I write primarily fics centered around Carla. The centre of my romance pieces is Gabe/Carla (Gabela), as I wrote them long before I came to despise them together. However, while I no longer ship them, I am still proud of how writing them helped me improve my craft over time.

After graduating from school in the Mirror World, Carla returns to Avalor permanently and is presented with a new challenge far more difficult than any magic dilemma she's faced so far - finally confronting her long-hidden feelings for a certain Guard Captain who's having an equally difficult time reconciling his own for her. (This was my second EoA fic and it’s not up to par with my recent work, but I’ve still got a soft spot for it).

Como Tú Me Quieres (1, 2) (Gabela) (Explicit)

Intimate evenings were nothing new to her. But if this one happened, it would be different from any they'd shared so far. Her nervousness grows like a flame the more she ruminates on it... But Carla is nothing if not determined to at least try and see the night through. Whatever the results might be.

A nervousness mixed with sadness for an absence she keenly feels. But despite how lonely she may have felt in her early life, she knows that she is not alone now. Nor is she in bad company either.

When storm clouds roll in, Carla is drawn from her reading and is faced with a long-hidden fear from her childhood. Fortunately, she doesn't have to weather it alone, not when Gabe is there to help her through it.

Drabble. During an afternoon date, Carla realises that she’s really, truly in love with Gabe. The only question is, does he feel the same?

The Best Medicine (Gabela)

The Second Navidad

Written for the EoA Secret Santa 2019 and set in my friend’s AU, in which Victor, Ash and Carla celebrate their second Navidad together since her return.

In Memories and Dances

For as long as Carla can remember, dancing has been a part of her. A way for her to connect with both the mother she never met and the father who raised her on his own. But, as her and Victor's first time performing for more than a street crowd approaches, Carla can't help nerves creeping up on her. Adding to that, the pettiness of the other contestants makes her wonder if pushing through this pageant is even worth it.

Better in Purple

They said that in Paraiso everything had  'a little bit more,' including the beauty pageants. As far as Carla was concerned, 'they' were wrong. Little didn't even begin to describe the annoyance of getting ready for her first pageant in Paraiso with a coach whose tastes clashed horribly with her vision.

The start of the Mirror World’s “True Love” timeline. If she had taken the chance and been strong enough to embrace her feelings earlier, maybe he wouldn't have had time to fall for someone else. Or maybe, it just wasn't meant to be all along. After all, why WOULD the Captain of the Guard want a former criminal?

The Invitation

In an alternate version of the “True Love” timeline, seven years after the events of "True Love," Carla is 25 and having to cope with a second wave of rejection.

Wrong Again

In a different timeline, four years after the dissolution of her marriage, Carla (now 32), is faced with the task of letting go of the last remnants of happiness past as the man she once loved moves on with someone else. (This was written before Rafictor was a thing, so I made the mistake of creating an OC for him and haven’t gone back to edit her out).

Still in Love

The beach used to be a fun place. Sun, sand, laughter... memories. Now, a year after the dissolution of her marriage, Carla only finds reminders of what used to be.

Sorry for Loving You

It had only been a few hours since he woke up and found her gone. Nothing left but a ring, a letter and a signed dissolution. Despite the pain, Gabe knows that life has to go on. But merely acknowledging it and acting upon it are two different things. Especially when the pain is your own fault.

Part of the Mirror World AU's "True Love" timeline. As happy as she is to see her father and all her friends find their happily ever after, Carla can't quell the feeling that she's missing out on something, even after giving up on the idea of romance.

Problems with The Birthday Cruise

This post is somewhat inspired by a post I read by @lieutenant-amuel a while back, and for a while, it’s gotten me thinking: what was the point of developing a friendship between Elena and Chloe in “The Birthday Cruise” in season 3? I’m asking this question not only because Elena barely interacted with Chloe in “The Norberg Peace Prize”, but because Elena teaching Chloe social skills doesn’t add anything to her character arc for that season. Elena’s growth in season 3 was about her learning how to forgive by forgiving Esteban for his past wrongdoings. How does the aforementioned episode contribute to this?

Elena isn’t the one learning a lesson-she’s teaching someone else.

We can’t attribute this episode to Mateo’s development, as he’s only tagging along to provide entertainment for the princesses.

Esteban isn’t seen nor mentioned in this episode, so Chloe willingly choosing to stay with the sea nymph in exchange for her friends’ freedom can’t be attributed as foreshadowing for Esteban’s sacrifice in “Coronation Day.”

This episode was clearly designed to develop Chloe, a side character that we weren’t introduced to until earlier that season. She adds nothing to the plot for that season nor the show itself. So why did the show dedicate an entire episode to her?

I know that this episode was meant to show Elena having fun with her princess friends since she was missing Naomi, who was exploring the seven seas at the time. However, the episode still should have had more of a connection to the overall plot and Elena’s character development. There was no reason to diverge from the main plot at the time, much less focus on a minor character.

This episode touches an underlying issue in season 3: the pacing and character focus. If you’re dedicating the focus of an entire episode to a character who has little to no impact on the overall plot, especially in the show’s final season, then that’s misplaced focus. This show is about Elena. Of we’re watching her teach another character something rather then her or another one of the mains learn an important lesson, then what’s the point? As I mentioned above, Chloe doesn’t contribute to the plot. If a character isn’t a key player in the story, then there’s no point in giving them an entire episode. Chloe was created to add tension to the Gabe and Naomi subplot in “Norberg Peace Prize.” There was no purpose for her beyond that, and unlike other royals such as Alonso and Valentina, Elena had no pre established friendship with Chloe, despite the episode telling us that Elena was Chloe’s only friend.

I don’t know…it just felt like they pushed Chloe into the role of being one of Elena’s princess friends despite no reason to. Elena had to work with Alonso and Valentina for the good of her country and their’s, and became friends with them along with way, while also learning how to work with other royals. As I mentioned, Elena didn’t learn anything from her experience with Chloe, and Chloe’s development did not have an impact on the plot. As such, the episode of itself was filler.

If the show wanted to cheer Elena up while she was missing Naomi, then were plenty of more plot relevant friends that they could have done an episode with that could have furthered Elena’s or another character’s arc while building up to the finale. Instead, we waste an episode that should have been focused on wrapping up the show’s plot.

I have my own feelings on this episode and want to add: if they were going to do an "I don't know how to make friends" episode this late in the series... Why did it not go to Carla?!

You know, the character who's been there since S1 and could have really benefited from friends her own age? Who said herself that, "the only thing that didn't change is that I would feel alone?" And who, at the point where "The Birthday Cruise" takes place canonically, was already on her sunset path and in the dungeon after turning herself in following Ash turning Victor to stone. She was literally right there.

I honestly think an episode like "The Lightning Warrior" should have happened earlier and then we should have gotten bits and pieces of Carla and Victor adjusting to their new roles and lives, even if it was mostly in the background. I also think they should have stayed Malvagos because it was shown in the very episode that having some on their side could be helpful, but I digress.

Anywho, if Carla had been the focal point of the episode, some of the problems you mentioned would have been solved. It would have not only expanded on Elena's character development in learning to trust Carla we first saw in "The Lightning Warrior" -- something she could lean back into in the Esteban arc -- but given Carla the development we didn't get to see. Because the thing with her story is that the lead up was good. Everything up through "The Magic Within" was solid. They just fumbled the ending terribly.

And I could see Carla struggling the same way Chloe did. Trying to make up for her past and leaning a bit too much into people pleasing to make friends at first. We even saw some of it in "King of the Carnival," where she played up being soft and sweet upon initially meeting Elena. However, we know it wouldn't take long for that to crack. Carla is way too strong of a personality to not speak up eventually.

Mind y'all... and I want to make this clear. I do not hate Chloe. I have nothing against her. But as stated in the original post, we just met her earlier in the season and, in my opinion, the plot of her episode would have worked better and hit harder if it had been given to Carla.

Overall, I think season three is a narrative mess (I'll get a full essay on this complete eventually). Not bad. Just messy. As you pointed out, they spent too much time waffling around at the end. Most of the fillers at the back end of the season aren't really bad, they just suffer from "it's too late in the season for this." But giving "The Birthday Cruise" plot to anyone other than Carla is the one thing I will honestly say was a bad writing decision.

The story in S3 REALLY declined after the Estéban reveal. It was such a big plot and they dropped the ball hard by not making it the MAIN STORY FOCUS. EoA got to the point where it had to pick one. Episodic or serialised. AND IT DIDN’T. And the plot suffered for it.

Post-canon, Akito-centric fic recs

I'm back with 2 more Akito-centric fic recs because over the weekend, I had an incredibly vivid dream about her and immediately had to hunt down some fanfic, lol.

These two one-shots are the kinds of stories that are so beautifully written, it almost hurts. The prose and imagery used in each is so evocative and moving, and I was in tears by the end of them both.

The first is the hope i want to share with you by ao3 user warsfeil (I tried looking them up on Tumblr and couldn't find a blog, but if you know them under a different username, please let me know, as I would obviously love to tag them for credit!).

It's a 13K story told through vignettes, and MY GOD. It's actually a bit difficult for me to convey how reading it made me feel, but I've included an excerpt below that I really loved. For context, this takes place after Akito has a dream in which she and Shigure are getting married, and Ren is present at the wedding, taunting her:

Akito can’t speak, for a moment: she grips onto Shigure so tightly he hisses, her nails leaving crescent moons of red welling in their wake, and she buries her face into his chest and squeezes her eyes shut like it will help subside the fear that permeates her entire body.

“I’m here,” Shigure says, which is the exact right thing to say but also the wrong thing entirely because it makes that fear bubble back up into Akito’s chest until she can’t help but cry. “What were you dreaming about?”

Akito can’t manage the words, at first, so she just stays there. It’s familiar, to cry against Shigure, to let him wrap his arms around her and stroke her hair until she sleeps -- but she doesn’t think she’ll be going back to sleep, this time.

“I don’t want a wedding,” Akito says, and she feels Shigure pause. “I don’t mean I don’t want to get married. I don’t -- I don’t want a wedding. I don’t want anything to go wrong”

“Then we won’t have one,” Shigure says, “but even if we did, I wouldn’t let her touch it.”

Akito knows, she knows the kind of things Shigure thinks about -- he talks about revenge with his fingers trailing around his sake cup, he reads records and papers and forms plans and ideas that Akito can barely follow, much less follow through on -- but something in her heart still aches at the idea of it all. Relief that he’d fight for her; sadness that he has to; guilt that she could ever think of allowing anyone to get revenge on her behalf when she’s left so many broken on her own.

The second is worthy, by @renywrites (Renegade_Reaper on ao3). I think I'd read anything you write, Reny!!

Just like their story 'I can barely breathe', worthy is so, so gorgeously written, and is a 6K fic exploring Akito's mental state after the curse break. Have you ever read prose so beautiful it's like a wallop to the face? Lol, that's how it felt reading this, in a good way!!

I've included an excerpt from it as well, and for context, this scene takes place in a Catholic church, during a trip that Shigure and Akito take to San Francisco. Note that Akito uses they/them pronouns:

Shigure leads them into the large building, into a huge room with stained glass windows depicting men and women and children. Akito was sure they meant something, but to them, it was just pretty imagery.

They’re left by the altar as Shigure goes to track someone down, likely to interrogate for his book. They watch him go, left to take in their surroundings and hope that nobody tried to speak to them. Akito looks up at the wall above the altar, and wonders if this religion had any truth to it, too.

They had been a god, once. They had been revered, feared, respected, obeyed. They had been worshipped, too. But being a god had been such a horribly lonely existence. Everything had been so dark, so crushing, so significant. The slightest act of defiance had sent them into a rage, and in their attempts to draw everyone closer, they had only succeeded in driving them away.

Akito lowers their dark gaze to the altar, and wonders if sacrifice had ever been necessary in this religion. They wonder if it would matter if they had sacrificed themself, bled out on a stone cold slab for their own glory.

With a new wardrobe in the works, Akito knew she'd have to do it eventually, but even with researching and browsing online beforehand, nothing could truly prepare her for the mix of emotions that would come with her first lingerie shopping experience.

Dialogues and Dreams (M)

Of all the things Akito expected after coming back from holiday, a visit from Saki and her off-colour remarks about her relationship weren't on that list. However it's those exact words that spark much more intimate ones later on.

Reclamation (E)

Akito thought she was long past being taken over by jealousy and possession. Unfortunately, it seems that old habits die hard.

You know… I don’t think anyone actually knows how to get more comments on their fics in today’s fandom landscape.

Let’s be real. Because the audience treats fandom like a content farm, the “tried and true” advice of the past simply does not work anymore and at this point I don’t know what does. I tried advertising. I tried making friends. I tried fanart. I tried reviewing others. I tried changing fandoms. I even tried being annoying.

Nothing is working and I’m honestly tired of seeing EMPTY inboxes.

I was genuinely excited to redux an old fic, but now I don’t think I’ll bother since it’s been made clear that my work is a waste of time.
