Should have done it. Should have done it. Should have don it. At least they believed me when I said I was just fooling around. Next time I’ll get myself together and do it as soon as I see the train.

He froze for a moment and could feel the disbelief flood into his mind. Rationally he knew this couldn’t be him but at the same time he also knew that torchwood didn’t care for rationality.
Plastering on a fake smile he pulled out a torch and shone it between them. “You’ve got a nice name there kid. My names Ianto as well and I work for a special part of the police.”
"So you can tell me how to get home? Mam doesn't like it when I'm out in the dark alone..."
He looked at the other Ianto, as he thought of the man now, hopefully. It was embarrassing to get lost, but now that he had help he'd be back home in no time.

ANON HOUR STARTS NOW. NOTHING DELETED. EVERYTHING ANSWERED

The bright light lit up half the hub, shouts of other team members filling the room. Jack’s eyes, however were only on Ianto. He could see him being pulled in and everything in him told him just to let go. Fall and grab him on the way down. Scrambling to let go his arm was stuck in the metal work. He cried out in pain and anguish, knowing there was now nothing he could do to stop this. “IANTO!” He tried to call to him, trying to reach for him but he was too far. By the time his arm was free the rift was receding. There was nothing he could do to stop it. He’d lost him, again.
With the last of his energy he tossed the explosive he’d been carrying up into the receding rift, watching it explode and seal the entrance behind Ianto. For the better of the city he let Ianto go. Settling against the metal, unable to bring himself to climb down he let tears fall from his eyes, now knowing he’d wasted his second chance.
At first he had no idea what had happened. He was lying on the hard ground, dizzy and confused. But within the blink of an eye, he remembered. He remembered everything. How he fell through the rift, met Jack, lived with him, lived a life that wasn't supposed to be like that. The hub. The rift causing problems. Himself letting go of that lever. The bright light. He remembered.
As soon as he stood up, he could feel something was wrong. He stumbled and lost balance for a moment, because he used to much strenght to get up. Because he was used to needing it, since he was quite tall and now... His train of thought stopped at once. It couldn't be. Ianto looked down at himself, noticing his unusual small and childish body. So he was his old self again, it seemed. Not only would he have to pretend nothing had happened now, he also had to forget Jack. He'd never be seeing him again after all. Not if his suspicions were true and he was back in his time. Not seeing anything he could do, he went home. At least where he thought home was, considering he hadn't been here in a long time and didn't even know if he was in his right time or even the right place.
On his way, he swore to himself he'd find Jack. As soon as he could, he'd leave here and search for him. He just had to find him.
While Ianto was holding the lever steady Jack was climbing higher and higher up the machine. He was going to have to get the aim right to close this tear, or risk losing half of the city. Glancing down as he climbed something got his attention, a worried from forming on his features.
"Ianto!" He called, gesturing to a switch above the younger man’s head. "You have to hit that green switch! Keep the lever down too!" Jack hand’t yet realized that stretching that far stood such a good chance of weakening Ianto’s grip too much.
Ianto looked at the switch Jack pointed at. It seemed a bit far, but he could do it. He was sure of it. He couldn't disappoint Jack now. Looking determined, Ianto tightened his grip on the lever, focused on keeping the lever down and did his best to ignore his already aching muscles. He couldn't get weak now. Not not.
The young man took a deep breath and streched out his arm, but he couldn't reach the switch. He shifted a bit, so he could get closer to it. But with the change of position his stance wasn't as safe as before. For a second it won't make a difference, he told himself. Just for a second he concentrated on streching. A few millimetres away of reaching the switch, his arm felt like it was going to fall off. Just for a moment he relaxed it. Just for a moment he didn't hold it down. Before he realized what had happened, he felt a weird sensation. He remembered it, he had felt it once before, along with the brightness and confusion that came along with it.

Ianto nodded a little and chance stepping closer. “You’re in Cardiff. What’s your name? Where are you from?” He still wasn’t sure that this was really a kid yet and so he had to be careful. If this were a kid he needed to know more about how her got to this particular spot, especially if he cam from inside the rift. There were many options but most of them were bad.
"I need to know your name so that I can help you." He persisted, "I promise not to harm you."
"I'm from Cardiff. But not from anywhere here." He looked around and didn't recognize anything. "My name's Ianto Jones. Are you from the police?"
Policemen he could trust, and usually people from the police did ask a whole lot of questions. So maybe that man could actually help him. At least he hoped so. Ianto didn't like this whole situation at all.

Jack paused to think of a task Ianto could do, sighing as the only obvious one came up. “Go down there and hold that lever down. Do NOT let it pop up. If it does half the hub’s getting sucked up.”
"I think I can manage that," Ianto rolled his eyes at the captain. Holding a lever down? Child's play. As if he could fuck that up. He went to the lever and did as he was told, looking bored as he did so. When he said he wanted to help, he didn't mean something like that. He wanted to do something important, not something everyone could do easily. But with time he noticed the lever to be going up, the task of keeping it down suddenly hard. Within a few seconds, he had to put quite a bit of strenght in keeping it in place.

Ianto sighed as he watched the last of the team leave to go home. He could vaguely remember Jack calling out that he was leaving and if he’d be alright on his own. Naturally he’d told the other that he’s be just fine and he’d call if anything major happened.
That was how he ended up driving his car around the city to some random apartment buildings and climbing to the roof. According to the monitors this was where the rift activated. Looking around, he made out a shape in the dark. “Who are you? Are you alright?” He asked cautiously.

When he heard someone, Ianto turned to the voice. Ianto was frightened, and he didn't like strangers, so he hesitated before he replied. Maybe the stranger was the only way he could get back home, and maybe he knew what had happened to him.
"I don't know where I am. I was on my way home a second ago," he replied, refusing to give him a name. He wasn't stupid. "My head hurts. I just want to go back."
