A Lorre caricature that never was
A mutual informed me of this rejected Looney Tunes action show created by Maxwell Atoms (Billy and Mandy) and C.H. Greenblatt (Chowder)
It is a Men in Black- and Miami Vice-inspired action-comedy followed Daffy Duck and Porky Pig as monster-fighting ACME agents, with Witch Hazel serving as the main villain.
But the real reason why I bring this up is because of the concept art of the Peter Lorre character:
HE LOOKS LIKE A REJECTED CHICKEN FETUSππππππ
I would have loved for this show to have been just for him <3333
He looks an awful lot like Slappy, and I think I know why. CH Greenblatt has worked on Spongebob, especially for the earlier seasons. He does return on occasion to write an episode or two, I know for a fact he did design The Patrick Star Show designs. I know while Kaz was the one who made Slappy, his first appearance in Spongebob's Big Birthday Blowout was very clearly unrefined. He looks quite different from shot to shot in that episode. I think it is safe to assume his design got refined (presumably by Greenblatt) for the Patrick Star Show. Hence why this character and Slappy look so alike.
You know outside of them both being little Peter Lorre creatures <3
i watched casablanca recently and i hate to say it but peter lorre is kind of a #boy. reblog

Frank Capra, Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)/James Whale, Frankenstein (1931)
The comparison of Jonathan to the monster is pretty clear. Frankenstein is either Mortimer or Einstein. I like Einstein for this. He's the one who physically works on Jonathan, literally builds him, is complicit in Jonathan's murders, and can't or won't escape. Einstein seems more worried about legal repercussions than anything Jonathan might do to him, and Frankenstein runs from his guilt, never confessing until he's on his third deathbed. He and Frankenstein are each their own hostage more than they are the monster's.
But Mortimer is more haunted by Jonathan the way Frankenstein is haunted by the monster. He's the reason Jonathan comes back. They're intent on destroying each other but can't. If Einstein is book Frankenstein, Mortimer is movie Frankenstein, and the Brewsters are the Frankenstein movie franchise, always trying to get rid of Jonathan, who keeps getting rebuilt, chased away, or locked up. And then the rest of the family happily gets on with their lives. Possibly Jonathan represents the guilty conscience none of them seem to have- the aunts for not loving him as well, and Mortimer for neglecting his aunts, neglecting Elaine, and covering up the murders. In the end the guilty conscience destroys itself and the family lives happily ever after. There's the popular question around Frankenstein, "Who's the real monster?" And Arsenic and Old Lace answers, "Everyone."
ooh it's cool to see where the inspiration may have come from. and the parallels >:]]] those shots are rlly similar. einstein being the one to "construct" jonathan's image ooh... build him. the one to screw up his reintroduction to the aunts. i feel like there's a bit of a parallel here with the book too, as frankenstein's monster also finds a family and tries to introduce himself, befriend them, but is rejected because of his looks. I found a page where the creature describes seeing himself for the first time:
and another where he laments his ugliness and expresses hatred for his creator, determined to find his creator and "seek justice".
but most of all, i think of this scene between victor frankenstein (first speaker) and his monster (second speaker), page 210 i think. where victor refuses to make a companion for his creature. by this point the monster/creature has already killed victor's little brother;
"I shall be with you on your wedding-night". and when does arsenic and old lace take place?
on the night mortimer is married to elaine. "we drink to you..."
in M 1931, I especially like the scene of the two men arguing over what color the hat was, because we saw the girl too. BUT. the film is in b&w so we canβt know the color either !!! we, the audience, are put in much the same position to them, we bore witness to this event and yet we can be of no help in solving the mystery and catching the criminal.
