Dawn winces more than once as the stranger wraps her injury. Not for the first time, she wished she was back home, where she knew she could be safe and not have to rely on the help of some stranger off the street. but then again, if she was home, she wouldn’t have gotten in this situation in the first place. Dawn knew this whole thing was a mess. And because of this mess, she was probably going to end up with a hefty scar. Even though she knew it was better than dying, she could still feel hot tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. She was glad when Angel told her she could lie down, and does so quickly and silently.
“…Thanks.” Dawn’s head was spinning a bit, but it felt a little better now that she was lying down. The wound in her side was throbbing painfully, and it wasn’t easy to ignore. But at least the stone around her neck had fallen silent, and sat placidly on her neck. Swallowing down the lump forming in her throat, Dawn turns to Angel once more. “Do you know if there’s like… anywhere to stay around here?”
Angel reaches into her quiver again and pulls out a water bottle and a couple granola bars. “Don’t worry about it.” She answered passively, handing the food to the stranger. “And no, I’m not really from around here. I think there’s probably a hotel room or an inn somewhere in town, but I’ve never stayed at either of them.”
She glanced down at the girl on the ground, leaning up against a tree. “I’ll get you there eventually, right now you need to take it easy. It hasn’t even come close to scabbing over, if you move around too much, you’ll bleed to death. So don’t do that.” The alv’s lips twitched up into a small smile, trying to lighten the mood a bit.
“I get the feeling that we’re going to be spending the next few hours together, at least. Do you have a name or something I can call you?”
Dawn takes the water and the granola bars from the stranger, not questioning where they came from. At the moment, asking where the other girl was carrying all this stuff seemed inconsequential. Instead of taking a drink or eating the food, Dawn lays her head against the ground, groaning softly. This was quite the mess she’d gotten herself into. But even though it was all a mess, at least she was still alive. That was the one good thing about this situation.
After a few moments, Dawn opens her eyes and looks over at the other girl. She knew she should probably use a fake name. She didn’t want people to know who she was, and in her current state, it wouldn’t be hard for Angel to notify someone about her. And even if Angel didn’t recognize her name, there was always a chance she could let it slip, and someone else could figure it out. No, if they were really going to be spending the next few hours together like Angel said, then it would be smarter to give a fake name.
With a sigh, Dawn tries to smile, but the expression doesn’t quite reach her eyes. She was still surprised that her stone was being so quiet, the cold pendant resting against her neck. But it was better than having it screaming at her.
“Yeah... You can call me Jane.” Jane. Perfect. Plain Jane, Jane Doe, unknown and undefined. The perfect name for a girl who wanted to stay under the radar.
