What is a Hekau

Fist to understand the basics of what a hekau is one most understand the history of magic in Egypt.

   Egypt is known as the “Mother of Magic”. There are many reasons why but one of the reasons is due to the god Thoth (god of writing, speech, wisdom and magic) and the goddess Isis. This god and goddess send influence over not only Egypt but to some cults in northern Europe.

   Why Thoth is so grand, is due to him inviting writing and speech for mankind. All of Egypt revolved around things being written down and kept in documents. This includes their spells, how spirits work (Ka), and even what happened after death. Those three subjects were very important in Egypt so for there to be a way to keep them documented and safe was amazing. Thoth gave writing to man, so many believe he invited magic. They believe this because Egyptian spells were written down and re-sighted by speech. Thoth may have invited heka. (The magic the gods used to make the world.)

    Hekau are blessed beings able to use heka with blessing from the gods and goddesses. In order for one to be a hekau they must be blessed. Only a hekau can be bestowed or withheld with heka. The gods and goddesses make sure to pick their hekau very carefully because even after death the hekau’s ka is blessed to help the gods or given a blessed next life. Hekau must also be willing to study night and day. They would stay up late at night reading and re-sighting spell after spell. They were the true book worms of Egypt. 

   Even with a hekau’s many spell books, a hekau was nothing without their wand. This wand was made out of hippopotamus ivory. Carved into the wand, are strict spells and instructions on what one does after death when they travel through the underworld. The wand is very powerful and often associated with goddess Tawaret (goddess of childbirth and fertility) and the god Bes (a fat dwarf god of dance, music, and pleasure). A hekau can not do magic with out their wand.

The Basic Beginning

*Warning Egyptian mythology has NSFW content, keep this in mind as you read.*

     This a basic, popular belief in how the world, according to Egyptian mythology, was created as well stories and tales can change due to different regions in Egyptian. This is just the dominant story. 

     Atum is one of the oldest gods of Egpytian mythology. Him a Ra (Re) have a very similar story. Ra is is a more modern god of Ancient Egypt. For the sake of time, confustion, and respect I will just say “both the gods”. (At some point, the two gods become one but I won’t get into that today.) Both the gods thought themselves into existence. They create to universe and everything in it through “the divine masturbation”. The first group was the gods Tefnut (god of moisture), Geb (god of earth), Orisis (god of order and the dead), Seth (god of disorder, storm, and violence) and the goddesses Shu (goddess of air), Nut (goddess of the sky) Isis (goddess of magic, mother hood, and medicine) and Nephtys (goddess of house). There are four gods and four goddesses to represent four different aspects of the universe. The male and female represented the possibility of life. (Now be aware that not all this happen at once. There is a family tree Ra and Atum just started the chain reaction.)

     The beings that in inhabited the earth were frogs (males), baboons (females), and snakes (female). At some point in the mythology some of those animals become the males and females of Egypt. There is also other versions on how man came to be in older text. One is that Khum (craftsman god) created humans out of clay on his potter’s wheel. A more modern text is that Ra cried in joy at his creations the tears turned into humans when they landed on earth. Those these humans were savages and cannibals. Both the gods found this disgraceful and decided to punish the human race. They took out one of their eyes and created Hathor (goddess of joy, feminine love and fertility). Both the gods told her to punish mankind. She became the goddess Sakhmet (goddess of war and destiny). She took the form of a lioness and began slaughtering everyone. She had gotten a taste of blood and wouldn’t stop. Both the gods had to create a potion which looked like blood and trick Sakhmet to drink it. Once she drank the potion she fell into a deep sleep. Once she awoke she forgot everything and went back home. 

      Luckily soon after the first human Egyptian ruler was born, Orisis. Orisis, in old text, is the son of the god Khum (a very ancient god) who turned human and impregnated Queen Mutemnja.  He taught man farming and how to live off the land. Later he married his sister Isis and the two created civilization in Egypt.
