can’t imagine life without him. That’s kind of weird, isn’t it?”

“He’s in his fifties,” he explained. Thorek really did not want to elaborate on the details of Vlad’s “family”, and he glanced down at the book he had taken. The title was a lot clearer to read, On the Functions of Ghosts. “Do you live with Jack and Maddie then?”

“Oh,” Well, that makes a bit more sense. And suddenly Vlad was left wondering if he had kids would they inherit his half ghost nature...? And hey, another topic change, “Just Jack; Maddie lives on her own, though we’re looking into a larger apartment that could support all three of us.”

“I have before,” he replied honestly. “My you, my Vlad? I was basically a personal private doctor for him and his children. Timeline and parallel information may differ, but most of the general rules seem to apply throughout.”

“Interesting... Your Vlad has kids?” Vlad arched an eyebrow. He did want kids someday, but given what Thorek had told him about his version of him, Vlad was surprised to hear that.

“More of a doctor that happens to be a ghost,” he explained with a small smile. This was a much nicer Vlad than he expected. “I can treat ghosts and humans. Ghosts have some ghost-specific illnesses or ailments, but they can get regular sick too.”

“Does that mean you could treat human-ghost abominations like me?” Vlad inquired; it might be a good idea to get some sort of doctor in light of this new information. Guess he must just been lucky so far.

Thorek was a bit hesitant, but he followed anyway. Once out of the room, he cancelled the small ball of ectoenergy that was giving him light.

“Aren’t all college apartments like that to begin with?” he joked.

“True,” Vlad chuckled too, leading Thorek out of the building, “So you’re a ghost doctor? Ghosts can get sick?”
