Art of Dying || Kotone & ????
Where… Am I? The gurgling sound of a stream was the first thing he became conscious of. Second, he could connect the feeling of the grass he was set on, scratching against his bare skin. Sunlight shone through his eyelids, irritating them and causing him to reflexively rub them. A wave of relief passed through him. Somehow, knowing that outer stimuli existed gave him a feeling of solace; proof that his existence wasn’t merely inward. He slowly opened his eyes, squinting as they began to adjust to the light. After a bright whiteness, a world of odd hues began to form in front of him, as if a polaroid slowly revealing a photograph in a mish-mashed color theory. He could only see trees as he tried to look far into the nameless world surrounding him. Birds chirped overhead, and a squirrel passed through his line of sight before running back up a tree. Observing the wildlife kept him busy for a time, before he once again returned his focus to the questions that had been haunting him since the moment he’d awoken himself. Where am I? …Who am I? In an attempt to find answer, he began to search his mind. Every single time, all that came up was a blank. An abyss of emptiness held where his memories should be. It frightened him, knowing that he didn’t know, couldn’t recall anything. A sense of dread welled from the pit of his stomach as panic set in. I need to get out of here! I need to know! Who am I?! It was this sudden urge to stand up and hope to find the answers outside himself that allowed him to come to a sudden realization. He was half-buried underneath the earth near the stream. Worst of all, because of a quagmire forming from his movement, he was sinking into the earth. He reached out both his arms, clawing at the ground in front of him, as he atttempted to pull himself out with all his strength. This only made him sink deeper into the ground, the earth shifting harder into place. Help… I have to escape… I need to know… I don’t want to be alone… Slowly, the rush of adrenaline that had come from his panicked state began to lessen its effects, and he found himself more and more fatigued. Finally, he settled down once more, his face flat on the ground, a despaired resolve consuming him, accepting the dreaded end of his short existence, without any answer. That is, until he heard the soft rustling of grass in front of him. Looking up, he saw that someone else was here. Someone else. Another person… He wasn’t alone… He tried to lift himself up, looking at the other person with a renewed hope in his eyes.
"Name…" he was able to force out of his lips. "Do you have one?"
A cool breeze toyed with the brilliantly colored leaves, the sunlight danced against the thin layer casting lively shadows down upon the green earth. The grass bent below still upturned hands. Resting against a tree, ornate apparel complementing the whimsical scene, Kotone seemed posed for an unseen painter. Her lips parted in their soft curved frown and a crease formed between her brows. The movement of her chest became more apparent as time passed, the breeze sweeping low to swipe her bangs across her face. She drew in a breath.
Kotone wanted to wade in the comforting darkness, submerge herself in the unconscious. She wanted to sleep and keep dreaming. She wanted to fade. The breeze died and her hair fell back into place. Hands twitched, muscles remembering movement and life. Her eyes opened.
The deep red of the trees filled her sight, the waving branches greeting her cheerfully. She raised a hand to cover her eyes although the shade fell already onto her small frame. Kotone expelled a hissing sigh before dropping her hand and raising her head once more. The colors were unreal. They were too beautiful, too breath taking. They were not meant to be made and not meant to be witnessed. She lowered her head.
Pushing her self upwards, Kotone stood on two unsteady feet. Her legs shook beneath her, unable to remember its proper function, so Kotone rested while leaning against the tree she had awoken next to. Fitting a hand into her sleeve out of habit, she attempted to reach for a fan that was not there. Frown deepening, she pulled her hand out only to draw a fan-shaped layer of light. Blinking, she watched as the light took shape and faded into the shape of her familiar fan. Raising a brow, she began to nonchalantly fan herself as she began to walk.
There seemed to be a tugging in her mind ever since she had woken up. Her feet were carried by the impulsive navigation and Kotone could hardly refuse. Answers were what she sought. The world was no longer moving at her own pace, she could no longer outrun the present nor replay the past. Frown setting on her features, she walked briskly, pausing only to reassess her path.
A stream babbled next to her, its incessant chatter calming her. She paused to observe her surroundings. All around her, the dazzling trees continued endlessly. The stream, itself, seemed sharper than the others she had seen before. The world had to be a dream, an unusually vivid dream. Kotone began to walk again but was halted by the sound of a weakening struggle. Tilting her head, she began to make her way through the leaves.
She stopped, the fan stalled. A half naked man lay in the dirt, appearing to be sinking. She blinked. His words registered and she covered the lower half of her face with her fan but the chuckle was clear. "Wait a moment. You're half buried in the earth and you're concerned with the name of a stranger? Should you not be asking for me to pull you out first?"

The sun hasn’t risen when you carry yourself up the steps to this area’s. You carry yourself with a tired air; lessons the day before had cut into the late hours of the night and your prayers had to pushed back even further. Your limbs were sore, your back was sore, and your stomach was still a little upset by the small portion of food you had assumed. It was what most would call a shitty day, but you looked on the bright side. At least you could do what you loved for most of this seemingly long day, right? It was something that gave you a bit of hope for the day, and it gave you a burst of energy as you pushed yourself off of the last step. You release a sigh of contentment as you take in the sight of the shrine that you were always so fond of. You wished the gods a good morning in a quick prayer, telling them that you would do your best today. By the time that the rays of sunlight reach you, you are sweeping the ground once more. You take a brief moment to admire your work, but you resume your duties and prepare for any crowds that may come. Surprisingly, the day isn’t as busy as expected, and while this bothers you a bit, you are in no position to tell others how to live their lives. All you can do is connect them with the wonders that they can have if they choose a certain path. Without such a path, you cannot make an impact in their life, and them in yours. You would rather stay out of their hair, to be completely honest, and perhaps by letting them approach you, the interaction might be a bit better. There are always exceptions, though. You suppose that would depend on whoever approaches you and the shrine.
It’s midday when you take note of a person approaching the shrine. You watch them with a quiet, protective gaze, but you allow them to do as they need. Only if they do something to ruin the purity of the Gods’ shrine will you react. For the moment, as you can see, they do not plan to do much, but such things are always an option to others, right?
Kotone ascended the stone steps in silence. A distant gaze surveyed the surroundings, gaudily colored foliage bent overhead, shading her. Against the sun, the shadows cast onto the stone were bland and colorless. Narrowing her eyes, Kotone viewed the overly brilliant shades with mild disgust. These colors were made for dreams and not for reality, not for her state of forced consciousness that the gods had given her. The lush violets and blues were meant to be remembered fondly by the half-awoken mind in a state in which the colors fade with time. These were meant to be glimpsed and remembered in fleeting moments. Such vibrancy should be limited to dreams because the saturated beauty clashed with the inherent ugliness humanity held. Halting at the top of the steps, the pawn opened her fan in one fluid motion, seemingly having extracted it from one of her sleeves. She scrutinized the area. Aside from one other person, the shrine seemed to be empty. How sad. Having heard of the Gods and their so-called plan to protect their Checkers, she had assumed that their shrines would be heavily populated. Perhaps, even these Checkers were like most humans. Perhaps, they had taken their gods for granted and, like children, expect their parents to simply fix the problems they have. There was no way to be certain and Kotone cared little for the actual answer. Her duty was not affected by the nature of the Checkers and she did not care to get closer to the Gods. She was there to speculate and understand. Stepping closer to the shrine, her footsteps soft even in the quiet, Kotone gazed at its entirety. The story had been given to her but she was an outsider. There was a difference between hearing and experiencing. Glancing at the other person, a cold smile was painted across her features. Hers was a frigid beauty, a chilled grace. "Pardon me, would you care to enlighten me about the Gods?"

"A lover?" Kotone's lips were covered by her fan as an airy laugh left her. "One. I have had none but many have asked for my hand. A trophy, they called me.
