for my 16 year old self who loves these two to death heres some ineffable husbands. watching the finale tonight
sharing my good omens 3 thoughts
disclaimer: spoilers for the finale and this is all my opinion!!!!
Definitely feeling a lot of mixed emotions right now. I already knew going into this that it wouldn’t be the best but I had some hope.
That hope disappeared at during the ending.
Let start off with the parts that I did enjoy! I really loved Jesus. He was my favorite character of the finale and I smiled every time he came on screen. He was so kind and so lovable and I wished they utilized his character more. I also enjoyed the banter between Crowley and Aziraphale. Their back and forth trips from Earth to Heaven were quite funny. I also liked that Michael was causing chaos and destroying the Book of Life. It felt on brand since Michael really wanted to be in charge and started to take drastic measures to get what they wanted.
Now onto the things I dislike. I will say that I personally disliked the ending A LOT. I understand what they were going for; Crowley and Aziraphale wanted to have a world where humans could have a chance to grow and have free will. Like okay, that’s sweet. But by doing so, they erased themselves and everything else to make a completely new world which also completely erases their existence. The 6,000 years they had together, their chemistry, their emotions, their memories all gone in the blink of an eye. The very essence of their characters were stripped away and they became lifeless copies of what they once were.
It’s so jarring to me that all that talk of “we can run away together” and “we’re on our side” and “a group of the two of us” was just flown out the window. Why make these characters just to rearrange them into versions that are now humans and barely have the traits of their original selves who have a quick meet cute then bam, there’s a cut to 20 years later where they’re happily living together. It felt like I was watching two completely new characters for a completely different show.
And to go back to the point of them creating a whole new world, they talked so much about how they didn’t wanna lose each other, but in the end they still did. They may have met in this new universe, but the buildup was completely gone and erased. And what makes me even more upset is that it felt a little out of character for Crowley and Aziraphale to wish for this. They cared so much for each other, and they loved the world that they lived in. They carved out a home for themselves on earth with the bookshop, with the Bentley, even with the restaurants they’d go to. And for them to then go ‘hey let’s erase everything so everyone can start new’ just felt so odd. That leads me to my other issue, which is the butchering of Crowley and Aziraphale’s characters before the ending. Crowley chose humanity over Aziraphale which felt so out of character. Crowley always chose Aziraphale. We see that in seasons one and two. But apparently, he wants to get rid of everything and have them not exist anymore.
What I thought they were going to do when the entire world disappeared and it was just them in the bookshop was that Aziraphale and Crowley would rewrite the Book of Life with all the blank books in the bookshop, and that they would become celestial guardians over Earth and creation. I feel like it would’ve been more meaningful to have them putting the world back together by writing it down and then adding how they wanted free will for humanity so that they had a real chance to grow and flourish. But no. None of that. Just a sad attempt at an ending.
I also thought that Crowley and Aziraphale didn’t even reconcile properly. There was like a quick ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘I forgive you’ and that was that. And there is even more I wanna say but this review is already so long and it’s honestly making me more unhappy with the ending.
Overall, I personally think that this felt like a great disservice to the characters and world of Good Omens. A very disappointing watch for me.
i love my crowley and aziraphale miis
