A bit more Autumn color courtesy of the Allegheny Highlands. I missed peak on the upper slopes of Canaan Valley by a week or so, but the American mountain ash (Sorbus americana) and large-leaved holly (Ilex montana), a.k.a. mountain winterberry, were still in splendid form, really vibrant and loaded up with berries. The photo below shows them growing side-by-side on the summit of Bald Knob. The mountains of Central Appalachia are home to half a dozen decidous holly species - each one of them is drop-dead gorgeous.
