I keep thinking about a human Rocky au where, instead of Rocky waking up alone on the Hail Mary, Yao and Dubois actually wake up with him. At first, everything is going according to plan until it becomes very clear Yao and Dubois are not doing well. Rocky does everything in his power figure out whats wrong and treat them but they deteriorate too quickly. By the time the ship reaches Tau Ceti, they’re already gone. Rocky, overwhelmed by grief and survivor’s guilt, spends about a month spiralling and crashing out. Until he looks out the petrovascope and notices a giant alien ship that’s been fearfully avoiding him this whole time

I got a ping about my species/planet swap AU and kinda felt bad I never actually did put too much effort into to Eridian!Grace. So… take two with another tunnel scene!

Rambles about the designs below.

Grace just isn’t Grace without glasses (movie-verse, at least), so I wanted to give him something. The monocle-like thing just helps a bit with echolocation. And, no, he’s probably not wearing it right.

As for human!Rocky… I’m a sucker for Rocktiz, so couldn’t help tweak the design just a bit: Gave him some screen-reading glasses and the ruler tattoo.

Species swap Rocky and Grace where Eridian!Grace doesn't really get Rocky's nickname

Rocky: It's like, a rock, but just worded cutely. Grace: How do you word a word "cutely," question? Rocky: Hmmm, well, it's supposed to be endearing. Kinda used to describe small things. Like something you'd call kid. I mean, uh, an Eridian child. Grace: Ah, understand. Name would be 🎶

When they get to Erid/A convo later down the line

Rocky: Aww, pebbles are so cute Grace. You didn't tell me they'd be so cute. Grace: New word, statement. Rocky: Oh, it's just the human word for a small rock. They're small, like a pebble and so, pebbles. Grace: Understood. Word for Eridian child is 🎶 sometimes called "Rocky." Rocky: ...Grace that's what you use for my name. Grace: Correct... Is Rocky okay, question? You are making face. Rocky: You've been calling me a child in Eridian this entire time?!? Grace: That is how Rocky describe name. Rocky also remind Grace of students... Grace ask again. Is Rocky okay, question?

They make Rocky's name more unique shortly after, but it still noticeably similar to the Eridian word for pebble. If they do stay on Erid, Rocky becomes a sort of teacher assistant to Grace and their students will never let the poor leaky human live that fact down
