I don't think we appreciate cereal crop enough. For thousands of years, billions of people across the planet survived because of bread and beer.
If rye and wheat and rice failed to grow, famine was inevitable, and so were water born diseases (beer brewing process removed bacteria and parasites from water).
Harvest was how humanity survived until now. And the crop never got a say in it- it is the unwilling sacrifice to the greater good, being assumed to have no purpose but to give itself to the service of humanity.
Life on Earth exists by the Grace of Rye Land.
