Jayden was immediately interested in her words. “I have a moment. Please, call me Jayden. Mr. Torres is way too formal. It makes me feel too old.” He grinned and motioned for her to join him. 

“Thank you, Mr.--Jayden.” She corrected herself, she held the folder a little tighter than she should have. She knew she shouldn’t be digging so deeply into something she herself is tied to, but what could she do? This all seemed to fit together all too well. “You’re pretty new to town so you probably don’t know what happened last year. I didn’t either until I started working here and well--I think it might all tie together. The events I mean.” She looked down to the file and back to him. “This is everything I’ve gathered on it, I know it’s not my job to look into this stuff that’s why you have Ms. Bradbury and others, but I did and it’s all here.”

“Mr. Torres? Do you have a moment? I think I found something to help with that article you’re working on. I can always bring it by later if you are.”

“Don’t tell anyone, but I’m riding high as thee night sky right now—” He found himself chuckling, his cross-faded adventure slowly dwindling with his unusally high tolerance, though he tried to remedy it with another drink, hoping to at least balance himself out as he continued to smile and chuckle to himself. “You ever get high and drunk at the same time? It’s….incredible.”

“Don’t worry, you’re secret is safe with me.” she laughed along with the young man, if only for how absurd it was. It felt like centuries ago she was doing the same thing, but it was maybe two or three years ago.“Oh yeah, back in my home town my friends and I would get totally illegally camp out in the woods outside of town and get faded almost every weekend. It was the greatest.” She smiled at the thought. “You’ve got some balls getting faded at a community event. I like you already.”

“You came?” Beck hadn’t seen much of the other, but tried to stay in contact. She was a good friend after all, and Beck didn’t want to lose that no matter what happened, even if he was thinking of leaving or not. Charlotte had easily become a great reason to stay in town, and with her at the celebration, Beck couldn’t help but grin to himself as he figured she was enjoying herself. “Surely this isn’t just for an editorial for the paper, right? You’re actually here to have a good time, right?”

Charlotte couldn’t help the guilt she felt. She left to seek help, but left everyone in the dark.  The last thing she wanted to do was lose Beck. She tried her best to keep in touch, but after what she did she felt she needed to make up for all that time. “Of course,” she beamed as she spoke, her smile stretching ear to ear. “I wouldn’t miss it. And I think we’d both agree I need to get out more.”She was getting used to the idea of making roots, but even as ready as she felt to settle in something held her back. The town was under fire and if things got bad--could she hold on or would she run?  Either way, she wasn’t going to leave him behind. “Oh no, they got someone else covering this tonight’s event. I’m here to have some fun. And I hope you are too. They don’t have you sneaking pictures do they?  You are our best photographer, but its not a party without you letting loose.”

“Of course I am.” He chuckled, pulling her out to where the dance floor surely should be. “Be prepared, I definitely have some moves.” Olly stated, finding a beat to the music as he moved his hips and arms.

“I just hope you can keep up with me,” she teased as she followed him into the dance floor. She let the music take hold, letting her hips swing and her hands glide through her hair as she stayed close to her partner. She had never did this kind of thing; she could only hope she was doing this right and didn’t look like a complete moron.

“Couldn’t help but notice that you don’t have anything in your glass. And while I might not be a waiter, what sort of gentleman would I be if not to offer to take you to get another drink?”

Charlotte looked up, a sheepish smile crossing her lips as she considers the offer. “I would love another one, thank you.” she spoke kindly as she turned to face him. “And I would love the company too if someone isn’t waiting for you I mean. “

Kayden smiled, considering it for a moment before he nodded. “Alright, I’ll dance with you. I might step on your toes though.” He paused just for a moment, just short enough that his net words could be connected to what he’d already said, “Noah Fence.” He held out his hand.

“I think my toes can handle it,” she assured him with a light laugh. She wasn’t sure what to make of this guy, but he was definitely a character for sure. Anyone could spot that fake name from miles away, but she wasn’t one to judge. Her last name was far from her own. “Charlotte Burke,” she met him with a strong hand shake before pulling him closer. “I’ll do my best to not step on yours too. So shall we?”

“I’m not much of a dancer, but you should go for it,” Kayden said, smiling at the stranger. “From what I hear it wouldn’t be the strangest thing to happen in this town.” 

“And you joining me wouldn’t be the strangest either. I can’t dance either, but it’s better than just standing here.” She poked back with a playful grin. She didn’t know him, but then again she didn’t get out that much. “Come on, what do you say?”

“You’re serious? Alright, fuck it--let’s go” She felt the smile growing on her lips.What did she have to loose? She was here to have a new life, but she’d done everything but live. Or so her therapist seemed to remind her. She grabbed his hand with a sly grin. “Show me what you’ve got.”

“I know this isn’t one of those events, but do you think they’d mind if people danced? I would if I had a partner.”

With a bit of a pep talk to himself as he came down the path, before standing at her doorway, it wasn’t long until he found his knuckles slowly knocking at the entrance, hoping to greet his friend with a cheery smile. With a slight scent of cookies hitting him, there was nothing but a clever smirk to his expression as he brought hit hands behind his back and together while swaying back and forth on his heels. Perhaps there were nerves to the evening, feeling a bit of it mostly for the timeliness of it all. He had always been more of a spontaneous guy, so the planned evening was different than his normal, but random routine. Waiting for the door to open, he took one last deep breath as he prepared himself.

Lolly quickly slipped out of her apron and placed it back on its hook before she hurried to the door when the knock echoed through her apartment. She knew it would be fine, whatever played out--it would be fine or so she told herself. She had every reason to be nervous, but she couldn’t let that stop her from seeing him again, taking a chance on catching up with him. And if it went south at least she had cookies, right? They left on good terms, even flirtatious once, but she didn’t want to over step especially with her being so unsure about what time had changed. Lolly stopped at the door, taking a deep breath and smoothing the skirt. she was wearing before moving to unlock the door. She opened it slowly, a bright smile  was drawn from her lips as he came into view. “Hey,”  she beamed as she took him in “I’m so glad you could come by,” she stepped forward to hug him, hoping that was okay. She knew she was overthinking it all, but she couldn’t afford to mess this up.

It had to be the scariest thing she’d done other than she decided to go get help. She felt stable, not better, but a place where she could grow. Healthier, happier, and back to where she wanted to start when she first moved. But now, she had to face her first real friend and hopefully mend whatever remained of that. Making dinner for him seemed like the best bet, even going as far to make cookies. She’d just pulled them out of the oven when she heard someone coming up the steps. She couldn’t help feeling nervous, she knew this was for the best but chance of rejection ,even of a friendship, never got easier.

Lolly looked over her shoulder, panicked eyes searching for the car that seemed to be following her for the last two blocks as she hurried front of Beck’s place, hastily, she rang the door bell in hopes he would be home. She had no reason to be scared, she tried to tell herself, but the longer she stood out in the open the more she feared. She rang it again, looking back again just to be sure.

“Oh, well…I can’t really turn down a hot chocolate. As long as if you’re not going to drink it. I wouldn’t want to take if from you if you wanted to enjoy both.”

“Oh no, one is perfect for me.” She assured the young girl as she handed it over. “Besides, nothing makes a day better than some hot coco and I think we could all use some brightness around here.”

“Oh, that’s very nice of you,” Sebastian said, smiling brightly towards the other. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, I think the barista thought I could use more friends and gave me some help.” She joked she handed it to the young man with a kind smile. “Besides, hot chocolate can make anyone’s day better.”

“Hey, um--they messed up my order and gave me an extra hot chocolate. Do you want it? Its got extra whipped cream.”

Beck had certainly enjoyed the evening, happy to be with Charlotte for a majority of the evening. It was gentle and caring, and he was able to talk to her outside of their usual comfort zone of the office. He grinned back at her easily, letting a soft shrug leave him. “Well, you make it pretty easy to be around.” Beck looked to her, a soft pink filling his cheeks, before ducking away. “Well, you’ve been nothing but great with me. I promise.” His voice was soft as he nodded along before he heard what was going on. Turning to face the stage and staring in horror, Beck glanced back to Lolly in confusion. “Yeah, I…I think that might be a good idea.” he nodded swiftly, holding her hand and pulling her towards the exit. “There’s a great little diner nearby if you’re in the mood to eat. The finger foods just didn’t quite fill me up.”

She always played the part, being whatever the people the system placed her with needed her to be. Whatever she needed to be to have a few friends in hopes they’d say, and even when she was taken--she played a part just to survive. Now, the masks were gone and while her walls reached beyond the clouds, she wasn’t going to be anything she wasn’t. She eased into everything, but she couldn’t help wanting to rush with him. Dive head first into being his friend and let him in--he seemed to be the only one looking past her being the weird quiet girl at the paper. She felt like she mattered and  the confidence that brought came easy when he was around. “Like I said, you make it easy.” She couldn’t help the smile. She felt truly happy, maybe this was what a normal life was supposed to feel like. Lolly nodded, letting him drag her away from the horror show that commenced on stage. “We should go there, I’m starving.” in truth she hadn’t really eaten since that morning and wasn’t sure she could trust the food decisions of the hosts. “I wasn’t really feeling the party anyway.”
