Realised I'd never photographed my turnip 28 brutes so thought I'd take advantage of the sun.
Never did nail painting things to look deliberately messy as opposed to looking like I just painted them messily. But still pleased with the conversions.
They're mostly a combo of Wargames Atlantic Les Grognards and Frostgrave Demons.
The ranged brutes are demons with grognard rifles (magazines and mechanical gubbins shaved off) and (I think?) heads. Used the little armour bits from the demons prue to give the helmets gorgets.
Melee brutes are grognards with the chests shaved down into breastplates, with demon arms and victrix knight helms and shields.
Then both got cluttered backpacks and rooty scraggle dolloped on.
The Shattered Lance expansion for Turnip28 is finally in balance testing, and that has motivated me to draw (and post) some Turnip28 stuff again.
If you don't know, Turnip28 is a completely free tabletop war game. It takes place in a strange alternative future, where technology has stagnated around the Napoleonic age, and a weird root has infested the world, turning most people and things in some kind of turnip based mutants. The setting does not take itself serious AT ALL and I have seen it described as the Monty Python of war games. You can get the rules here. Official minis exist, but kit bashing is allowed and encouraged.
I always wanted to design tabletop armies, but I don't have the time, money, space, skill or patience to get into miniature crafting and painting. So I made my army from paper standees.
This is my first army for the Fungivorous Herd. It's a rip-off lovingly inspired by Darkest Dungeons' swine folk. Top to bottom, left to right we have the toff (commander), toady (lieutenant), fodder (basic infantry), brute (better infantry), chalf (snipers), bastards (heavy cavalry), welps (light cavalry), the herde itself (special unit) and the stump gun (artillery)
So much to love here. The horrid Tan-Jenkins-esque hog steed, the ball of pig, the varied helms.
But special shout out to the double-barrelled snout-cannon.

Did you just watch Trigun Stampede or have you also watched the Madhouse anime or read Trigun Maximum? I wanna know if there are many differences
...well... I have read trimax way too many times to count over the past 18 years or so...the same applies to the 98 anime (and sort of the badlands rumble movie which is slightly younger).. Trigun is one of my most beloved pieces of fiction that I keep on coming back to and that shaped me as a person..
I have also watched Stampede and am keeping updated on Stargaze, n my emotions on them are mostly mixed.. -> apathy, boredom, boiling rage n hate, and being entertained by the comedy of errors.
Its so completely different from the source material, it could be a whole new show with whole new cast of characters, if it wasnt for some of the manga inspired story beats that its checking off at breakneck speed, and without, in my opinion, any deeper thoughts.
+ I really dislike the new broken cyberpunkish aesthetics... And miss the scifi wild west thing with the postapo mad max bdsm fashion peppered in to spice it all up...
Its also like... if you were comparing a Spaghetti western by Sergio Leone, mixed with some profound scifi the likes of 2001 Space Odyssey or Solaris, and some comedic absurd action of El Mariachi and Desperado by Rodriguez....
VS
A new MARVEL movie (derogatory)
Speedrunning plot points is an excellent way to describe my issues with Trigun Stampede/Stargaze. It's felt more like a checklist of beats to hit rather than a naturally flowing story in its own right.
Admittedly I'm a little salty that we're missing out on manga Livio, Razlo and Elendira. But just being different isn't a flaw. Introducing Knives and making him an active participant much earlier in the story was an interesting move and I was on board for that.
But there's barely any time spent just enjoying our main characters. I'd gladly have skipped a few of the gung-ho guns for more character beats. It's hard to feel much for this Vash when we never really get to know him.
But worst of all, Vash and Wolfwood still don't feel like friends. And there's not much time left to fix that.
And while I'm Trigun-posting...
While the final arc of the manga is my absolute favourite part of any Trigun media, I still think that 90s anime Legato was a better character than the manga's.

[guy whose bedtime is approaching fast] I need to write one billion words right now. and draw everything that has ever existed.
This is so cool. People saying nice things about my werewolf game inspire me to make more stuff.
I am just a shameless glutton for positive feedback. It motivates me so much.
I wonder if Jessica Rabbit gets annoyed when the paparazzi catch her in a smear frame.
Seemed like a wizard-mech was a good candidate for some iteration on the arm-cloak idea from one of my mechatober mechs.
The colours are also a vague reference, as I was thinking about something in particular when I was choosing the scheme.
i'm sure something like this has been done before, but since i'm on a merch design kick ... 🔪🩸
the urge to pull some bullshit when carrying my expensive laptop terrifies me
“wheeeewww what if i just tossed it in the air just a little bit hoo hoo hahahahajssa”
and sometimes i can’t help but give in and give it a couple millimeters of air
Two protagonists of very different stories!
Me: Yeah they even named a syndrome after you. Oedipus: Is it for when someone's really good at riddles?
Melee fodder, bastards and snobs to finally finish off my #turnip28 regiment. This project has made for a fun couple of months.
And a shot of everything laid out on my coffee table.
Final tally:
4 buildings
1 coop
5 barricades
3 stakes
4 objectives
6 smoke markers
1 toff
7 toadies
12 fodder (blackpowder)
12 fodder (melee)
4 chaff (blackpowder)
6 brutes (blackpowder)
6 brutes (melee)
4 whelps (blackpowder)
3 bastards (melee)
6 rootlings
2 stump guns
2 chickens
and 1 ferocious lump
I am technically one objective short, but I ran out of 40mm bases. My opponent will have to stump one up.
Turnip 28 needs smoke tokens to track who's used their blackpowder weapons. Most people use cotton wool, but I don't like how easily damaged it is. So I experimented with something more sculptural. I think it's ok?
It's hard to sculpt a cloud, so I went with something wispier just to ensure it reads as "smoke". It's symbolic as much as anything.
